Did you know there’s so much more to Skytree than just the tower itself? Just a short hop away from the famous landmark lies a peaceful, hidden side of the city with a true old soul.
Join me for a journey into Tokyo’s hidden neighborhood layers!
Come explore the real character of Sumida Ward — where rich history meets community-driven design, and I’m here to share the hidden stories of the neighborhood I call home.
We start with an artisan pour-over at machitoyama coffee, a tiny neighborhood cafe, before taking a morning walk through Oyokogawa Shinsui Park. This peaceful green oasis is actually a 17th-century medieval canal bed that used to be a vital shipping artery for the old capital, now beautifully transformed into a sunken urban park.
Next, we dive into The Tobacco and Salt Museum. Here, we will explore how two ordinary, everyday items were once absolute state monopolies that literally funded an Empire’s rise into a global power.
After checking out the exhibits, we will grab a local lunch nearby, then head over to BERTH COFFEE ROASTERY "Haru" for our afternoon specialty coffee. This sleek, minimalist cafe is a true architectural marvel, built directly inside a 60-year-old wooden structure.
We will wrap up our day at Koganeyu (黃金湯). Originally founded in 1932 as a vital neighborhood social hub when homes didn't have baths, this 90-year-old heritage bathhouse has been completely remixed by modern architects into a stunning designer sento, complete with a professional sauna and a vinyl record bar.
* For those excited to experience the baths and sauna, we plan to head inside from 15:00 to 17:00.
* Public baths not your thing? No problem! Feel free to skip the bath, grab a craft beer at the lobby bar, and chill. We will wrap up and disperse from here.
