How do you appraise your staff and deal with poor performance?

In November, we'll explore performance management - an important and potentially tricky area of managing your people positively.

Here are some questions to ponder in advance:

• Do you have a staff appraisal process? What is it for? Why did you adopt it? Does it work?

• How often do you carry out appraisals? Do you appraise all your staff at the same time of year?

• What happens at the appraisal? Do you enjoy doing them, and if not, why? Do people enjoy being appraised, and if not, why?

• How do you handle those staff who just won’t or can’t perform?

• What ways have you used to ‘manage people out’? How have these worked out?
