Tight-Loose-Tight - an evolution of OKR

Details

OKR has been widely adopted by tech companies and is attracting attention from many industries today.

So, what is OKR? Objectives and Key Results (OKR) is a simple but powerful methodology for setting and tracking goals.

Developed in the early days of Google by John Doerr and Andy Grove, it has been described as the "secret weapon" that led to Google's explosive growth.

Objectives are what needs to be done or achieved. They are high-level statements of intent that frame our ambitions without explaining how they will be achieved. Key Results are the measurable and impactful contributions made towards each Objective – they should answer the who, what and how of each goal. In this way, an Objective with a key result is like a recipe – you can't bake a cake without eggs and sugar!

In the words of Andy Grove:

  1. Where do I want to go? (The answer provides the Objective)
  2. How will I pace myself to see if I'm getting there? (The answer gives us milestones or Key results)

With many decades of experience, we see that not all adoptions of OKR have been successful. In this meetup, we will show how Tight-Loose-Tight can be viewed as an evolution of OKR with the potential to mitigate most of the challenges associated with unsuccessful adoptions of OKR.

Agenda:

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (20 minutes): We do an exercise in breakouts using Miro about our experience with OKR. How is OKR when it is working at its best? What stops that? Mike Burrows from Agendashift will facilitate this part.

𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (30 minutes): Kumar and Kjell Tore will paint a picture of the state of OKR, how some challenges with OKR can be solved, and end with how TLT in many cases may be a better alternative than OKR.

𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 (20 minutes): In breakouts, we discuss and document what we perceive as the differences between OKR and TLT.

𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 (20 minutes): We reflect in breakouts on what we could do to adopt TLT to improve OKR where we work and post it on the Miro board. We meet afterwards and share what we found inspiring and how we plan to use our new knowledge.
