About us
Love reading? Hate the under-representation and under-appreciation of books by and about marginalized genders? Join us!
This is a group for people of all genders (trans*, non-binary, X-gender, genderqueer, third gender, and gender fluid people especially welcome) who want to read feminist books, books that aren't centered on cishet men, and/or books written by people other than cishet men, as well as discuss books from a feminist perspective. We'll have one pick each month per chapter (see below) online on Zoom. The main language is English, although some discussions will be conducted in Japanese. Let's get together to talk books, be merry, and smash the patriarchy—one book at a time!
★★★
Want to talk about books but not sure if you're a feminist?
Please spend some time reading up on basic feminist concepts on sites such as:
https://feministfrequency.com/resources/feminism-101/
https://geekfeminism.fandom.com/wiki/Feminism_101
https://femmagazine.com/feminism-101-what-are-the-waves-of-feminism/
On feminism in Japan: http://intersections.anu.edu.au/issue9/germer.html
Once you've spent some time thinking about feminist issues and can accept the basic premises of feminism as an ideology and political movement, please apply to the group! If you end up disagreeing, sorry but this is not the group for you :)
Please keep in mind that both book discussion and social events are based on intersectional feminist principles, and anyone who violates this understanding (through, e.g., racist/sexist/homophobic/transphobic comments, etc.) may be banned from the group. We hope to be an educational resource to an extent, so accidental violations will be dealt with via warning, but multiple violations, intentional ignorance, or clear trolling will result in a ban.
★★★
This group currently has two chapters:
① The Nonfiction (NF) Chapter will have diverse picks and be hosted monthly, usually on Thursday evenings. (From 2026, the Nonfiction Chapter will be hosted by Maddy, and include books and discussions in both English and Japanese.)
② The Science Fiction & Fantasy (SFF) Chapter will be hosted monthly by Rebecca (with Kristen supporting) on Tuesday evenings.
★★★
From January 2022, we have removed the subscription fee, and the monthly online meetups for any chapter will be free to join.
Meetup charges us approximately $120 USD per year to maintain the group. If you would like to support the group with a donation, please contact Rebecca about donation options!
★★★ Would you like to see a chapter for your favorite genre? We would love to have more online event organizers for different genres to expand this group to people interested in specific genres! Please contact Rebecca or Kristen via private message if you have an idea for another genre-based chapter.

We have a Goodreads group for organizing and suggesting books as well.
If you're looking for a general feminism discussion group, please consider joining the Tokyo Feminism Meetup.
