D.C. United is professional soccer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_football) club based in Washington, D.C. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington,_D.C.) which competes in Major League Soccer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_League_Soccer) (MLS). It is one of the ten charter clubs of MLS, having competed in the league since its inception, in 1996 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996_Major_League_Soccer_season).
D.C. United has won 13 international and domestic titles or honors over the club's history (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_D.C._United). D.C. United was one of the most successful (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_League_Soccer_records_and_statistics#All-Time_Most_Successful_MLS_Clubs) clubs in the early years of MLS, winning 8 of its 13 titles between 1996 and 1998 under head coach Bruce Arena (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Arena). United holds an MLS record for most MLS Cup (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MLS_Cup) and Supporters' Shields (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supporters%27_Shield) apiece, winning each honor four times, and has won the U.S. Open Cup (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamar_Hunt_U.S._Open_Cup) three times. United was also the first club to win both the MLS Cup and MLS Supporters' Shield consecutively.
On the international stage, D.C. United has competed in both the CONCACAF Champions League (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CONCACAF_Champions_League) and its predecessor, the CONCACAF Champions' Cup. Thursday at the Portrait gallery
Come Craft with us. Don't let the lack of RSVPs stop you, they aren't required, nor is membership to our group. Bring your project and join a boisterous group of crafters in the Kogod Courtyard of the Smithsonian Portrait Gallery - American Art Museum. This glass roofed space is climate controlled and has the most beautiful light for crafting. (If there's an event in Courtyard head over to the MLK library Cafe.)
Books and Chill
Everyoneâs heard of book clubs where the group reads the same thing and gets together to discuss, which is great⊠if you have time and interest in whateverâs chosen. This is a different type of book club where you bring whatever youâre currently or recently reading (or just a book youâre super excited about) and talk about it with fellow book lovers.
Weâll start with people arriving/ordering food between 615-645, then go around and introduce ourselveslves and give a very brief synopsis of what weâre reading and why weâre excited (or not!) about it. Then devolve into informal conversations until people need to head out.
The goal Is to create community and connections in a group of strangers - to facilitate this please make sure you have at least a clear first name on your profile.
Upside on Moore has a great selection of food you can order from your phone or at the kiosks. Thereâs also a bar with happy hour, something for everyone!
Arrival tips: if youâre taking the metro, itâs the building above the Rosslyn exit. If youâre driving, you can park in the public lot under the food hall (entrance from the one way bus street) and validate parking after 6!

Nature's God: The Heretical Origins of the American Republic, cont'd
This will be our second (and possibly last) meeting on *Nature's God: The Heretical Origins of the American Republic*, by Matthew Stewart. For this meeting, please try to read chapters 4 and 6. (You can skim chapter 5, which is particularly confusing).
**Where did the ideas come from that became the cornerstone of American democracy?**
Americaâs founders intended to liberate us not just from one king but from the ghostly tyranny of supernatural religion. Drawing deeply on the study of European philosophy, Matthew Stewart brilliantly tracks the ancient, pagan, and continental ideas from which Americaâs revolutionaries drew their inspiration. In the writings of Spinoza, Lucretius, and other great philosophers, Stewart recovers the true meanings of âNatureâs God,â âthe pursuit of happiness,â and the radical political theory with which the American experiment in self-government began.
[LINK](https://a.co/d/bkTWJNb)
This book is not always an easy read. You may want to make use of AI tools such as ChatGPT. You can ask it questions like:
"What does Matthew Stewart say about happiness in his book Nature's God?" OR:
What does Matthew Stewart say about Spinoza?
This may be our last meeting on this book. If you want to have a third meeting later, on the last two chapters, let me know.
I hope to see you there!

Distribution Event - Atheists Helping the Homeless
**Looking to**
\- Help out neighbors in the DC area?
\- Support a secular charity?
\- Connect with other atheists and humanists?
Join Atheists Helping the Homeless DC at our monthly distribution event!
Atheists Helping the Homeless is a 501(c)(3) charity that distributes items like backpacks, socks, gloves, and toiletries to people in need throughout the Washington, DC region.
We meet up on the second Saturday of every month outside of a homeless shelter in Silver Spring, MD, called Progress Place, and pass out whatever items we have to whoever is there. Each month we serve between 60 - 100 people. Afterwards, we usually go out for breakfast.
Our goal is to provide a way for people to help each other without affiliating with a religion. Our method is to go straight to those in need, and create a welcoming and fun atmosphere to effectively create an environment where secular community can grow and thrive.
If this sounds fun, see you there!
Education as an Act of Hope - Constructive Response to Suppression
Please join us for our next **Friday gathering** on **April 10, 2026** for an evening of warm fellowship and insightful discussion.
We'll start at **7:00 pm** with **refreshments** at the **Alexandria BahĂĄâĂ Center**. The discussion will begin at 7:30 p.m.
**Education as an Act of Hope - Constructive Response to Suppression.**
This is a story about what happens when ordinary people respond to injustice not with despair, but with determination to build something better.
Join us for an inspiring evening with **Kamran Farid**, co-founder of the BahĂĄ'Ă Institute for Higher Education (BIHE), as he shares a powerful story of resilience, courage, and hope.
**About the Discussion:**
In 1987, when BahĂĄ'Ă students and professors were expelled from all Iranian universities simply because of their faith, a group of educators made a bold choice: they would create their own university. For nearly four decades, BIHE has operated underground in Iran, offering degree programs to students denied the fundamental right to education.
Kamran will explore a compelling question: *How does access to education sustain hope in communities facing systematic oppressionâand what happens when that access is denied?*
**About Our Speaker:**
Kamran Farid holds degrees in electronics and communication engineering. As a BIHE faculty member and administrator, he was arrested in 2011 and imprisoned for five yearsâhis "crime" was teaching. Since his release in 2016, he continues to support BIHE's mission as a consultant, ensuring new generations can pursue their dreams of higher education despite ongoing persecution.
**All are welcome.** No background knowledge requiredâjust bring your curiosity and an open heart.

