Green AI with JobRunr + Finding the Spark
Green AI with JobRunr + Finding the Spark
The **BeJUG** is back on February 18, kindly hosted by [AE](https://www.ae.be/), for an evening that blends technical innovation with personal perspective. This edition features **two talks** that approach our craft from different angles: \- Green AI with JobRunr: Sustainable training and inference on the JVM by Ronald Dehuysser \- Finding the Spark: A Career Reset Button by Loïc Magnette Come join us for this next event! **Schedule** \- 18:00: Doors open \+ Food and Drinks \- 18:45: Intro and BeJUG updates \- 18:50: Talk 1 \- 19:35: Little break \- 19:45: Talk 2 \- 20:30: Mingling \+ Drinks **Topics** **Green AI with JobRunr: Sustainable training and inference on the JVM** AI is booming - but so are its energy costs and carbon emissions. What if your Java application could schedule AI training and inference tasks not only when resources are available, but also when energy is greener and cheaper? In this talk, we’ll show how JobRunr, a distributed background job scheduler for the JVM, can be used to orchestrate local AI workloads in a carbon-aware way. By combining JobRunr’s scheduling capabilities with carbon-intensity data and dynamic cloud pricing, we can: \- Train and fine\-tune models when electricity is cleanest \- Run inference jobs where latency meets sustainability \- Reduce CO₂ emissions and operational costs without sacrificing performance You’ll learn how to integrate local AI workloads using Ollama into your Java stack, configure carbon-aware scheduling, and measure both sustainability impact and cost savings. By the end of this session, you’ll know how to cut CO₂ emissions and costs while keeping your AI workloads running reliably and see how you can make AI work for both your business and the planet. **About Ronald** Meet Ronald Dehuysser, a software architect from Belgium and creator of JobRunr. Seamlessly integrating with Spring Boot, Micronaut, and Quarkus, JobRunr is Ronald's solution for efficient distributed background job processing. When he's not working on open-source software, he is probably either rock climbing or sipping a fine Belgian Duvel beer. **Finding the Spark: A Career Reset Button.** A few years ago, I hit a strange point in my career. On paper, everything looked fine: good projects, solid skills, a stable job but inside, something had gone quiet. The excitement I used to feel when writing code was gone. I wasn’t looking for a new language or a better framework, I was just trying to understand why I had stopped caring. At some point I decided to join the wider Java Community. I expected to learn techniques and tips, but what I actually found was something much deeper. I met people full of energy and generosity who reminded me that behind every line of code there’s a story, an exchange, a spark. Something I believed I had lost was gradually rebooted by that sensation of belonging. That rediscovery is the topic of this talk. About how meaning can be restored through contributing, sharing, and connecting. You'll discover what inspires and motivates us to do our work, how community can change how we grow as developers, and why giving back frequently results in more than you might anticipate. I hope this story helps you understand that a new relationship with your craft, your community, and yourself is the answer to career apathy, not a new language. **About Loïc** Loïc Magnette is a seasoned software developer with a strong background in consulting. Currently a senior developer at Oniryx, he specializes in Java and Angular, delivering innovative solutions and sharing his knowledge as a speaker. As a co-organizer of the Belgian Java User Group (BeJUG), he fosters connections within the developer community. Outside of tech, Loïc’s passion for wildlife inspires his work and creativity.
Trump’s “3D Chess” in Geopolitics: Strategy or Improvised Disruption?
Trump’s “3D Chess” in Geopolitics: Strategy or Improvised Disruption?
