Shadowdark One-Shot Series: Tower on the Knoll
Shadowdark One-Shot Series: Tower on the Knoll
**Looking for Players New And Old:** Hi y'all, I'm Andrew. I'm looking to jumpstart an Old-School Renaissance (OSR) TTRPG group in the Greenbelt/College Park area. No experience is necessary. Our first session will be a level 1 one-shot designed by me. In it, players investigate a stone tower on behalf of an army looking to occupy the surrounding lands. For those with limited experience with the OSR or Shadowdark, take a look bellow. I'm excited to see you guys there and get this thing rolling! **Shadowdark, Our Old-School Style Rule System:** Shadowdark is a system designed to bring together the principles of early D&D gameplay and the familiar and intuitive nature of modern systems. Those of you familiar with D&D and Pathfinder will find the six attribute/D20 roll-over system familiar, however, the way the game is played is fundamentally different in a few ways: * **Character Survival Not Guaranteed:** In some games, the DM works to ensure characters don't die easily or without a good reason. In Shadowdark, danger lurks in every corner and characters can die at any time depending on how they react to their environment. If they want their characters to survive, players must play carefully, avoiding traps and sneaking past enemies too powerful for them. The more hardcore style of gameplay encourages players to consider their risk management strategy and to develop creative solutions to avoid a perilous fate. * **Player Smarts Over Dice Rolls:** Yes, you'll still roll to see if you can push the door down or cast a spell, but you won't be rolling as many perception checks to search for traps or distract guards as in other games. Players are encouraged to play smart and communicate what they are doing in detail. "I run my hands along the face of the wall, checking to see if there are any strange indents or hidden buttons" is a lot more interesting than "I check for hidden doors, I rolled a 15" * **Rules-Light:** This game is simpler than D&D and Pathfinder in terms of how many rules there are. This opens things up for more creativity in our actions while still giving us a bounded ruleset to keep things fair and interesting.

In Search of True Friendship (Free Event)
In Search of True Friendship (Free Event)
**MLK Library - Room 401A** Why do so many of us feel like we are alone when we have so many more ways of connecting with others than ever before? Are we missing out on forming true friendships by failing to consider the spiritual impulse for those connections? It seems to be our instinct – and need – to be connected to others. But we also seem to have created increasingly fractured and isolating social structures that don’t actually require us to build those connections – much less with anyone who may look or think differently than we do. So how might recognizing our reality as spiritual beings, as all of us being part of one human family, help us understand where this instinct comes from – and what we need to fulfill it? How might it inform the types and qualities of relationships we look for – and who with? And beyond our individual relationships, what would it look like to reconfigure our communities to make finding and building connection easier for all of us? How can we create a culture of community that supports everyone in this search, that allows every individual to thrive not despite but with and because of the larger diversity of people around them? What are the spiritual principles and qualities we need to build and nurture these diverse, inclusive, and connected communities? Come join a different kind of conversation – one that welcomes every perspective in a search for the deeper truths that unite us – as we discuss the spiritual perspective offered by the Bahá’í Teachings on the search for true friendship. Please join us for a lively discussion as we explore how we can build true community together. *“Do not be content with showing friendship in words alone, let your heart burn with loving kindness for all who may cross your path.”* – Bahá’í Teachings **\*\*\* This event is free and open to all regardless of background or belief. Donations will not be accepted.**
Pippin - May Option
Pippin - May Option
Our first option for *Pippin* at Signature Theatre will be Saturday, May 30 at 8PM. If you cannot make that performance, we'll have another option, likely in July--please fill out this Doodle poll with all the options that can work for you: [https://doodle.com/group-poll/participate/e9XxzvJd](https://doodle.com/group-poll/participate/e9XxzvJd). I am unable to make the May 30th performance, so folks will need to buy their own tickets. You can purchase on [TodayTix](https://www.todaytix.com/booking/seating-plan?product_id=44342&content_product_id=44342&venue_id=10901&product_type=show&qt=2&showtime_id=2299954&slot=20:00&date=2026-05-30) or from [Signature Theatre's website](https://tickets.sigtheatre.org/syos/performance/13864). For folks who like front row seats, you could form a ticket block in Orchestra North. Stephen Schwartz’s (*Godspell*, *Wicked*) musical masterpiece of purpose, ambition, lust and glory sizzles for summer, thrillingly staged as only Matthew Gardiner can do. Medieval traveling performers bring to life the story of Pippin, the restless heir of Charlemagne, on his quest for purpose. Dreaming of greatness, he dives into war, passion, and even murder—only to find himself disillusioned at every turn in this dazzling and provocative coming-of-age parable about what it means to be extraordinary. Join us for this sardonic and witty extravaganza, flush with spellbinding dance and the iconic songs “Corner of the Sky,” “Magic to Do” and “Morning Glow.”

Welcome, readers! Our May read is **_Kindred_ by Octavia E. Butler.** The story follows Dana, a Black woman living in 1976 California, who is suddenly pulled back to a Maryland plantation before the Civil War. She learns her survival is tied to a white slaveholder’s son. Forced to move between centuries, she must endure the brutal realities of slavery while fighting to hold on to her identity. Tense, intimate, and unforgettable, Kindred explores how the past refuses to stay buried. Looking forward to discussing with everyone! We will meet at Zaftig Brewing Co in their event room in the back. We are welcome to bring in our own food, but **drinks must be purchased at the bar.** Happy reading! 📖
