Nuclear power plant tour
Details
Join us for a rare educational outing to Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Power Plant. It was a lot of leg work to set this up so I am so excited to finally be able to post it. This will be a unique chance to learn more about nuclear energy, commercial power generation, and the role this facility plays in Alabama’s energy landscape.
This tour will not go inside the actual reactor. Most of the visit will take place in the auditorium, with time to review brochures, pamphlets, and educational materials, plus possible small merchandise items. If our group stays at 13 people or fewer, we will get a van tour of different sections of the plant grounds.
Attire:
Please plan to wear jeans and bring a light jacket, since it may be chilly inside the auditorium. Pro-nuclear attire is welcome. Photos are restricted in most areas, but there will be designated opportunities for photos.
After the tour, anyone interested can grab food nearby at Broadway Cafe or David’s Pizza in the town of Ashford.
PLEASE READ BEFORE RSVPING:
Because this tour requires advance coordination and a final headcount with the facility in advance, please RSVP only if you genuinely plan to attend. If your plans change, please update your RSVP as soon as possible so another member has the opportunity to attend. We will allow a 15-minute grace period at the start of the tour. No-call/no-shows for this event may result in removal from future limited-capacity events or temporary suspension from the group.
We understand emergencies happen — communication is the key.
FAQ:
- Is this safe?— Yes, nuclear power plants monitor levels very closely, you’d get more radiation eating a banana or taking a cross-country flight
