World Usability Day 2022 in Newcastle
We’re bringing the North East user centred design (UCD) community together, in-person, to celebrate World Usability Day 2022. Join us on Thursday 10th November for an evening of talks and activities exploring this year’s theme of “Our Health”. Come one, come all, whether you identify as a researcher, designer, analyst, manager, scientist, engineer or anything else!

It’s an opportunity to meet a few new faces, maybe for the first time in-real-life, or reconnect with people you haven’t seen in awhile. And get some FREE food and drinks sponsored by Sopra Steria Limited.

This event will be in-person only and won’t be recorded. We’re not opening up to hybrid this time as we want to focus on connecting as a community.

Talks
We’re excited to bring you a line-up of speakers exploring the intersection of user centred design and health.

1. The many faces of users within the criminal justice system - considerations for a user centred design (USD) approach
By Helen Fisher, Service Designer and Researcher @ Sopra Steria
and David Colas Aberg, User Researcher @ Sopra Steria

The criminal justice system is ever evolving, and continuously growing in its focus and range of individuals within it. With an introduction to new types of technologies for the purpose of prevention, assessments, and management comes a need to better understand criminal justice users and what they require. One of the aspects of criminal justice is the health of staff and individuals with lived experiences. This talk will discuss how a user centred design (USD) approach can support those within the system. We will discuss the different types of users and different types of health records. The talk will also discuss how to understand the use of technologies by staff within the criminal justice system and how it may affect their daily work routine.

2. User centred research for digital health
By Kyle Montague, Associate professor in computing @ Northumbria University

Northumbria University has one of the largest groupings of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) researchers in the UK, bringing together a collective of experts in interaction design, usability and user experience (UX), social media and social computing, and user centred approaches to trust, privacy and security. A core strand of research in this area at the university is the development of novel approaches to user-centred digital health interventions. In this presentation we will give an overview of some of the most relevant, recent and exciting work in this area that is relevant to the 2022 theme of ‘Our Health’. This will span a range of applied areas including topics in mental health and wellbeing, healthy homes, and lifelong everyday health.

3. The future of health and wellness - apps, wearables and electronic health records
By Jill Irving, Experience Designer @ Thoughtworks
