**From Acrobatics to Ergonomics - A Field Report on How to Make Libraries Helpful**
Thanks to features like concepts, C++20 promised to make template meta-programming more approachable and expressive, especially for library designers. But as we quickly learned, template programming can still be surprising or frustrating — in the worst-case scenario, it's both.
In this talk, I’ll share lessons from the past 3–4 years of building high-performance, user-friendly C++ libraries, including:
* **EVE**, a SIMD abstraction layer designed for performance and portability.
* **KUMI**, a re-imagined tuple library with algorithmic support.
* **KIWAKU**, a toolkit for multi-dimensional arrays that aims to be efficient and ergonomic.
We’ll explore the practical challenges of designing ergonomic C++ APIs:
* Error messages that make sense: \`static_assert\` or concepts? How to avoid large template error stacks? ...
* APIs that align with user intuition: How do we provide options on the functions' semantics? How to design meaningful extension points, ...
* How bold design decisions can pay off: going sideways with standard practices, turning CTAD upside-down, ...
We'll discuss how C++20 features helped us reduce friction and increase clarity once we use them properly.
If you’ve ever screamed into the void over template errors, please join in!
**Joel FALCOU**
is an associate professor at the University Paris-Saclay and Researcher at the LISN - the Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire des Sciences du Numériques - in Orsay, France. His research focuses on studying generative programming idioms and techniques to design tools for parallel software development. And for some reasons, he does all of that in C++.
The main parts of his work are:
* the exploration of Embedded Domain Specific Language design for parallel computing on various architectures;
* the definition of a formal framework for reasoning about meta-programs.
Joel is the co-host of the C++FRUG Meetup, president of the C++FRUG Association, co-organizes the CPPP Conference, and is part entrepreneur, being one of the co-founder of CODE RECKONS, a company focused on bringing people and company up to date to the best and newest C++.

IA : accélérer malgré les risques ? [Meetup H+ #361]

[See English below]
**Tarif normal : 17 euros**
**Billetterie** :https://billetterie-maison-poincare.ihp.fr/animations-maison-poincare/maison-poincare-animations-visites-guidees/visite-guidee-sous-la-surface-les-maths
==========================================================
Dear Group Elements 🌌
I invite you to join me for a mathematical afternoon at the Institut Henri Poincaré, exploring surfaces, geometry, and abstraction. We’ll begin with a guided visit of the exhibition Beneath the Surface: Mathematics, and continue with a second, free exhibition at the same venue dedicated to Alexander Grothendieck, one of the most influential mathematicians of the 20th century. Two exhibitions, one place, one journey — from visible surfaces to abstract mathematical worlds. 🌌
After the visits, for those who wish, we can continue the discussion over a coffee or a drink nearby — *to share impressions, ask questions, or simply extend the experience.*
Here is the page for the exhibition Beneath the Surface: Mathematics:
https://www.ihp.fr/fr/actualites-science-et-societe/sous-la-surface-les-maths
**Full price ticket: 17 euros**
**Ticketing:** https://billetterie-maison-poincare.ihp.fr/animations-maison-poincare/maison-poincare-animations-visites-guidees/visite-guidee-sous-la-surface-les-maths
Exhibition dossier:
https://www.ihp.fr/sites/default/files/media/downloads/Dossier_presentation_Surface.pdf
*How can a 3D object be represented in 2D? How can convincing video game characters and environments be created? What is the connection between sewing, geography, and computer graphics?*
*With the exhibition Beneath the Surface: Mathematics, discover the mathematical principles hidden behind these questions.*
*Through games, explanatory videos, measuring instruments, and mathematical models from the Institut Henri Poincaré’s collections, the exhibition explores how digital surfaces are created.*
*The first part of the exhibition focuses on representing 3D objects on a 2D plane — a problem already explored by Renaissance painters. The journey then continues across the surface of the Earth: how do we go from the globe to a world map? Finally, the secrets that make video games feel so real are revealed, from a drop of water to the texture of skin, including light rendering.*
*Fractals, ruled surfaces, hyperbolic paraboloids… this journey through geometry and topology will surprise you and help you understand that beneath the surface, there is far more mathematics than one might think.*
Exhibition designed by the Institut Henri Poincaré and the Musée des Arts et Métiers, with the support of the IHP Endowment Fund.
Next, we can discover the free exhibition dedicated to ***Alexander Grothendieck:***
https://www.ihp.fr/fr/actualites-science-et-societe/grothendieck-mathematicien-le-temps-des-reflexions-1973-1991
*There was a mathematician who, at the height of his fame, abandoned scientific research to advocate radical ecology, became a professor at the University of Montpellier, devoted himself to meditation, and was regarded by some as a prophet and by others as an eccentric, before disappearing. One could build from these episodes the biography of a “terrifying genius” and write stories filled with anecdotes and picturesque portraits designed to entertain lovers of famous scientists.*
*Our approach is different. This exhibition presents Alexander Grothendieck the mathematician, keeping as far as possible from biographical drama.*
*The traces of his continuous mathematical research between 1973 and 1991 are both visible and abundant, as shown by the thousands of pages Grothendieck wrote between his arrival in Montpellier and his departure for the village of Lasserre in Ariège. These pages form the core of the exhibition’s documentation and imagery.*
*Visitors are invited to follow fragments of the itinerary of Grothendieck’s mathematical explorations. The territories of this new continent are the mathematical theories he discovered, and the stages of this journey are the texts he wrote.*
See you very soon! 🌌

