In person meetup to critique work submitted by members.
In person meetup to critique work submitted by members.
This is a live session at The Mitre in Greenwich. The purpose of this meeting is to provide and receive critique on submitted extracts of members' creative writing, whether they're working on a novel, screenplay, poetry, a memoir or short story, etc. We share our extracts via email ahead of the meeting to give us all a chance to read the work in our own time and reflect upon it so as to be able to provide useful critique. If you want to submit an extract mail me at gpatrick66@hotmail.com to book a slot. If you are new to the group we ask that you participate in at least two of the Wednesday critiquing sessions before you submit work for review so that you get to know us and have a good understanding of how we operate. This will help you to get the most from a critique of your own work. Extracts should be approx 3,000 words and the full document (extract plus blurbs, questions etc) should not exceed 3,500 words in total. Extracts must be mailed to me (gpatrick66@hotmail.com) at the latest by 9pm on the Saturday before the session so that I can share your work with the rest of the group. We have a limit of 4 extracts per session to give adequate time to review work properly. Feel free to give guidance on any specific areas on which you would like feedback. E.g. Plot, pacing, structure or character development etc. (If you have not received the extracts by the Sunday before the session, mail me.) The group is friendly and relaxed, so please don't feel nervous about sharing your work! We will normally review extracts according to the order in which they are sent to me but if you need a particular slot let me know when you submit your extract and we will try to accommodate that. Please note that all phones MUST be switched to silent mode for the duration of the meeting.

Intellectual Discussion Night: Signs of Southwark – What Our Streets Reveal
Intellectual Discussion Night: Signs of Southwark – What Our Streets Reveal
Southwark Culture & Intellectual Discussion: Urban History Street name plates are more than just practical markers; they are fragments of London’s living history. Each plate captures a moment in time: the typography, the materials, and even the placement tell stories about the communities that named the streets and the councils that governed them. This evening, we turn our attention to Southwark, one of London’s oldest and most characterful boroughs. From the medieval lanes of Bankside to the grand 19th-century developments of Bermondsey and Camberwell, Southwark’s street signs reveal the borough’s layered past: its industries, its reformers, its changing boundaries, and its shifting sense of identity. Our guest speaker Simon Morris, publications secretary of the London Topographical Society, has cycled more than 3,000 miles around London documenting historic street name plates before they vanish through redevelopment or neglect. His meticulous photographic record captures everything from ornate Victorian cast ironwork to the distinctive red and black enamel plates of the London County Council era. In this talk, tailored specially for our Intellectual Discussion Night, Simon will share highlights from his research and photography in Southwark, exploring what these small but significant details reveal about the borough’s evolution. Expect fascinating insights into how street names were chosen, how signage reflected civic pride, and how local residents sometimes resisted the changes that reshaped their neighbourhoods. He will also share some of Southwark’s superlatives, including its longest, oldest, strangest, and most puzzling street name plates. After Simon’s talk, we will open the floor for group discussion about the value of urban heritage, local identity, and how we decide what is worth preserving in a city that is constantly rebuilding itself. About the guest speaker: Simon Morris is the publications secretary of the London Topographical Society, specialising in the historic growth, mapping, and organisation of 18th- and 19th-century London. His photographic archive documents thousands of name plates across the city, offering a unique window into London’s visual and civic history. VERY LIMITED SPACES AVAILABLE SO PLEASE RSVP EARLY! \*\*\*Location: Address sent by PM It's a 1 minute walk from Borough tube station or an 8 minute walk from London Bridge station. \*\*\*Reminder: RSVP is mandatory to attend. Light refreshments included for this one but BYOB if you want something special. \*\*\*Please Note: The address will be sent directly via private message on Meetup to those approved to join discussion night. Please have your notifications turned on for private messages.

*Your Thoughts Pls* Weekday Afternoon Workshops (Old Street)
*Your Thoughts Pls* Weekday Afternoon Workshops (Old Street)
**Weekday afternoon workshop, anyone?** The wonderful team at Shoreditch Town Hall have a café space where they're inviting creative groups like ours to hold sessions. It is such a lovely room that I hope to run an afternoon workshop from 12-3pm on a Thursday or Friday once a month. If I did so, would you attend...? How many of you would be free to meet on a weekday afternoon is a guess so I'm putting this up to gather the level of interest. **If you would be interested in an afternoon workshop during the week, could you RSVP 'yes' to this session to show your interest?** The date is tentative for now. Once I see the level of interest I'll scrap the idea OR confirm a first session. Could you RSVP by Jan 30th if this would be of interest. **If possible, could you post a comment on this page as to which day would be best in your opinion out of Thursday or Friday or none of those?** I'm thinking later in the week is better but I'd love to read your thoughts. If you have other thoughts about the timing, location, format etc, please feel free to add that to your comment about your day preference. I expect these groups would be smaller with perhaps 6-12 people but prove me wrong. Thanks all! It is not easy planning events and feel as though sometimes you are guessing at what people really want to attend.

