Thinking Systemically about Systemic Design

Details

TALK:
These days, everyone is excited about 'systemic design', a broad term which captures attempts to integrate systems-thinking and human-centred design, with the intention of helping designers cope with complex design projects.

But what does it really mean to do systemic design, particularly in organisations and contexts that are not built to support systems thinking?

How might designers turn their own tools back on themselves to create the conditions that enable systemic design to flourish?

In this talk, Luke will reflect on his own experience grappling with these questions, to show that transforming people and organisations to be more systemic is slow, quiet and humble work. But, done well, patience can pay dividends.

SPEAKER PROFILE:
Luke Craven is Canberra-based designer, systems consultant, and researcher.

He has spent over a decade thinking about:

  • how we make sense of complexity in the world around us
  • how we turn confusion into action
  • how we can overcome hubris to achieve meaningful systems change.

Luke is known for developing the 'System Effects' methodology: https://systemeffects.com/#/ which is widely used to analyse complex causal relationships in participatory and qualitative data.

He also writes a weekly newsletter: https://pigontracks.substack.com/
about systems, complexity and how things can be done differently.
