Welcome to the first official tinyML UK meetup group.

We will be building on the success of the tinyML meetup groups in the US and around the world, offering the opportunity for members of the machine learning and embedded software communities somewhere to share ideas and network.

• What is the purpose of the group?
To spread the word and educate the industry on "tinyML" (broadly defined as machine learning architectures, devices, techniques, tools and approaches capable of performing on-device analytics for a variety of sensing modalities--vision, audio, motion, environmental, human health monitoring etc.) at “mW” or below power range targeting predominately battery operated devices. The tinyML meetup group is an informal monthly gathering of researchers and practitioners working on various aspects of machine learning technologies (hardware-algorithms/networks- software-application) at the extreme low-power regime to share latest developments in this fast growing field and promote collaborations throughout the ecosystem. The format will be presentations with Q&A followed by networking.

• Who should join?
Experts in machine learning technologies at the edge, especially in the low power battery operated regime. This includes hardware architects, software engineers, systems engineers, ASIC designers, algorithms and application developers, low power sensor providers and end users. “Newbees”, i.e. people interested in joining this field and getting up to speed by listening start-of-the-art presentations and interacting with established players are very welcome to join too, both from the industry and the academia.

• What will you do at your events?
Communicate to the attendees the “latest and greatest” in tinyML by watching a presentation from a tinyML expert from the industry or the academia and interfacing with the member of the tinyML Community.

In addition to popular tinyML Talks (which are deeply technical in nature), we are excited to start a new webcast series, tinyML Trailblazers, uncovering Success Stories in the tinyML World.
As tinyML continues its strong growth, there are more and more inspirational stories to be shared with the Community by its “movers & shakers”. These monthly LIVE and INTERACTIVE tinyML events will bring tinyML Masterminds, those who pioneer the field and make a significant impact, in an informal conversation/interview hosted by Dr. Chris Rowen, a renown Silicon Valley technologist and entrepreneur, and a tinyML innovator. They will share their stories of developing game changing tinyML technologies and innovations, applications, products and companies, as well as setting new research directions and revealing future vision.

This month's guest is Anders Hardebring. Anders is CEO and co-founder at Imagimob. Anders has strong experience in leading and developing early-stage companies in the technology sector. Anders was a driving force from start to exit in AU-System Mobile/Across Wireless that was sold to Sonera Smarttrust in a Billion-dollar exit. Anders holds a MSc in Industrial Engineering and Management from Linköpings University.

"Unleashing the Power of the New XIAO ESP32S3 Sense: Tackling Anomaly Detection, Image Classification, and Keyword Spotting with TinyML"

As machine learning continues to evolve and integrate with embedded systems, TinyML emerges at the intersection, offering the potential to run machine learning models on low-power microcontrollers. This talk will delve into the fascinating world of Tiny Machine Learning (TinyML) using the a Thumb-Size ESP32 CAM Dev Board: Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32S3 Sense. We will explore three significant projects demonstrating the wide range of possibilities with TinyML. Our journey begins with an Anomaly Detection and Motion Classification project. Here, we will use an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensor to identify unusual patterns and classify various types of motion. We will discuss collecting and preprocessing sensor data, training a machine-learning model, and deploying it onto the ESP32S3 for real-time inference. Next, we will explore Image Classification, showing how the XIAO ESP32S3 Sense, with its built-in camera, can identify and classify objects. We will discuss the challenges of working with image data, including handling high dimensionality and data variability, and demonstrate how we overcame these challenges to build a robust classifier. Finally, we will conclude the talk with a project on Keyword Spotting. Using the built-in microphone of the XIAO ESP32S3 Sense, we will demonstrate how to train a model to recognize specific spoken keywords. This portion of the talk introduces sound classification, a compelling field with many applications, from voice assistants to environmental sound classification. Throughout the talk, we will use the Arduino IDE and Edge Impulse Studio to create and deploy the TinyML models. Attendees will gain insights into data collection, pre-processing, model design, and impulse design.

Marcelo Rovai is born in São Paulo and held a Master’s in Data Science from the Universidad del Desarrollo (UDD) in Chile and an MBA from IBMEC (INSPER) in Brazil. He graduated in 1982 as an Engineer from UNIFEI, Federal University of Itajubá, with a specialization from Escola Politécnica de Engenharia of São Paulo University (USP), both institutions located in Brazil. Rovai has experience as a teacher, engineer, and executive in several technology companies such as CDT/ETEP, AVIBRAS Aeroespacial, SID Informática, ATT-GIS, NCR, DELL, COMPAQ (HP), and more recently at IGT as a VP and a Senior Advisor for Latin America. Marcelo Rovai publishes articles about electronics on websites such as MJRoBot.org, Hackster.io, Instructables.com, and Medium.com. Furthermore, he is a volunteer Professor at the UNIFEI in Brazil and a lecturer at several Congresses and Universities on IoT and TinyML. He is an active member and a Co-Chair of the TinyML4D group, an initiative to bring TinyML education to developing countries.

"Standardized AI Architectures for Secure TinyML"

Recently, ML tasks that have been traditionally associated with high-performance CPUs and GPUs, have started to be performed also on highly constrained devices at the far edge. This shift towards the devices, often named TinyML, has many well recognized advantages such as lower bandwidth requirements and energy consumption, cheaper prices, increased privacy, and scalability. However, it also poses serious challenges: first of all, it requires to handle even complex ML tasks with Microcontollers (MCUs) equipped with small memories, low-performance processors, and limited power supply; moreover, TinyML has to face the additional security threats that can specifically affect small devices, that usually have to rely on less support from the hardware and the OS to implement security, and once deployed in the field, can be exposed to physical threats. The MPAI-AIF framework also IEEE P3301 standard produced by the MPAI community, and the IEEE P3301 Artificial Intelligence Framework Working Group described in the talk provides some answers and support to easy implementation of TinyML on MCU.

Andrea Basso, PhD (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, EPFL CH and Stanford Univ. USA) Is currently serving as research director in Synesthesia Italy where oversees the research and development activities in AI and IoT areas. He is the chair of the AIF-DC in MPAI. He is also advisor at the PROGRESS TECH TRANSFER investment fund. He serves also as CTO of MITO Technology (Italy), senior expert for the European Commission and for WIPO. In previous positions served as CEO of Sisvel Technology and CTO of the Sisvel group where he oversaw evolution of Sisvel strategic technology areas and worked on business strategy and new market development. He has 182 granted patents mainly in the area of multimedia indexing and video coding. While in Bell Labs and AT&T Labs –Research USA, as Research Manager has developed 22 years of research experience he led research on multimedia technologies and he has developed innovative services and architectures for IPTV and Over The Top (OTT). Andrea has been involved in the development of standards in several international bodies including IETF, ISO/MPEG, 3GPP, ITU-T and IMTC. He has published 60+ papers, several books and book chapters. He is a frequent speaker in international conferences and events.
