Putting the You in User Research

Details

Software engineers (typically) love to code. It's a creative puzzle solving process that really engages the brain. However, we can sometimes forget that there will be people on the other end of the software we build.

Building GOOD software is not the same thing as building USABLE or WANTED software. So, what can a beginner software engineer do to better understand their users? This talk will go over some basic user research methods, explain why they're useful to someone who isn't a specialist in UX, and give software engineers some tips, tricks, and thoughts for how to build wanted and usable software.

Presented by Blade Frisch (he/they) from Michigan Technological University.

About the speaker: Blade is currently a PhD candidate at Michigan Technological University. Before this, he's worked as a software developer, teacher, assistive technologist, and startup founder. His research focuses on designing assistive technology and accessible user research methods.
