Meetup for French and English conversationalists of a "certain age."
Our meet-up group meets once a week. We are English and French speakers of a "certain age" (over 50), and we meet to talk about everything and nothing. The goal is to offer each of us the chance to practice whichever language he/she is learning, or just to have a conversation in either language with a friendly group in a relaxing atmosphere.
Our guidelines are to have fun and to be respectful of different points of view and personal backgrounds. Insulting or disparaging other members because of their personal background is not permitted.
Our meet-up ends promptly at 6pm. If you wish to remain after 6 pm, please move to a different section of the café so it is clear to management that the meet-up has ended.
Please buy at least a drink to support the café. If you arrive late, you can order at the bar and they will bring your order to you.
Paris Café Philo – LIVE ! Monthly Meeting (in English)
This is our monthly Paris Café Philo, held in person and in English. The group has been meeting since 1997.
On the first Wednesday of each month we meet at the famous **Café de Flore**, 172 Boulevard Saint-Germain, 75006 Paris – first floor.
In addition, EVERY WEDNESDAY we have ONLINE meetings via ZOOM. Please check the relevant events listed on our Meetup group: [https://www.meetup.com/english-cafe-philo-in-paris/](https://www.meetup.com/english-cafe-philo-in-paris/)
***
**What is a Café Philo?**
Participants propose topics, we choose one together, and then discuss it in an open yet orderly way. But what counts as a topic?
A topic can be a question about the meaning of life, our relationship to the world we live in, the difference between good and evil, how we distinguish truth from falsehood, reality from illusion, or beauty from its absence. There are many such deep questions that philosophers, scientists, and writers have grappled with throughout history.
If you are interested in exploring these or other questions, we invite you to join our philosophical café – a gathering where you can express your ideas, share your knowledge, and perhaps discover something new.
Our discussions are serious and rigorous, yet often enjoyable.
No background in philosophy or the humanities is required. If you do have one, you are of course very welcome.
***
**Format**
A moderator guides the discussion, ensuring that every participant has the opportunity to contribute in a welcoming environment. No one is obliged to speak. Maximum number of participants: 30.
This is **not** a lecture. It is an exchange of ideas in which your questions and perspectives are genuinely valued. The tone is respectful; views that are contemptuous of human dignity will not be entertained.
***
**Who Can Attend**
Everyone, regardless of background or level of philosophical knowledge – from seasoned philosophers to anyone simply curious about life's big questions.
***
**Cost**
Participation is free. Contributions are welcome.

Welcome!

Poetry Reading: Gentle Words & Deep Ideas 📖🫖🍪✨
**Welcome to the Paris Poetry Circle!**
Now in its 30th year, our English-language poetry reading group continues to bring together lovers of verse and thought in the heart of Paris. 🎉
Join us this Wednesday evening for a gathering of minds and voices as we read and reflect on poems that move, challenge, and illuminate — all shared over a quiet cup of tea and biscuits. 🫖☕️🍪
We seek poems that are clear yet profound, sweet or serious — those that carry us forward and help us make sense of the world. We steer clear of the obscure or needlessly complex; we value clarity over cleverness, sincerity over show.
Each poem is read anonymously to begin with, without revealing the author, allowing space for open, unbiased interpretation. We then explore it together — carefully, curiously — to uncover what lies beneath the surface.
After the meeting, we write a letter of thanks to the living poets we have read at the group, to thank and congratulate them. We revere all the poets of this world.
The group is small — usually six or seven thoughtful individuals, up to a maximum of ten. The conversation is warm, intelligent, and grounded. There is no performance, no pressure to contribute, and no cost. Only a shared pursuit of insight, beauty, and fellowship.
If that resonates with you, we’d love to welcome you. Bring a poem, or simply bring yourself. 📚✨

Practical Philosophy Meetup - Paris 🇫🇷
Oui, on encourage même ça ! :)

**The history of French queer cinema is rich and diverse. During June 2026 in Paris—Pride Month—Lost in Frenchlation presents a series of films dedicated to French queer culture and lives. The series showcases a range of films from leading queer French-speaking filmmakers. Time-honored filmmakers such as Céline Sciamma, Christophe Honoré, Alain Guiraudie, Robin Campbillo, Julia Ducournau and Xavier Dolan are included in the program along with a new generation of French queer filmmakers such as Anna Cazenave Cambet and Hafsia Herzi. Through dramas and comedies, their films explore lesbian relationships, trans lives, “coming-out,” AIDS, and the pleasures of being queer.**

