Although we won't have a fixed schedule, we will immediately go to the island, and have lunch there. Please bring your lunch.

In the afternoon we'll head over to Miura-kaigan, so please bring swimwear if you wish to go in the sea.

In the late afternoon let’s go to a cafe/bar nearby (optional).

We'll take a bus from Misakiguchi station at 10:23am, so please ensure you arrive before 10am. The bus fare seems to be ¥450 at the moment, so please prepare around ¥900 for a return fare.

➡️The island features a recommended course with signage that takes you around the island in about 90 minutes. From spectacular views of the ocean rushing into the island’s rock formations to countless species of birds, there is rarely a boring view during your stroll. Feel free to bring some snacks from Miura to enjoy the scenery at one of the many picnic spots along the route. Be careful of larger birds swooping in to steal your snack though!

Apart from its breathtaking nature, Jogashima Island is also home to quite a piece of international history. The Jogashima Lighthouse was built during the time of the Tokugawa Shogunate as part of a treaty with Great Britain but was actually designed by a French engineer. Although the original lighthouse was destroyed during the Great Kanto earthquake in 1923, its replacement still safely guides ships into Tokyo Bay.

➡️Sightseeing spots at Jogashima and nearby, most of which we will hopefully visit:

Jogashima Lighthouse - The western-styled unmanned lighthouse is the fourth oldest in Japan. It was built in 1870 and completely destroyed during the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923. The reconstruction of the lighthouse took till 1925.

Jogashima park - The two observatories within the park offer great panoramic views and are definitely worth a visit.

Cape Nagatsuro - It is one of the best places in the whole Kanto area to enjoy a sunset and the views over the Pacific Ocean are magnificent.

Jogashima-ohashi Bridge - The box-girder bridge with a length of 575m and a height of 21m has connected Jogashima with Miura since 1959.

Umanose-Domon - The arch-shaped rock is one of the most known landmarks of the island. Before 1923 Umanose-Domon was nearly under water, but due to the great Kanto Earthquake the rock was lifted up by 8m.

Mother Farm, is a wide-open area full of animals, activities, and great views of the Boso Hills. The farm accommodates a wide range of farm animals for petting and educational shows, as well as a seasonal flower exhibition. When we visit, we will see petunias.

The park has farm animals, including horses, sheep, goats, cows, and alpacas. Kids love the petting zoo, where they can interact with sheep and rabbit-like Patagonian mara. There are even farm activities such as seasonal fruit-picking and horseback riding.

The biggest event at the park is the sheep show, in which a real sheepherder introduces the audience to 19 different species from around the world, and gives a shearing demonstration. There's also other daily events such as a sheep run, a duck parade, and a pig race.

You can also ride the zip line or bungee jump.

Please bring your lunch. We will find a suitable spot in the park to eat. You can also purchase food in the park.

- entry to Mother Farm costs ¥1500.

We will ride the Kominato railway from Goi to Yorokeikoku, which should arrive at 10.12am. From there we need to take the INFREQUENT bus departing at 10.20am (route 01: bound for ごりやくの湯) as far as Kozawamata 小沢又 from where we will visit Suigetsuji 水月時.

From there we will take the WATERFALL COURSE, and then the BUNGALOW VILLAGE course (please see the map in the pictures).

We will end the day with a FREE FOOTBATH, so please bring a small towel.

We will meet at Minami-Sakurai station at 10am. Please kindly ensure you arrive punctually. There is a Tobu Urban Park Line train departing Kasukabe station at 9.49am, arriving at Minami-Sakurai at 9.56am.

Please understand we will then have to walk 30 minutes, so we will not wait for latecomers. If you are late, you will need to take a taxi.

We will join the Underground Temple Course from 11-11.55am. The tour cost is ¥1000, and you are responsible for making your reservation - bookings are available 1 month in advance, so from 20th August.

One of the world's largest underground discharge channels was built to protect low-lying areas in eastern Saitama prefecture from flood damage, which heavy rains have repeatedly flooded.

A large-scale flood control system takes swollen water from small and medium-sized rivers such as the Naka-gawa underground. Then, it discharges it into the Edo-gawa through a 6.3 km-long tunnel.

The rising river water is fed into the pressure control tank through an overflow dike on the river bank, a shaft like a massive cylinder (connecting the ground and underground), and a tunnel 50 meters underground.

Then, finally, it is discharged into the Edo River using a vast pump at the back of the tank. The pressure control tank is 177 m long, 78 m wide, and 18 m high, with 59 pillars supporting the ceiling. It is also known as the "Underground Temple of Disaster Prevention" because it resembles a giant temple.

The facility is usually in operation only a few times a year, and tours are offered on days when the facility is not in process.
