The Ritual Dance of the Căluș
Ancient healing rites still alive in Romania today

The Căluș is one of Europe’s oldest surviving ritual traditions: a mysterious healing dance performed in parts of Romania during the nine days following Pentecost.
The dance is carried out by groups of young men — traditionally in sacred odd-numbered groups such as 7, 9, or 11 — who become “sworn brothers” through a secret vow taken before sunrise. Led by an elder, the group performs ritual dances believed to protect and heal those affected by powerful Pentecost spirits.
Thought to preserve elements of ancient pre-Christian rites of purification and fertility, the Căluș is closely linked with the symbolism of the horse, long associated with solar power, vitality, and transformation.
In this talk and exploration, we will look at the history, symbolism, music, and deeper meaning of this remarkable living tradition, and what it may reveal about rhythm, ritual, healing, and collective consciousness.
