Please join as for a fun day out in Yokosuka, where we will climb three small peaks, and then take a short boat ride across Tokyo Bay to Sarushima - Tokyo Bay’s only deserted nature island where visitors can have an adventure.
Please bring your lunch with you.
We will meet at Keikyu-Nagasawa Station BEFORE 10am. Please kindly ensure you arrive punctually.
We will begin with a beginner-friendly 3-hour hike starting at Keikyu-Nagasawa station (京急長沢駅) and ending at Tsukuihama station (津久井浜駅).
Each of the three peaks are low-level, taking around 30-minutes to climb to each summit.
We should see plenty of wildlife, and excellent views of Tsukuihama Beach, Izu's Oshima Island, and the Boso Peninsula.
We will then take a 20-minute train ride from Tsukuihama to Yokosuka-Chuo for Sarushima.
With an area of 1.6km, Sarushima is the only natural island in Tokyo Bay. It was used as a battery by the Tokugawa shogunate during the Edo period, and after the Meiji Restoration in 1868, the island was developed as part of the Yokosuka Navy Yard. Since it is located at the entrance of Tokyo Bay, it became a defense point to protect the capital of Japan.
Sarushima is now uninhabited, and after World War II, it was developed as a marine park. Nowadays, it is a popular leisure spot, only a 10 minute boat ride from Yokosuka.
On the island, there is a giant brick ruin. With cut walls, tunnels, and munitions depots. Going deeper, it is like a hidden secret base. These ruins were once forts designed to defend Tokyo; Japan’s capital city. It is reminiscent of Studio Ghibli’s “Castle in the Sky”. There is also an important brick ruin made using French techniques. It is designated as a national historic site.
It takes about an hour to walk around the island.
There are, in fact, no monkeys on Monkey Island. Sarushima's name came from an old legend that speaks of a large white monkey that guided a monk to a safe shelter after his ship drifted ashore on the island in a storm.

Additional fees (approximate):
Return ferry cost & park admission = ¥2000
Event fee:
¥1000 (regular prepaid fee) if you pay by 7pm on 9th October (PayPay, or in cash at an earlier event).
¥1500 in cash on the event day (10th October) - please bring the correct money.
If you don't have PayPay, please ask a friend or coworker to do the transaction for you (give them cash!).
Cancellation policy:
- Full refund given if cancellation is notified BY LINE MESSAGE by 7pm on 9th October.
- Reservation and then no-showing or late cancellation requires full payment of the event fee via PayPay within 24 hours. Further non-payment will result in removal from the group.

After the event, you may submit a review/evaluation. Please kindly rate appropriately as a low evaluation has an impact on the group. Things you should clearly understand in advance:
- I (Mark) am not a tour guide. For many events this will also be my first time, and events are mainly organised based on intensive internet research.
- Nature cannot be guaranteed, so flower festivals may be impacted by the recent climate.
- We aim to depart on time, however bus schedules might change. This is unavoidable.
- We request participants arrive EARLY. In rare cases we might wait a few minutes if we do not need to take a bus.
- The number of participants is not guaranteed. However we will not have large groups.
- The event finish time might be earlier or later than advertised. The hiking time might be longer/shorter than anticipated. Return bus times are not guaranteed.