**This week’s session is a structured debate.** The question is not whether you *like* Donald Trump. The question is whether his geopolitical actions represent a coherent long-term strategic recalibration — or short-term transactional disruption. We aim for analytical distance. No cult energy. No Trump Derangement Syndrome. We examine the **who**, **what, why, when, and how**: * What concrete strategic shifts occurred under his policies? * Why did he use tariffs, sanctions, NATO pressure, and bilateral deals as leverage? * When does unpredictability strengthen negotiation? * How did his approach change global alignments? * Did he accelerate the shift from cooperation to competitive realism? This debate welcomes different conclusions: * Was this strategic chess? * Was it destabilizing improvisation? * Was it a transitional phase in a multipolar world? * Did it expose fragilities in the liberal international order? ## **What Makes This Different** We are not here for partisan tribalism. **We welcome:** * **Pro-Trump arguments** * **Anti-Trump arguments** * **Structural/system-level critiques** We reject: * Moral hysteria * Slogan repetition * Performative outrage * Intellectual laziness * TDS This is not a space for ideological defense teams. It is a space for stress-testing ideas. No one will be shamed for defending or criticizing Trump. Ideas will be challenged. Individuals will not. ## **Debate Principles** * Speak from analysis, not emotion * Bring facts, context, or comparative examples * Distinguish personality from policy outcomes * Argue ideas, not identities Strong disagreement is expected. Good faith is required. *** ## **Location & RSVP** 📍 Ixelles – public bar Exact venue shared via WhatsApp after RSVP. Join here to confirm attendance: https://chat.whatsapp.com/LX7UkWGZ3UdLQWLBvNdezN Briefly introduce yourself when joining. AS always, no creeps or people who are looking to date.
Fun Debate : Dogs vs Cats
Fun Debate : Dogs vs Cats
Loyal goofballs or purry fluffballs? From the ridiculous amounts we spend on our pets to the way we proudly identify ourselves as “dog people” or “cat people,” our furry companions say a lot about how we live and maybe even who we are. So let's tackle one of humanity’s oldest, and most important, divisions: Team Dog vs Team Cat 😄 Expect playful arguments, friendly chaos, and zero actual animals harmed 🐶🐱 Just strong opinions and good vibes 😊 This debate will follow a British Parliamentary format with eight debaters split into four teams of two. Participants who wish to speak are highly encouraged to bring a paper and pen. You are welcome to participate even if you have no prior debating experience. ⚠️ Disclaimer: We aim for debates that are respectful, constructive, and welcoming. • Respect ideas and people: Listen actively, stay quiet while others speak, and debate arguments, not identities or beliefs. • Be concise and civil: Keep questions short and relevant; avoid hostility, hate speech, or discrimination. • Respect boundaries and time: No unwanted advances or suggestive behavior; arrive on time to avoid disrupting the debate. • Follow moderators: They guide the discussion and ensure fairness. Looking forward to seeing you there 😊

This ensures the session is manageable and everybody gets enough chances to participate. Therefore, only the people on the "attendee list" can participate in the session. **Waiting list**: People on the waiting list should keep an eye on the updates in case someone from the attendees' list drops and you get their spot. It's important for the people on the waiting list also to update their RSVP status if they already know they won't be joining the session. **Do you just want to observe?** In the regular session, we do not have an audience, only participants. This will give the next person on the waiting list a chance. * Emergencies aside, please update your RSVP status on time. Canceling at the last minute or just 1 hour before isn't helpful. * If we see a pattern from someone not showing up after confirming or last-minute cancellations, we reserve the right to prohibit session access. * Please write a comment if you cancel and your spot becomes available. With this, others will get an extra notification. **Improv Session Format** The session is held in English. The session has three sections: Warm-up, Scene games, and Cool down. **Warmup:** Quick group games are played to break the ice and get the creative juices flowing. **Scenes:** Then we move on to scene games. These are mostly from short-form improv, which can include different games with various gimmicks, like story building, character work, guessing, etc **Cool down:** One or two short group games to end the session. The rules are explained by the moderator before each game. There is no obligation to participate in games you are uncomfortable with. There can be feedback after a game is played. This is so we learn from each other and gain skills and insights. **Tip**: If you are new, pay attention to the regular players when they are performing and notice small details, like how a stage is cleared before a scene, how to enter a scene, and how to collaborate with each other. * **Who is it for?** Anyone interested in improv! We accept participants at all levels, beginners and advanced. This is a great place to start if you are new to improv. The basics will be explained. We only require the "Yes, and...!" spirit! If you are an advanced player and have ideas and games to share and work on, please do let us know. We look forward to welcoming you and doing improv!

