The cure for fake news: Talk to people!
We live in a country that is increasingly divided into different philosophical camps, and this division is fueled by people associating with like-minded people and reading the news they want to read. While having common ideals may make for a better friendship, lack of exposure to different ideas leaves us with a skewed and false impression of the world around us and undermines our ability to make intelligent decisions.
San Diego has a rich blend of people from all over the world, and from different walks of life. We have intellectuals from our many universities, military personnel from our bases, and a large immigrant population bringing ideas from around the world. We have large construction, hospitality, engineering and biotech industries, all with different viewpoints of how the world works. What better way to understand the different worlds in which these people live than by sitting down and talking to them over a cup of coffee or a beer?
What is Thought Lounge?
A Thought Lounge Session (TL Session) is an in-person, formatted dialogue. The sessions work best with 3-6 people, but will still be held as long as one other person signs up.
Each person leads a 12-minute dialogue on a topic of utmost interest and/or urgency to them. Coming into the TL Session, participants are unaware of the topics their fellow participants will be bringing to the table.
There is one Host that organizes and moderates the discussion, specifically (and most importantly) by upholding the TL 5 Agreements of Dialogue.
After all the topics have been presented, the Host writes everyone’s topics on a whiteboard or piece of paper and participants take an additional 12 minutes to draw connections between them.
