What we’re about
Retrogakko: Tokyo Retro Video Game Meetup
Retrogakkō is a Tokyo-based meetup for anyone who loves classic video games—from Nintendo and Super Famicom to Sega Genesis and Game Boy. We’re not about hardcore competition or speed runs, but about nostalgia, creativity, and exploring how retro games continue to inspire new ideas today.
At our gatherings, you can:
- Play classic consoles on original hardware and CRT monitors
- Explore the history and cultural impact of the game cartridge era
- Discuss how innovative design from this period still shapes art, technology, and storytelling
- Meet in inspiring spaces—art galleries, creative studios, and even museums—where games meet culture
- Enjoy a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere—open to locals, expats, and tourists alike
Whether you grew up with these consoles or are discovering them for the first time, Retrogakko is a creative salon for celebrating the design, history, and timeless fun of retro games.
Join us, have fun, and get inspired!

Step into a living, playable exhibition where retro gaming meets art gallery culture. NRG01 Cartridge Culture is Retrogakko’s debut event — a one-day celebration of classic video game systems presented at Central Space, a small art gallery in Nakano.
This is not just about playing old games — it’s about experiencing them as cultural artifacts, displayed and enjoyed on authentic hardware. The consoles come directly from the personal collections of a Japanese–American couple, blending gaming histories from both sides of the Pacific.
You’ll play on original consoles — Nintendo 64, Super Famicom, Game Boy, NES — all connected to CRT tvs (including SONY PVM monitors) for crystal-clear, era-accurate visuals. The event will be small and hands-on, with no lines, no rush, and plenty of time to explore each system.
Because of the venue’s size, we are offering advance reservation slots only. Each booking starts at ¥500 with a maximum of 12 participants per hour to ensure comfort and quality.Reserve your spot and be part of a one-day-only fusion of gaming history, nostalgia, and interactive media.