NEW TIME-- 6 PM!! Deep Conversation-- Question Chosen in Session
NEW TIME-- 6 PM!! Deep Conversation-- Question Chosen in Session
Welcome to our weekly event in the upstairs room of The Sister Café, rue Chair et Pain 3, one block from the Grand Place. Please get there early enough to order your drink at the bar first. Thank you! After introductions we will collect questions from the group participants, choose one by voting then discuss it for an hour. Then most of us stay for drinks and bizarre conversations. Past questions have been wide and not confined to academic philosophy: What is a genuine friend? Is social media turning us into emotional zombies? Do we lose some of the experience of things by defining them? Are we driven by sex? Is loneliness a personal failure? Is morality relative? **Crucially, be kind and respectful and generous** in your disagreements; remember how much you personally enjoy someone else proving you wrong before celebrating your cutting counterexamples.
Sunday Ethiopian Coffee Morning @Addis Stories
Sunday Ethiopian Coffee Morning @Addis Stories
This Weekend Morning Coffee Meeting - Sunday Edition - will take place at Addies Stories, an Ethiopian Café with traditional Ethiopian coffee. 🗓 **Sunday, 22 February** ⏰ **from 10:30** 👥 **limited to 22 people - registration is obligatory** **This is an extract from the BUZZ from January 2026:** "Ethiopia is the country most often associated with coffee. Arabica grows in the wild, coffee is roasted at home and the coffee ceremony determines the rhythm of social life. The fact that coffee is so deeply anchored gives an extra dimension to the opening of Addis Stories, a place where it is more about real coffee than about fashion trends and trendy specialties." **https://www.bruzz.be/select/resto-bar/bij-addis-stories-draait-alles-om-pure-ethiopische-koffie-en-traditie-2026-01-24** **https://www.addisstories.com/** **Address:** **Addis Stories** **Rue du Vieux Marché 48** **1000 Brussels** This is one of our Sunday editions, which are usually meant to test new places outside our usual coffee locations. These editions are smaller and more experimental, and focus as much on the place and the neighbourhood as on the group itself. ### ### IMPORTANT Please **do not register if you are unsure you can come**. If you register and later realise you can’t make it, **cancel as soon as possible, latest on Saturday afternoon.** There is often a **waiting list**, and it’s only fair to give people on it a real chance to join. Thank you for being fair and respectful. If you’re **on the waiting list**, please **check your status on Saturday evening at the latest**. See you on Sunday ☕
Narrative Knowledge and the Paradox of Philosophy
Narrative Knowledge and the Paradox of Philosophy
General theme: Narrative Knowledge What are the consequences of our relying on narratives as a means to knowing, understanding and relating to the world? What are the advantages and disadvantages of our using narratives as a fundamental way to communicate with one another? Have our interactions and interrelationships in general become captivated (literally) by an excessive dominance of narratives? Just as walking upright has enhanced our ability to navigate our physical world, so has communicating via language enhanced our ability to navigate our social as well as introspective worlds. Dirt paths and asphalt roads we have created during our long process of walking upright have at the same time ultimately determined how we now currently interact with our physical landscapes - closed loops, literally and figuratively. Have all our inherited created narratives also closed-looped our minds, rigidly structuring how we relate to our own selves and to others? Is a key to cultural progress and evolution simply to add many new narratives, all expressing divergent perspectives? Or would de-narrating both our inner and outer worlds be an equally - possibly even more - valuable strategy? With what could we replace narratives if we still wanted/needed to connect and interact with ourselves, with others and with the world? Special theme: The Paradox of Philosophy Are there better ways to arrive at insight, understanding and meaning than by thinking philosophically? What we might call a "philosopher's paradox": 1.Philosophizing essentially demands optimizing our thinking (reasoning, conceptualizing, imagining...) as well as our overall awareness (of here, of now, of others, of self...). 2.Thinking typically diminishes awareness, and vice-versa. 3a. Western philosophy tends to prioritize thinking (abstract) over awareness (concrete). 3b. Much of western philosophy (even Phenomenology!) is consequently narrative in form. Conclusion: Optimizing our thinking necessitates ridding of (or at least suspending) our awareness. Nevertheless, awareness remains a valuable vehicle for attaining knowledge and insight. Is this "philosopher's paradox" simply an intellectual bug? Or is it a fundamental - arguably problematic - feature of our thinking that impedes us from knowing and experiencing anything most directly and fully? What better ways are there in any case to understand the nature of ourselves, our world and our existence than through thinking and philosophy?? Is a dog or rabbit more in touch with being and reality than a human? "Between your thoughts, it's the space that listens." Elias Amidon, from "Medicine Beauty" Illustration: "Socrates, Plato, Aristotle & the Buddhist monks" (concept by Alan Woo, executed by ChatGPT)

Philosophy of Friendship: What are the bases of "friendship"?
