JOAO ALVES & PEDRO SILVA – WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE FUTURE?
It is an inevitable question. If software development is your chosen profession then at some point either a colleague, a friend, a recruiter or your manager will ask you the question. Have you thought about it at all? For most of us, that’s not an easy question to answer. In this presentation, we are going to try and make it clearer. We’ll talk about the usual options out there and help you through that reflection process so that you can steer your career to align it with your personal goals. Hopefully, by the end, you’ll have some tools to help you answer this question yourself.
When Joao and Pedro pitched this talk to us at // TODO we all kind of nodded that knowing nod – “awww hell yeah”. We suspect a lot of you are doing that reading this. So, come get some sage advice before someone asks you again...
ANDREW ELMORE – MANAGEMENT: DON’T DO IT!
Andrew has worked for very big and very small companies as a software developer. He now leads the platform team at ROLI, a music technology company.
In this talk (title firmly in cheek!) Andrew will encourage you to think about what it means to be a manager, and why you should, or shouldn’t, consider that path.
All three of us who organise // TODO are increasingly performing management roles in our day jobs so you can expect to find us down the front, pen and paper in hand!
IN CONVERSATION WITH…CLAIRE KNIGHT
This is a brand new format for us, the “In Conversation With…” format where we sit down with someone from our industry and have a chat to them about something they care about. It might be their life in tech, a specific topic, or well, whatever we want really. It’s a way for people to be involved with // TODO where the more commonplace format of a talk and slides doesn’t make sense. We’re really excited by the idea, and by our first participant…
Claire’s own website describes her thus..TECH LEAD, GIREVIK, WIFE, CAT MUM, EVERTON, KETTLEBELLS, LIFTING, FELLS, PHOTOGRAPHY, BEER, WITH A BIT OF CODING THROWN IN FOR GOOD MEASURE 😉
When we started discussing the idea of this chat she added “I’ve been the only woman in many jobs and I do think today’s femme identifying folk are less tolerant than people 15 years ago were. Or indeed we had to be to keep going…”
Come on, admit it, you’re already thinking the same thing as us…just twenty minutes?
Note: We understand that some people have other commitments, and cannot spend the whole evening with us. Because of this we start early, try to run very close to time, and we do not take questions after the talks. This allows everyone to benefit from the main part of the evening, and then, if you are able, you can join us after for the social where hopefully some, or all, of the speakers will be on hand. We think this makes // TODO more inclusive, but if you think we can do better, do let us know.