The session begins with an inspiring introduction, exploring a new artistic concept to spark your creativity, followed by self-guided practice, similar to our regular workshops. Open to all levels, this workshop offers a relaxed and supportive space to explore and develop your artistic style. As always, posing for you are professional fine art models affiliated with the Beaux-Arts de Paris and other Parisian life drawing ateliers. Please bring your preferred art materials. After the session, we come together for a relaxed drink and chat. It's a chance to share your drawings from the session and discuss drawing tips & techniques. You can also connect with fellow artists, exchange contacts, and promote your artistic projects.

Azure CBUS January: Learn Infrastructure-as-Code Through Minecraft
## Learn Infrastructure-as-Code (the FUN Way) — Through Minecraft 🎮☁️
**Joint Meetup: Azure CBUS × Columbus HashiCorp User Group × DevOps Columbus**
What if learning Terraform and Infrastructure-as-Code didn’t feel like a whitepaper… but more like a game?
Join us for a joint Azure CBUS, Columbus HashiCorp User Group, and DevOps Columbus meetup where **Mark Tinderholt** \(Principal Architect\, Microsoft Azure \| HashiCorp Ambassador \| “The Azure Terraformer”\) shows how **Minecraft** can be used as a surprisingly powerful way to understand real-world Infrastructure-as-Code concepts.
In this session, Mark will demonstrate how Terraform and Azure can be used to provision, configure, and manage Minecraft servers—while teaching the same patterns you’d use for production cloud infrastructure.
### What we’ll cover
* Infrastructure-as-Code fundamentals using **Terraform**
* Provisioning real infrastructure on **Azure**
* Applying **IaC best practices** (immutability, repeatability, versioning)
* How playful environments like Minecraft make complex concepts *click*
* Why learning through experimentation beats click-ops every time
### Who should attend
* Developers, platform engineers, and cloud engineers
* Terraform users (new or experienced)
* Anyone curious about Infrastructure-as-Code but tired of boring examples
* Minecraft fans who want to see it used in a totally unexpected way
No prior Minecraft experience required—just curiosity and a willingness to learn infrastructure the fun way.
Come for the blocks, stay for the Terraform. 🧱➡️📐

Columbus Code & Coffee 83 @ Improving
Columbus Code & Coffee is an inclusive, informal co-working session. People of all skill levels attend, and we love it that way. Many people (optionally) bring projects to work on, and many other people (optionally) socialize the entire time. It's entirely up to you!
**What to Expect at the Intro Circle**
\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~
Near the beginning of the event (1:30 pm), we do a standup:
* Organizer announcements, updates, and logistics
Round 1 - (7 secs max):
* Your name
* What you're working on
* What you can help others with
Round 2:
* Community events you wanna plug. If none, that's cool too.
Round 3:
* Job opportunities you're hiring for OR announce that you are looking for one. If none, that's cool.
After the introduction circle, everything is self-organized! Feel free to work alone, pair up, attend one of our workshops/presentations, or mingle!
