Kyōsai's World: The Israel Goldman Collection
suntory museum of art, 東京ミッドタウン, Tokyo, JPFor this meetup, we will check out an exhibition of Kyosai Kawanabe.
"Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831-89) was one of the most renowned artists of his day. His popularity has increased enormously in recent years, both in Japan and abroad. The artist's themes range from Shintō and Buddhist subjects to comic pictures with animals, ghosts and goblins. In each of Kyōsai's works we witness his technical brilliance and wit. This exhibition presents exquisite examples of paintings and prints from the Israel Goldman Collection, London, including many works that will be shown in Japan for the first time." First Exhibition
Surrealism: Expanding from the Visual Arts to Advertising, Fashion, and Interior DesignVenue
Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery
(https://www.operacity.jp/en/ag/access/)Admission Fee
¥1,800Information about the Exhibition
"Surrealism is an artistic movement that seeks a new reality, transcending a world divided by reason. Defined by André Breton in 1924, it emerged as a literary movement that was influenced by Freudian psychoanalysis focused on the subconscious and dreams. Certain trends can be found in surrealist art, such as scenes that are somehow disquieting and atmospheres that are dream-like, but rather than being a style of expression, surrealism is any kind of creative act that shares the spirit of attempting to achieve revolutionary change throughout the world. Viewing changing life and transforming the world as part of a single continuum, surrealism went beyond influencing art alone, having an impact on all of society, expanding to include areas intimately involved with daily life, such as magazines, advertising, fashion, and interior design.
The visual expression and broad impact of surrealism is still received with fresh surprise a century after the emergence of the movement. Bringing together masterpieces from a variety of genres held in collections throughout Japan, this exhibition presents a new picture of a surrealism that spread throughout society as a whole." "Ron Mueck (born 1958 in Australia, based in the UK) is a contemporary artist who has pushed the boundaries of figurative sculpture through his innovative use of materials, techniques, and methods of expression. These sophisticated works are created through close observations of humanity combined with philosophical reflection and are imbued with a sense of life. They capture the inner emotions and experiences of human beings, including loneliness, vulnerability, anxiety and resilience. The artist gained attention through his participation in Sensation: Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection at the Royal Academy of Arts, London (1997), and has since held solo exhibitions around the world."