As we learn, we hope to connect more with the Deaf community in Central Ohio. Join us as you're able!
Come regularly or just once - whatever you're looking for! Each meetup will explore different topics related to ASL/Deaf culture, and will feature time to practice conversation with one another. Just bring yourself and a willingness to learn!
Sunday Brunch
Sleep in on Sundays. When you've had your fill of pajama-time, roll out and have some tasty brunch with your fellow Humanists!
Humanist Program
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event.
We will be hearing from Becca Powell, Director of Advocacy and Outreach at Unchained At Last, an organization whose mission is dedication to ending forced and child marriage in the United States through direct services and systems change. Unchained At Last's mission clearly meshes and addresses several of our Humanist Ten Commitments. Becca will educate us about an issue many of us may not be familiar with--but should be.
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online

COUNT monthly event: Kitchen service at Van Buren Center's shelter
Come assist Van Buren Shelter (https://ymcacolumbus.org/locations/vanburen) staff in serving dinners and cleaning up on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Dinner for the women is 5-6 pm and for the families is 6:15-7:15 pm. There is ample free parking available in the shelter's lot. The recommended area to park is in green in the image above.
There will be a new entrance for the time being. We are asking all volunteers to enter through the Donation Dock door, the orange mark on the image above. This door is located between the Single Adults and Family Shelter. You will see 2 large garage doors with a large green trash compactor in the center. Please head to the closest garage door to the building wall, with a ramp leading up. There, you will see a door with a sign stating instructions on how to enter the building. Please ring the doorbell, and a staff member will come and escort you into the building. If a staff member takes longer than 5 minutes, please call the front desk at 614-689-2020. This is a new process for us, and we do not want to keep you waiting! We appreciate your patience as we navigate this temporary change.
The shelter needs a volunteer count the day before the event so sign-up ends Monday at 4:50 PM. Afterwards some of us go to the Omnipresent Atheists Weekly Meetup in progress to have a bit to eat or drink (http://www.meetup.com/omnipresentatheists/).
Volunteers must be 14 or older. Since we will be working around families, the YMCA does not permit volunteering by individuals with convictions for violent or sexual crimes. The YMCA reserves the right to run background checks on volunteers.
For questions, comment on this page or contact: Andrew, awhit12@yahoo.com, (614)937-5802 (cell). Please let Andrew know if you volunteer anytime other than our COUNT events so that he can count your hours toward our service record.
Board games at The Forge
The Forge does have a full bar and kitchen. There is no cover charge but they do request all attendees to purchase a minimum of ~$20 per person. Soft drink refills are $1 each. Please support our hosts so we can continue to provide great events for the group!
The Forge has a large library of games available for us to enjoy. Hosts and regulars will also provide numerous popular games but please bring any games you would like to teach and/or play.
Doors open at 6, and we expect gaming to be rolling by around 630. Please promptly end your games and clear out the space at 10pm when the bar closes.
We encourage socializing but do not permit disruptive behavior of any kind. Thank you for your continued commitment to providing a fun and welcoming space to veteran, newbie, and rookie gamers in the Columbus area.
Parking can be challenging. There is a parking lot behind the neighboring Mexican restaurant that is free and easy to walk from but it's a bit hidden.
Omnipresent Atheists Weekly Meetup (2nd Tues)
Jimmy V's Grill & Pub in Grandview Heights. You are responsible for your own meal/drinks. We usually don't have any agenda other than eat, drink and talk. :) If the weather is nice we will be on the back patio, otherwise we are in the cigar room.
This group has been meeting every Tuesday evening for over a decade. Many attendees do not RSVP on meetup. Please don't let the small number here discourage you. Anyone/everyone is welcome to come. We'd love to have you join us.
COTA bus #5 comes to W. 5th and Wyandotte Rd. And it's a minute walk to the restaurant.