Philosophy of Friendship: What are the bases of "friendship"?
As you may or may not know--I didn't until late last year--Aristotle wrote extensively on "friendship" in the Nicomachean Ethics. After 69 years the concept of friendship still creates questions and uncertainty. I had close friends in high school and for a few years after high school but our interests diverged and people moved all over the country so it was hard to maintain connections. * So if I/you haven't talked with a friend for several years, are you still friends? Are we friends who meet at Drunken Philosophy or Omnipresent Atheists? * Can you be friends with someone with whom you have virulently divergent political views? Sartre and Camus could not. * Aristotle regarded friendship as essential to a good life, not merely an added "bonus." Do you agree? * In the Nicomachean Ethics (Books VIII and IX), he claims that wealth and power are meaningless without friends. Trump has wealth and power but seems to have no real friends, but wealth and power seem meaningful to him in perverted ways. Can you have meaning in your life without friends? * Do men and women view and maintain friendships in different ways? * Aristotle categorizes friendship into three types, based on what forms the bond: * **Utility**: Based on mutual benefit, but this type is fragile and ends when the usefulness ceases. * **Pleasure**: Based on shared enjoyment (e.g., humor, hobbies). Common among youth but fades as interests change. * **Virtue (The "Complete" Friendship)**: Based on mutual respect for each other's character and goodness. You wish good for the other for their sake, not yours. * **Key Principles of "True" (Virtuous) Friendship:** * **Permanence**: Virtuous friendships last a lifetime whereas those based on utility and pleasure are fleeting. * **Reciprocity**: Requires mutual goodwill; secret or unreciprocated affection does not qualify. * **The "Second Self"**: A true friend is "another self"—their virtue helps you understand and improve yourself. * **Time and Intimacy**: Deep ("complete") friendships are few, built on time and shared experiences. * **Self-Love and Friendship:** * Good friendship starts with being a friend to yourself. * They distinguish shallow egoism (chasing honors) from real self-love (pursuing virtue). * A virtuous person’s pleasant self-company allows them to be a stable, good friend to others. * Aristotle argues that one's social circle ultimately reflects one's character—a view with striking relevance today. Well--the Drunken Philosophy social circle certainly reflects good character!

Spec-Driven Development with GitHub Spec-Kit - Barret Blake
Spec-Driven Development with GitHub Spec-Kit - Barret Blake
**Important time note:** Please plan on arriving between 5:30 and 6:00 as the elevators lock after 6 and you'll need to message us and we'll need to come get you. The building address is 4450 Bridge Park The entrance is 6620 Mooney St, Suite 400 You will need to scan your ID at the door to get a visitor badge. **Abstract** *Spec-Driven Development with GitHub Spec-Kit: From Intent to Implementation* Spec-driven development flips the traditional workflow on its head: instead of code being the source of truth, the specification becomes the backbone of design, collaboration, and delivery. In this session, we’ll explore how GitHub Spec-Kit enables teams to treat specifications as first-class artifacts—living documents that drive architecture, implementation, and verification. You’ll learn how Spec-Kit helps teams clearly express intent using structured, version-controlled specs that live alongside code. We’ll walk through a practical workflow that starts with defining system behavior and constraints, then progressively refines those specs into testable, automatable outcomes. Along the way, we’ll show how specs can reduce ambiguity, improve cross-functional collaboration, and make design decisions explicit before a single line of production code is written. This talk will cover: --What spec-driven development is (and what it isn’t) --How GitHub Spec-Kit fits into modern developer workflows --Using specs to align product, engineering, and AI-assisted development --Real-world examples of turning specs into implementations with confidence Whether you’re building greenfield systems, integrating AI into your stack, or trying to reduce costly rework, spec-driven development offers a scalable way to move faster without sacrificing clarity. Attendees will leave with concrete patterns and a clear mental model for adopting GitHub Spec-Kit in their own projects. **YouTube Link** TBA