RESCHEDULED: Write-in at the Mitre: work on your own material in company
Apologies – this event has been rescheduled from 14th due to room booking issues. **We will be at The Mitre pub in central Greenwich.** This meetup is free and casual. We just sit around for a few hours and write together. Bring a laptop, or use a pen and paper or clay tablet and stylus if that's what works for you. The structure of the session is roughly: 2pm: chat 2:20–3:25: writing time 3:25: chat/coffee break 3:40–4:45 writing time 4:45: chat But our Saturdays are very casual, so feel free to drop in and out. **Our Saturday sessions sometimes rotate location. We're going to stick with the Mitre for now, but do check the location of the specific meetup before signing up. If you arrive later, you may need to ask the bar staff to show you through to the room.**

She specialises in designing human-centred AI systems that balance trust, delight, and user agency. Alongside her industry work, Micaela is the founder of The AI UX School, where she teaches designers how to confidently design, prototype, and think critically about AI products. Her work sits at the intersection of UX, AI, growth ethics, and product strategy. **————————** **About the Talk:** **————————** **Building Trust and Encouraging Critical Thinking: Designing AI Experiences That Do Both** In this talk, Micaela explores how teams can intentionally build AI experiences that create trust without encouraging blind reliance. Through real product examples and practical UX patterns, she shows how interaction design, language, feedback loops, and system transparency can help users stay engaged, informed, and thoughtful when working with AI. ***The session reframes trust not as “users believing the system,” but as users feeling supported, capable, and in control.*** **———————** **SPEAKER 2** **———————** **Erin Casali** Erin is a VP/Director of both product and design, with over 10 years of experience in each. She has a hybrid approach with design, product, and engineering in her background, and a skillset including psychology and change management. Driven by a passion for improving lives through her work, she empowers teams to reach their full potential. She advocates for purpose, transparency, and diversity, fostering a culture of trust and agency. **————————** **About the Talk:** **————————** **Engaging with genAI Beyond the Hype** The world of genAI is split between doomers and boomers (the other kind), where it can be really hard to distinguish between what’s useful and what’s not. According to one side, everything is amazing and our jobs are going to disappear soon. According to the other, genAI is evil and needs to be resisted at all costs. ***This talk will provide pragmatic tools to navigate the world of hype between the two sides, and define how to gain valuable skills.*** **———————** **SPEAKER 3** **———————** **Chris Compston** Chris is a London-based product coach who has led product operations for brands like Bumble, Farfetch and Reward Gateway. He specialises in designing Product Operating Models that drive organisation toward impact. A prolific speaker and writer, Chris focuses on how intentional, repeatable practices help modern product teams thrive. **————————** **About the Talk:** **————————** **How to Woo** How do you steer the ship when you aren't the captain? In product development, your success rarely depends on your ability to give orders. Instead, it relies on your ability to influence people that you have no direct power over. We often call this stakeholder management, but in reality, it is the art of the "Woo". An approachable, human way of winning people over to your side. In this talk, we will explore why the hard sell often leads to friction and how you can shift from pushing requirements to pulling people toward a shared vision. Drawing on real-world successes and failures from Bumble, Farfetch, and Reward Gateway, we’ll look at how to navigate conflicting interests and complex personalities. ***You will learn a practical approach to understanding hidden motivations, shaping the narrative around your ideas, and ultimately empowering others to feel they are making the right choice for themselves. The goal isn't just to get a yes. It is to build a partnership where everyone feels they’ve won.*** **—————————————** **Support from:** **—————————————** We are kindly hosted by our friends at Accurx. **——————————** **About your hosts:** **——————————** Product Unleashed is brought to you by your hosts **[John Griffin](https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-griffin-designer/)** and **[Dominic Port](https://www.linkedin.com/in/dominic-port/)**. The duo has worked on the design of products of all shapes and sizes and bring their energy and enthusiasm to this unique meet-up, packed with great guests and knowledge - for anyone interested in levelling up their game in the world of products.

Writing group meeting on the Upper East Side
Writing group meeting on the Upper East Side
UPDATE!!! This meeting was originally scheduled for Crown Heights, but due to unforeseen circumstances, we're changing venues! The new location will on the Upper East Side at the home of a regular member named Ben. Sorry about this inconvenience. I hope everyone can still make it, but if not, no worries -- just change your RSVP because that'll be super helpful for planning/waitlist purposes. The night before we meet, I'll email all the details to people who are on the RSVP list, but for now, here are three important things to know: (1) There'll be a full hour to hang at the start before quiet writing time. (2) Ben has two cats. (3) There are a few steps to get into the building, and there's an elevator. If you need a ramp, get in touch and we'll make sure it's available for you. That's it for now. See you there! -Z

In-person writing night at Nook!
In-person writing night at Nook!
At this in-person writing meetup, we will meet at Nook in Bushwick (45 Irving Ave Brooklyn, NY 11237). During this event, we will spend the first hour-ish writing, and the second hour sharing our work, giving spontaneous feedback on what we hear, and socializing. Bring a computer or pen/pencil and notebook--whatever you like to write with! Note that table space may be slightly limited. If you have a writing project/practice that you'd like to bring in to work on, please do. If you don't, that's great too! We will provide a few prompts and exercises to get things started. Writers are encouraged but not required to share some of their work after the writing portion of the session. We will give brief reactions to pieces including favorite lines/phrases, questions, what the piece reminded us of, and feelings/mood we took away. This will not be a full-on critique session, but a low-pressure opportunity to share and discuss our writing!
