Learning to Design Systems for Scalability — A Practitioner’s Perspective
**Registration Link:** https://luma.com/mu4wsv8t
Scalability is often treated as a purely technical challenge, something to solve with the right architecture, tools, or infrastructure. In reality, it is just as much about how we think.
In this talk, Fion shares her journey of learning to design for scalability through real-world experience: navigating evolving requirements, growing systems, and the trade-offs that come with them. Rather than focusing on deep technical patterns, the session explores the decision-making process behind building systems that can grow sustainably.
Through practical examples, she will reflect on:
* How to recognise when scalability becomes a concern
* Balancing simplicity vs. future-proofing
* Breaking down systems into manageable, evolvable components
* Learning from constraints, failures, and iteration
This session is designed for developers who are early to mid in their journey, or anyone looking to strengthen their intuition around building systems that don’t just work today but continue to work as they scale.
**Agenda**
6:30 PM - 6:45 PM: Registration + Networking
6:45 PM to 6:55 PM: Intro to WDS
7:00 PM to 7:10 PM: Intro to Zenika
7:15 PM to 8:15 PM: Learning to Design Systems for Scalability by Fion Sim, Zenika + Q&A
8:15 PM onwards : Networking + Phototaking + Clean-up

Technique Tango III Group Class (Adults, Advanced)
**For ages 17 and above.**
Influenced by the Spanish and African culture, the Tango is sensual and passionate, one of the most fascinating dances. Stylized strides dominate this dance, along with periodical sharp and staccato movements. Tango’s passionate nature evokes a strong connection to the music, your partner and the audience, a dance that is exciting and often easy to learn. Its dramatic nature also makes Tango a very popular dance that is often featured in blockbuster movies; a favourite dance for those who enjoy drama within a dance.

Music Lovers Meetup #3
Our third meetup will be to the indie venue of Kultyard, located near Outram Park. They've got a live music jam on Saturdays that's got a great vibe and their tacos are really good.
We'll each pay for our own food and/or drink (let's support the venue by purchasing something), and get to enjoy what's likely to be some experimental and lively music that evening. It is pretty free and easy so if you might need to arrive late or leave early that's fine too.
To join just RSVP and I'll help make the table reservation for the group. So the venue doesn't hold seats it doesn't need to, do let me know one day before if you're not able to make it anymore. I'm keeping the max group size a little smaller at 10 (including me) so it's easier to get tables and make conversation too (especially for an introvert like me!).
*Bear with me as we figure out over time what days and times work well for folks, feel free to comment below too so I know.
Diana
Women After 40 - Teatime Meet and Chat
Meet other like-minded ladies 40 and above to chat, talk about life, fitness, food, books and other activities that we like!
We'll be keeping the group size small so we can have deeper conversations and connections.
NOTE:
1. This is a social meetup for building social connections. Please do not use this space to sell or promote any products or services; there are other meetups for that.
2. As we're meeting at a cafe, everyone who attends the meetup needs to order something from the cafe at the very least. I have no arrangements with the cafe, but I think it common courtesy for using their space.
Looking forward to meeting you ladies soon!

Pipeline Trek Reverse
***Guests are not allowed; only members are permitted***. All must register on this page. **Only members on the RSVP list are permitted**.
**Why is no guest allowed?**
**ALL MUST READ & AGREE TO OUR DISCLAIMERS BELOW.**
**Reason: Bad experience from past events: Guests often don't read our disclaimer & follow our rules, as they are not required to RSVP,** which is typically done by friends who are members of our group.
=> **Guest**, *please sign up as our member - it is free anyway.*
Organiser: "*It has been a very long time since we hiked this before COVID times. Pipeline sections are now all fenced up, and we are no longer able to walk on them physically. Let's go check them out*".
We don't know how much the trails have changed, any new obstacles or challenges, any section blocked, etc.
**Do be prepared for some exhilarating scrambling, wrong way, U-turn or change of route. In a few sections, you will be under the sun. But don't expect to hold an umbrella and walk. The pipeline trail is not a walk**. If you're not sure you're up for such uncertain challenges, don't RSVP.
Ⱶ●Ⱶ●Ⱶ●Ⱶ●Ⱶ●Ⱶ●
**What's the plan**?
The "Marsiling Pipeline Trek" is a hiking trail that follows the route of a buried water pipeline from Marsiling to the Bukit Panjang area, offering moderate difficulty with steep grassy slopes and varied landscapes, including open grasslands and forested patches.
We will cover at least 10-13 km of different trails of varied terrains. Some difficult sections where hands are needed besides your legs.
**Part 1: Scenic walk through Chestnut Park.**
**Part 2: is the pipeline trail, a 7 KM trail** full of unpaved paths, mini hills, and of course, the titular pipes themselves. Gloves will be needed. There will be muddy trails, some bashing, U-turns, or going the wrong way etc. This is not a walk in the park. Don't join if you are not in for these.
𝗕𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸 & 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗺. 𝗔 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 hiking 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹.
Meet point: https://maps.app.goo.gl/4ejp9jJ2ZjVUf4he9
End Point: Marsiling
**Who is Suitable**?
NOT for beginners. For regular walkers/hikers who are not afraid of the sun/rain. Pipeline trek is not a walk; it involves some difficult sections as it's not a straightforward trail.
Be prepared for the long distance of walking. There will not be any sweepers, so you are to keep pace with the group or find your way out.
𝗠𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀!
Hiking attire & Gloves. At least 1.5 litres of water, sunblock, rain gear, sun protection accessories, snack/energy bars - lunch may be late.
**Shoe**: Wear comfortable hiking shoes [a few sections of pipeline].
Basic first-aid for cuts.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗳 𝗶𝘁 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀?
Please stay informed & check this event page for updates & the final decision of the event.

Rumba I Group Class (Adults, Advanced)
**For ages 17 and above.**
Rumba, often nicknamed the “dance of love”, is derived from the Afro-Caribbean ballroom dance “Son” popular in the 1930s. Its slower, smooth and continuous hip actions, known as the ‘Cuban movement’, give it a romantic and sensual feel.
Rumba is a versatile dance that can be danced to Latin music and contemporary pop music, a romantic dance that is perfect for weddings, shows and social events.
