[CANCELED due to typhoon] Intro to Welding

Details

Welded is a practical skill which opens the doors for everything from repairs to crafts. The skill is equally suited to working on a car or building furniture, work surfaces, racks and shelving. Welding skills can be applied to artistic works both large and small.

Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW) is a very easy welding process to learn, in which a steel wire is fed through a handle into the steel to be welded. Work can be performed one handed, yet the process is highly versatile. No special gases are required. Unlike other forms of welding and brazing, which require deep practice and skill, acceptable welds are obtainable within the first day of learning.

This one day class will begin with lecture on:

  • Purpose and applications of welding
  • Various methods of welding and differences between welding and brazing
  • Techniques to assure good welds
  • Safety and operating procedures

Following the lecture, we will enter the workshop and you will have a chance to practice welding yourself by

  • Cutting steel pieces using abrasive saw
  • Grinding and preparing steel using a grinder
  • Welding practice with direct, hands on instruction

## Requirements

Welding has certain safety concerns. Please be sure to do the following:

  • Wear closed toe shoes, with full covering to the ankle. No sandles.
  • Wear a long sleeved shirt and full length pants. No shorts.
  • Clothes should preferably be old and “work ready”. They will get dirty and possibly damaged.
  • Hair longer than shoulder length should be tied back.
