This workshop brings together Australia and Canada-based philosophers to examine how families, schools, and societies negotiate the responsibilities and expectations of raising children. Presentations will explore the evolving landscape of parental rights and identities, the impact of low expectations on children’s development, and the processes through which values are transmitted across generations. Speakers will also analyse how educational systems reproduce or challenge social class hierarchies, and debate who should bear the financial and social costs of childrearing. Together, these discussions aim to illuminate the tensions and possibilities at the heart of contemporary childhood and family policy. The Association for Science and Reason will be holding our regular in-person Skeptics in the Pub event. (Monthly Zoom meetings will continue as usual, but we will also be doing monthly in-person events on the second Tuesday of every month). Our previous venue, Prenup Pub, has closed, so we will meet this month at the Town Crier Pub, 115 John St, a 9 minute (600m) walk from St Andrew Station. It has very good food and a large seletion of beer, but was quite noisy last month. We'll give it another try to see what it is like this time. We will get together for a social event to say hello to people we may have only met on-line and to reconnect with some long-time acquaintances. We will not be having a presentation or a speaker, just a chance to sit down and have a meal and/or a beverage and a conversation with a pleasant group of fellow skeptics. Food and beverages are available from the menu. Foods include a full menu from soups and appetizers to entrées and dessert. The beverage menu includes over 50 different beers on tap, many bottled beers, a selection of wines, various cocktails, and as well as non-alcoholic drinks. *The Ministry of Time* is a 2024 debut novel by Kaliane Bradley. In the 21st century, the government of the United Kingdom finds a door that allows time travel. They create the Ministry of Time. The Ministry rescues several historical figures and brings them to the present; to avoid disrupting the past, they specifically choose people who would have died in their original timelines. In a moment in which anti-migrant rhetoric, ethnonationalism, and authoritarian populisms are on the rise, it becomes increasingly important that political theorists do more than offer a moral indictment of racism and xenophobia. In this talk, I contend that Frantz Fanon’s sociogenic approach to the critique of ‘race’ and racialization makes a valuable contribution, even in postcolonial conjunctures that have moved beyond colonialism’s crude Manichean binaries. I read Fanon as a diagnostician of the social pathologies produced by colonialism and white supremacy, showing how he worked from the colonized subject’s experiences of inferiorization and the colonizer’s experiences of racial superiority and *self-mystification* to advance a negative critique of racial hierarchies. Sarah Bufkin https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/staff/profiles/gov/bufkin-sarah Assistant Professor in Political Theory Department of Political Science and International Studies University of Birmingham **About the Speaker:** My research sits at the intersection of antiracist political theory and Critical Theory, including that of the German Frankfurt School, French poststructuralism, and the British Birmingham School of Cultural Studies. I am currently working on a book project focused on Frantz Fanon's sociogenic method of antiracist critique. Drawing in part on my doctoral thesis, I argue that the failure to theorize 'race' has substantial consequences for continental political theory including but not limited to understanding the reproduction of racial injustice. This session interrogates the functional transition of ethical theory from academic discourse to industrial application. By examining the nuances of "on-the-ground" ethics, we will explore the pedagogical and structural methodologies required to move industry stakeholders beyond mere conceptual acknowledgement toward robust ethical activation. We will note the fiction between theoretical normative frameworks and the pragmatic constraints of the private sector. Ultimately, this discussion aims to identify how applied ethics can be effectively institutionalized within modern industry. **🏛️ WHAT'S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?** Practical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic, practice communicating, and building a community. All with no ‘official’ philosophy knowledge required! 😎 Practical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic. The goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking, Communication, and Community 🙌 **📓 HOW DOES IT WORK?** Each week, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared, generally in the [Whatsapp group](https://tally.so/r/ZjaPO0), along with jump-off points to get the conversation going. When groups get bigger than 7-8 people, it’s important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture. **General Meeting Agenda** Each Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline: * 19:00-19:15 - People arrive and chat, get to know each other before the ‘official' start. * 19:15-19:25 - Meeting introduction, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines. * 19:25-20:45 - Break into small groups - introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the ‘jump-off’ questions as needed, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. It’s not obligatory to answer them. * 20:45-21:00 - Bring everyone back together to discuss conclusions of the topic - each group gives a short 1-minute summary. Organizer concludes the meeting and everyone takes a group photo. * 21:00 - The official meeting is over but it’s a great opportunity to get to know people in a non-structured environment, so we often stick around, chat, and get to know each other. **🧧PRICING?** Practical Philosophy Club is FREE to attend! The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event. Our March speakers are Molly Gaines and Zack Parrish, co-organizers of the Secular Education Association: They will share their story of how a small group of Ohio parents grew into a national organization tracking released-time religious instruction and other church–state issues in public schools. The presentation will cover SEA’s early wins and hard lessons, what we’re seeing nationally right now, and how local advocates can play a meaningful role in protecting public education. So this month's prompt is more general. I think we can all agree that we are living in "unique" times that require coping skills. I think that one role and/or purpose of philosophy is to help us deal with our daily lives and our "unique" times. So, let's share our feelings and thoughts about which philosopher/philosophy we turn to in order to deal with our crazy events. Who/what helps you stay focused in your daily life and helps you sleep at night. I find that Stoicism with a little philosophical pessimism mixed in goes a long way in helping me deal with what I see as very destructive, fearful and mean spirited public policies at both the state and federal levels. They are powerful, set-based methods to view data in unexpected ways. Window functions provide easy, set-based solutions to solve some common problems: * Using running totals * Performing operations in intervals * Identifying data gaps and islands * Performing aggregates without losing detail Many people are confused by window functions and do not know how to use them properly. This session will explore window functions, how they work, and how to use them. Demonstrations with several examples will solidify how window functions can simplify queries and make them more powerful.
