Discuss: Testing on animals - justifiable?

Animal use in science as test subjects has been a controversial issue from the very start. Many important discoveries were made — and new ones are still being made — only thanks to animal testing. But the debate is confounded by widespread misinformation among legitimate ethical concerns.

Between the 3Rs concept and the development of alternative methods, what is the usefulness of animals in research today? Are they still necessary?
