Coffee & Philosophy: When Is War Justified?

This is a casual discussion group for people of all backgrounds and opinions.

When is war Justified?
Is it ever right for a country to start a war? What wars has your country been involved with that they should not have been involved? Under what circumstances should you be willing to die for your country? Under what circumstances should you be willing to Kill for your country?
Preemptive Wars – Should our country take preemptive action against another country in fear that they may soon strike us first, or perhaps develop a nuclear weapon? What if their attack is 100% certain? Does the level of certainty determine whether or not preemptive war is justified?
Tyranny/Oppression Abroad – If we learn that a tyrannical government is starving, persecuting or oppressing innocent people within their country, are we to sit idly by and let it continue? Do we have a moral duty to help our fellow humans in need, even if they have no impact on our own country?
Resources – Is it ever necessary to invade another country for the sake of mining their natural resources for our own benefit? What if our resources are depleted and we truly need to do this for our country’s survival? How about a combination of factors, such as we truly need resources for our survival, and there is a resource rich country being run by a criminal dictatorship oppressing their own people?
