[Online] Design Career: How to be an independent designer
Details
Hey, Product Friends! ✨ Welcome to Tokyo Design Community — one of the most active AI-driven product design communities in Japan, where design meets technology, business, and the tools shaping what comes next.
We're focused on AI-native practical insights, real-world experience, and learning together.
This session, we're tackling something a lot of designers quietly dream about but rarely pull off: how do you actually go independent — and build a craft, a career, and a calling on your own terms?
More designers than ever want to strike out on their own — to make things, start companies, and chart their own paths. But going solo isn't easy, isn't glamorous, and definitely doesn't happen overnight. This session breaks down what the journey really looks like — the hard-won lessons, the mindset shifts, and the honest realities — from someone who's been independent for the last 6 years. Are you:
💡 Dreaming of going independent but unsure where to start?
💡 Feeling stuck between the safety of a full-time role and the pull of building your own thing?
💡 Curious what it actually takes to sustain a solo design career long-term?
You might be wondering:
• What are the biggest lessons independent designers learn the hard way?
• How do I build a sustainable path without burning out or going broke? • What mindset separates designers who make it solo from those who don't?
• How do I turn my craft into a career and a calling — not just freelance gigs?

Topic: "How to be an independent designer"
I believe designers are born to make things, be founders, and chart our own paths — and nothing makes me more proud than being independent. But it's not easy, not sexy, not overnight. In this session, I'll share 8 lessons I learned on my journey of being solo over the last 6 years. Chris is a designer turned founder on a mission to help designers shape their craft, careers, and calling through education and media. Previously a Head of Design, he's worked with various startups and companies like Google, Nike, and 21st Century Fox.
