Mary Cassatt at the National Gallery of Art
Mary Cassatt is one of America's greatest female painters, and she painted women in a time of turbulent change. Sometimes, a painting of a mother with a child is also a painting of a suffragette! Join us at the National Gallery to take a deeper look at 40 of Cassatt's works, including some rarely shown. The East Building's library also features a display of photos, letters, and other artifacts from the artist's life and work. After the art, we'll meet in the cafeteria for gelato and socializing.
MEET AT: Just outside the National Gallery's West Building main entrance (facing the National Mall). The West Building is the one with the big columns and stairs out front. Look for Molly with the rainbow LAL sign.
NEAREST METRO STOPS: Smithsonian and Archives/Navy Memorial
COST: FREE
THE ART: Mary Cassattâs art and life reflect an independent spirit that defied expectations for women in her time. Explore three galleries in the National Galleryâs impressionist collection to look closely at how she worked. Some 40 paintings, drawings, and printsâlargely drawn from our rich holdings of her workâshow an artist shaped by tradition yet radically modern.

Profs & Pints Northern Virginia: Lafayetteâs Long Fight for Liberty
[Profs and Pints Northern Virginia](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **âLafayetteâs Long Fight for Liberty,â** a look at the life, struggles, and legacy of Americaâs favorite fighting Frenchman, with Richard Bell, professor of history at the University of Maryland and author of *The American Revolution and the Fate of the World.*
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/nv-lafayette](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/nv-lafayette) .]
When the Marquis de Lafayette returned to the United States in 1824, Americans greeted him with a frenzy of affection unmatched by anything the nation had ever shown a single individual. Crowds filled streets, towns held ceremonies in his honor, Congress showered him with gifts, and parents named children for the French aristocrat who had helped win the American Revolution.
Explore the extraordinary life behind that adulation with historian Richard Bell, whose excellent past talks have earned him a big following among Profs and Pints fans.
Professor Bell will take Lafayette far beyond his familiar role as George Washingtonâs young protĂŠgĂŠ and the hero of Yorktown.
Youâll learn how Lafayette became one of the Atlantic worldâs most persistent champions of libertyâfighting for constitutional government, religious freedom, prison reform, press freedom, antislavery, and independence movements from Greece to Poland.
Youâll also hear how Lafayetteâs ideals repeatedly put him in danger, making him a target of kings, radicals, imperial powers, and revolutionaries who regarded him as âthe most dangerous man of all.â
Professor Bell will show how Lafayetteâs life was full of contradictions: a nobleman who challenged aristocratic privilege, a centrist caught between monarchy and mob rule, an antislavery advocate whose efforts fell short, and a dreamer whose causes often failed in his lifetime. Yet Lafayette never stopped trying to make liberty universal.
Come learn why Lafayetteâs name still graces hundreds of American towns, parks, counties, schools, rivers, and lakesâand why his most important monument might be not any statue or place name, but the freedoms he helped generations of people imagine, demand, and defend. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.)

The Devil In The White City Book Discussion
For our second meeting letâs read The Devil In The White City by Erik Larson.
Synopsis:
Author Erik Larson imbues the incredible events surrounding the 1893 Chicago World's Fair with such drama that readers may find themselves checking the book's categorization to be sure that 'The Devil in the White City' is not, in fact, a highly imaginative novel. Larson tells the stories of two men: Daniel H. Burnham, the architect responsible for the fair's construction, and H.H. Holmes, a serial killer masquerading as a charming doctor.
Burnham's challenge was immense. In a short period of time, he was forced to overcome the death of his partner and numerous other obstacles to construct the famous "White City" around which the fair was built. His efforts to complete the project, and the fair's incredible success, are skillfully related along with entertaining appearances by such notables as Buffalo Bill Cody, Susan B. Anthony, and Thomas Edison.
The activities of the sinister Dr. Holmes, who is believed to be responsible for scores of murders around the time of the fair, are equally remarkable. He devised and erected the World's Fair Hotel, complete with crematorium and gas chamber, near the fairgrounds and used the event as well as his own charismatic personality to lure victims.
Combining the stories of an architect and a killer in one book, mostly in alternating chapters, seems like an odd choice but it works. The magical appeal and horrifying dark side of 19th-century Chicago are both revealed through Larson's skillful writing. - John Moe

Meaningful Conversation and Coffee - Northside Social Falls Church
**Join us in Falls Church for conversations that go beyond small talk.**
Higher Grounds â Falls Church is where this growing network of gatherings began: a space for thoughtful, authentic dialogue about what matters most. Whether weâre exploring the nature of happiness, the challenges and possibilities of midlife, spirituality, culture, capitalism, parenting, or the role of art and travel in a meaningful life, every conversation is shaped by the people in the room.
Thereâs no set leader or rigid agendaâjust a shared commitment to listen as much as we speak. We start with brief introductions focused on what makes you *you* (not your LinkedIn bio), then dive straight into whatever is on peopleâs minds. The direction of each meetup emerges organically, making every event unique.
MANDATORY: PLEASE REVIEW OUR COMMUNITY GUIDELINES IN THE GROUP DESCRIPTION. Everyone is expected to engage in respectful conversations and listen deeply as well as share. We have a zero tolerance policy of sexual harassment and hate speech.
Come ready to share, reflect, and connect with others in Falls Church who are also seeking deeper conversations.

Join the Columbus AI community for a special event.
**Battle of the Personal Agents** is your chance to see what people are actually building with AI agents and personal automation systems. Whether youâre running OpenClaw, Hermes, or a completely custom solution, bring your agent and show the community how it works.
Weâre interested in real-world implementations: the problems your agent solves, how you use it day-to-day, how itâs hosted and managed, how you built it, and why youâve chosen to keep using it. Live demonstrations are encouraged, so be prepared to show your code, architecture, workflows, and your agent performing real tasks.
This is less about polished presentations and more about sharing practical experience, comparing approaches, and learning from one another. If youâd like to present, please contact Chris Slee (via meetup) before the event so we can allocate enough time for everyoneâs demonstrations.
Come ready to show what youâve built, discover what others are doing, and maybe find a few ideas worth taking home.

Candle Making Night at The Arcane Foundry | Design Your Own Custom Candle
## Candle Making Night at The Arcane Foundry \| Design Your Own Custom Candle
**SPECIAL PROMOTION**: Buy 3 and get 1 Free!
Step into The Arcane Foundry and create your own custom candle from start to finish. This is a laid back, hands-on experience where **youâll blend fragrances, choose your vessel, and pour your own candle using 100% soy wax**. Whether youâre coming solo or with friends, itâs designed to be simple, creative, and a good time.
Weâll walk you through the entire process, from picking your scents to choosing between a traditional cotton wick or a crackling wood wick. You can go with one fragrance or mix your own blend to create something completely unique**. No experience needed**, just show up and weâll handle the rest.
While your candle sets, feel free to hang out, play a game, explore the shop, or just relax and talk. Drinks and snacks are available, and the atmosphere leans into the **fantasy**, **dark academia**, and **gothic horror** vibe The Arcane Foundry is known for.
