Topics in Psychology Goes to the Movies: Moonstruck

Details

Moonstruck is a romantic comedy-drama that explores love, grief, family dynamics, and the psychology of emotional risk and repression. Set in a tight-knit Italian-American community in Brooklyn, the film follows Loretta Castorini (played by Cher), a pragmatic, widowed bookkeeper who is engaged to Johnny Cammareri—a safe, uninspiring choice. When Johnny travels to Italy, Loretta meets his estranged brother Ronny (Nicolas Cage), a passionate, volatile baker with whom she develops an intense and transformative connection.

Themes such as fear of love, the tension between security and passion, and the healing potential of emotional risk are central. Moonstruck ultimately suggests that love defies logic, and that personal growth often comes through emotional upheaval anmed acceptance of the irrational aspects of human behavior.

Dr. Sharon Eve, psychotherapist and author, will host the discussion after we watch the movie. If you fiound that you are unable to attend this event, please remove your name from the guest list. $10 donation requested to cover our costs.
