Explore the Sauganash Neighborhood
Details
Let's explore the Sauganash neighborhood, on the northwest side, on Friday November 6th.
Itinerary:
We will meet at Irene Hernandez Picnic Grove. Then we will walk north from there on the Valley Line Trail about a mile and a half to Sauganash Park. We will get off the trail here and walk a couple of miles around historic Sauganash. We will end at Sauganash Grill (intersection of Peterson and Sauganash Avenue) for a bite to eat and drink. From there you can catch Peterson Bus home.
What you’ll see:
The architectural styles of the homes in Sauganash are very diverse and include Colonial, French, Tudor Revival along with Art Deco and Art Moderne. The neighborhood is pretty, well-maintained, and feels suburban even though its still within the city limits.
A Bit of History:
The name “Sauganash” comes from Billy Caldwell, Potawatomi son of a Mohawk mother and British officer father. Billy was given the name “Chief Sauganash,” which means Englishman, because he took a lead role in mediating treaties between the Native Americans and the United States.
