Details

To join this event please see below and send me a message on LINE. Without this, you will not find out our meeting point. EVERYONE needs to do this EVERY TIME, including those who have participated with me previously.

Shiriaburi is a custom of eating buns while burning the buttocks with fire, which is related to the legend of Tamura Maro's slaying of the evil dragon that has been passed down to Mt. Iwadono.

NOTE: If you want to actually roast your buns, by participating in the ceremony, you need to reserve your place in advance. It costs 2000 yen per adult or 5000 yen to have your name also called out and placed on goma tags. Both packages come with edible steamed buns! Please apply by phone (0493-34-4156). It is possible to apply on the day, but the number of buns is limited.

1200 years ago, when Mt. Iwadono still retained its original form, an evil dragon settled on Mt. Iwadono, causing snow to fall in the middle of summer and ravage the fields, causing torment to the villagers. It was there that General Sakagami Tamura Maro, the great general of the time, stopped by on the occasion of the conquest of Ezo.

Then, with the help of the thousand-handed Kannon-sama of the Iwaden Kannon Gohonzon, he successfully defeated the evil dragon. The monks and villagers of Iwaden Kannon entertained Tamura Maro with a warm bonfire and buns after returning from slaying evil dragons in the snowy mountains in the middle of summer. The custom that has been passed down to this day is "Shiriaburi".

Butt-roasting schedule:

  • 13:30 Reception starts - please come with plenty of time. This is only if we have members wishing to roast their butts.
  • 14:00 Reading of "Tamura Maro's Slaying of the Evil Dragon"
  • Around 14:15 Shiba Lantern Maintenance
  • Around 2:30 p.m., attendees begin to sit and enter the barrier and roast their buttocks while eating buns

Earlier in the day we will visit the nearby Monomiyama Park. Please note that this park does have seasonal exhibitions, however since our main purpose is the butt-roasting festival we will simply hope for a good impression at the park.

If you are coming by bus you can get the bus to this University from We will be taking a bus from Takasaka station to Daito Bunka University (route 212?) Monomiyama Park is about a 5-10 minute walk from the bus stop. Afterwards, the temple is a 5-minute walk from the park.

This custom of "shiriaburi" has been rooted in Iwaden and other areas for 1,200 years. Here at Iwaden Kannon, this custom of shiriaburi is passed down as a festival of "shiriaburi goma" together with the ritual of "Saito Goma", a mystery of Shugendo, which is based on mountain worship. In the Shiriaburi Goma training, "Tamura Maro's Slaying of the Evil Dragon" is narrated as a picture-story show, and the Shiba lantern protection by Yamabushi and others prays for good luck in getting rid of evil and no illness. With the flame of the Shiba lantern, you will burn your buttocks, eat the buns, and receive the power of the thousand-handed Kannon.

Monomiyama Park is a hilltop park in the Iwadono area of Higashimatsuyama. The park was initially just a viewpoint. Higashimatsuyama city developed a park around it in recent years.
Some of the park’s flora and fauna is newly planted, but they also worked with a lot of the nature that has been in existence for hundreds of years.

On two sides you can look out for miles on various towns and cities of Saitama. On another side you have a view of Higashimatsuyama and the valley of the park. f you go up into the Peace Museum‘s tower you get a birds eye view of nature’s collage of colour.

After the event, you may submit a review/evaluation. Please kindly rate appropriately as a low evaluation has an impact on the group. Things you should clearly understand in advance:

  1. I (Mark) am not a tour guide. For many events this will also be my first time, and events are mainly organised based on intensive internet research.
  2. Nature cannot be guaranteed, so flower festivals may be impacted by the recent climate.
  3. We aim to depart on time, however bus schedules might change. This is unavoidable.
  4. We request participants arrive EARLY. In rare cases we might wait a few minutes if we do not need to take a bus.
  5. The number of participants is not guaranteed. However we will not have large groups.
  6. The event finish time might be earlier or later than advertised. The hiking time might be longer/shorter than anticipated. Return bus times are not guaranteed.

How to calculate your review appropriately:
