About us
We are people interested in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) topics and how these intersect with society, culture and startups. This group is co-managed by organizers from Space Cafe Tokyo and Nerd Nite Tokyo, which each have monthly events. Other organizers and ideas are welcome -- get in touch!

Nerd Nite Tokyo #82: Making Glass and Climate Class
Study Abroad Pub - Shin Okubo, ShinOkuboコミュニケーションビル B1F, 2 Chome-11-23 Hyakunincho, Shinjuku City, Tokyo 169-0073, Tokyo, JP日本語の説明は下記にあります!
It’s the spooky month and we welcome you all back to Study Abroad Pub in Shin-Okubo, for another pair of illuminating and clarifying talks.
You know what’s spooky? Climate change. But our first speaker, Minami Shinohara, will talk about Climate Fresk, a collaborative card game that aims to provide actual understanding and cognizance of the ecological challenges that haunt us all, and perhaps inspire us into action.
Shifting from the climate to the silicate, our next speaker is CJ Hostetter, whose talk is about glass and how it is made. From fundamental chemistry to coloring and shaping, their talk is sure to reshape your knowledge of this wondrous material.
Doors open at 7 PM. Come early and get your drinks and socialize before the show starts at 8 PM!
You can also find our event information on Facebook and our website; check our homepage's sidebar for all of our social media and mailing lists.
Speakers:
- Minami Shinohara (shinomina3 on Linktree) — “Confessions of a Climate Fresk Coordinator: 800 Sparks of Climate Awareness”
- CJ Hostetter (CJ | design & games, @illuminesce_glass on IG, illuminesce glass art) — “Blown Away: The Chemistry and Technique of Everyday Glass”
When: October 16 (Friday), doors open 19:00, start 20:00
Where: Study Abroad Pub, just one stop away from Shinjuku Station on the Yamanote or Chuo lines (Google Maps)
Price: ¥1500 general admission / ¥1000 students; purchase in advance online or buy at the door!

Space Cafe Tokyo, Nov 2026 "Lost" in Space, On Purpose
Good Heavens British Bar Tokyo, 2f 5-32-5 Daizawa, Setagaya, Tokyo 155-0032, Tokyo, JP"'Lost' in Space, On Purpose:
How VR is Changing the Way We Explore the Universe"From the planets next door to galaxies billions of light-years away, our picture of the universe is built almost entirely from light we can never touch and increasingly, from datasets too vast and too complex for any human to take in by eye. The next generation of telescopes, like the giant SKA Observatory and the Vera Rubin Observatory, will only widen that gap, capturing the sky in staggering detail.
In this talk, Dr. Lucia Marchetti will start with a tour of what we currently know about the universe and the extraordinary structures within it, from star-forming clouds to galaxies and the cosmic web that connects them. She will then take you inside the UCT/IDIA Visualisation Lab, which she directs, to show how they're using digital planetaria and Virtual Reality to turn that data into three-dimensional worlds you can step into and explore. Drawing on recent examples from the scientific literature, she will show how VR, via iDaVIE, is already helping astronomers make sense of complex cosmic structures and how the same tool is opening up new ways of approaching complex data also in other scientific fields.
Speaker info:
Dr. Lucia Marchetti is a Senior Lecturer in Astronomy at the University of Cape Town and Director of the UCT/IDIA Visualisation Lab. She holds a PhD in Astronomy from the University of Padua, Italy. Her research focuses on multi-wavelength galaxy formation and evolution, strong gravitational lensing and big data visualisation (exploiting both planetaria and VR technology). She is an active member of several international collaborations within Vera Rubin, Euclid, 4MOST and MeerKAT surveys. A dedicated science communicator, she coordinates Soapbox Science South Africa. She is a member of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) Division J – Galaxies and Cosmology Steering Committee, of the South African Institute of Physics (SAIP), and of the African Astronomical Society (AfAS) as the co-founder or the African Planetarium Association.Speaker's website: https://lucia-marchetti.github.io/www/
