The Netflix series "Adolescence" has sparked quite an interest among many people, making it into one of those "conversations we need to have". The general vibe is Liberals revere the series as a powerful criticism of kids' exposure to social media and other online content that can lead to unhealthy and even dangerous behavior. In this series, the specific content in question pertains to "Red Pill" movements, the "Manosphere", and other forms of toxic masculinity that can have a harsh impact on young boys, if left unchecked.
Conservatives on the other hand downplay the series as propaganda that paints a false narrative. They criticize that the series is treated as a documentary and not a work of fiction. To call it fiction is to downplay or dismiss themes of which the series tries to warn us.
What are your thoughts on "Toxic Masculinity"? What are examples of masculinity that are not toxic? What social movements or influences come to mind that root themselves in being masculine? Which of them are healthy vs toxic?
Rule of etiquette: The goal is to have a productive free-flowing discussion, while also giving everyone a fair chance to participate accordingly. If you have any trouble getting a word in, please use the "Raise Hand" feature. When a hand is raised I will set a 3:00 timer for turns. When no hands are up we continue with a free flow dialog with no timer. No one is obligated to speak if they do not want. Respect for others is a must (or at least please try haha). We're all human.
Hope you can join us!
