Is the Universe Fine-Tuned?
Fine-Tune Definition: to make very small changes to something in order to make it work as well as possible
To suggest a fine-tuned universe implies a divine Creator who intended for the universe to be in its current state, which becomes an argument for the existence of God.
The Fine-Tuning Argument is an interesting approach in apologetics as it is purely relying on science, math, probability, and intellectual framing. There is no place for morality, love, “problem of evil” or any emotions in this subject. It is difficult to put ourselves in this mindset as most if not all of us have some emotional connection to religion, be it love for or hatred against it. Can we really disconnect our emotions from this matter and evaluate the probably of God’s existence from a purely scientific/mathematical approach?
How was the Fine-Tuning argument first derived? Was it scientists that made a series of discoveries that held them to a path of suggesting a Fine-Tuner? Or is it religious zealots who are trying to interpret everything they see around them as evidence for their God?
Is there any evidence that supports or debunks the idea of a fine-tuned universe? Or is it an unprovable idea not even worth exploring?
Could a Fine-Tuned universe point us to anything other than God? Perhaps fine-tuning supports the Simulation Hypothesis? Can the Simulation Hypothesis exist in a Godless universe?
I believe the universe is fine-tuned and I will share why with this Poker analogy:
If I play Poker with you and on the first hand I get a Royal Flush, you might already think I’m cheating, or you may give me the benefit of the doubt and I just got lucky (0.000154% chance). Now we play a second hand and I get ANOTHER Royal Flush; second time in a row. Now you will surely think I have rigged the deck in my favor (or ‘fine-tuned’ it). Now let’s say we play 5 hands in a row, and I get a royal flush every time. At this point why are you even playing me, you know I have rigged the deck by now. Or if you still think I have not rigged the deck, the odds of getting 5 Royal Flushes in a row are 1 in 1.16 x 10^29 (1 followed by 29 Zeroes). These are the odds if I did not rig the deck, or if I did rig the deck then the odds would actually be 100% because I made it so. Which of these conclusions would you lean towards?
Now let’s compare this to the universe. Conservative estimates say the odds of the universe creating advanced life as we know it are 1 in 10^229 (1 followed by 229 Zeroes). Just for fun let’s display the full numbers:
5 Royal Flushes in a row by chance:
0.00000000000000000086206896551 %
Universe creating advanced life by chance:
0.000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001 %
Are we going to look at these numbers and say the 5 Royal Flushes were not really by chance but rigged, but the Universe was not rigged but only created life by chance?