Pop-up Book Club 4: Going to Meet The Man, stories by James Baldwin
Let’s meet and share discussion of the James Baldwin short story collection, Going to Meet The Man.
Drunken Philosophy: Are you really who you think you are? What is the "self"?
I have been studying the question of "self" online with Prof. Ellie Anderson and so I thought a prompt on the "self" might be interesting. Full confession: I had Claude create this prompt and I like it, so here goes:
Imagine a thought experiment that merges two classic puzzles:
> You undergo a procedure, performed neuron by neuron, in which every biological component of your brain is replaced with a functionally identical synthetic substitute. At each step, your behavior, memories, and personality remain unchanged. When the last neuron is swapped, is the consciousness experiencing the world still you? And — more pressingly — was there ever a continuous "you" to begin with?
### Questions to Wrestle With
* If consciousness is purely physical, does the *gradual* nature of the replacement matter, or is it equivalent to being destroyed and rebuilt?
* Could there be a "self" without continuity of experience — even moment to moment, while you sleep?
On a more practical level, consider the simpler case first: **hemispherectomy** patients — people who have had an entire cerebral hemisphere surgically removed — often retain a strong sense of personal identity and continuity. This suggests "you" are not rigidly tied to specific physical material. But does that vindicate the synthetic neuron case, or merely show that identity is more *flexible* than we thought — not that it can survive *complete* substrate replacement?
I used Claude so I could get this out today and let everyone have some time to consider it. Hope to see you at the Oracle. Sorry about the location change two weeks ago. That's what I get for trusting local weather predictions!

Feel Good Friday: POWER BALLAD at the Gateway Film Center + SHAKE NO. 8!
Join us as we get together to see Paul Rudd in the latest comedy-drama-musical from John Carney, POWER BALLAD! The film follows a washed-up wedding singer, a fading boy band singer and a stolen hit song. Here’s a description, trailer and plan for this event:
DESCRIPTION: Rick, a washed-up wedding singer, and Danny, a fading boy band star, bond over music and a late-night jam session. When Danny turns Rick's song into a hit, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves. Power Ballad is written/directed by John Carney, the master of the modern musical and creative mind behind Once, Begin Again and Sing Street! It stars Paul Rudd, Nick Jonas, Peter McDonald, Marcella Plunkett, Havana Rose Liu and Jack Reynor.
BUZZ & ACCLAIM: The film premiered to rave reviews at this year’s Dublin International Film Festival where critics call it “a sure-fired crowd-pleaser” that “just might be the feel-good hit of the year!” Others say, “Paul Rudd delivers a career-best performance in this charmer” that’s both “hilarious and deeply moving." The film continues John Carney’s “long run of success with yet another charmer” and “a sharp, hopeful crowd-pleaser that strikes the right notes!”

Bondage Photography Demonstration
*Note: this is a demonstration event only, you **will not** shoot you own images. However, if you bring your camera we can test it for compatibility with the studio lights.*
Bondage elements can add an extra layer of emotion and artistry to your images. Sample images on the internet are however dominated by BDSM style shots that are often sexualized and emphasize the model being in distress. In this demonstration Rachel and I show ways to use bondage elements in an artistic way. We explore the types of accessories that work best in artistic images and the best way to photograph them.
Our model is Rachel Adams, an internationally known fetish model with many years of experience in this genre.
Bad Girls Book Club June 2026
**Our June novel is: *The Eights* by Joanna Miller**
**This month’s novel is set during World War I. It’s a 20th-century historical fiction story about friendship and war, with coming-of-age elements and a slightly haunted tone. The book is 384 pages in print and 10 hours and 9 minutes on audiobook.**
Oxford, 1920. For the first time in its one-thousand-year history, Oxford University officially admits female students. Burning with dreams of equality, four young women move into neighboring rooms in Corridor 8. Beatrice, Dora, Marianne, and Otto—collectively known as The Eights—come from all walks of life, each driven by their own motives, each holding tight to their secrets, and are thrown into an unlikely, unshakable friendship.
Dora was never meant to go to university, but, after losing both her brother and her fiancé on the battlefield, has arrived in their place. Politically-minded Beatrice, daughter of a famous suffragette, sees Oxford as a chance to make her own way - and some friends her own age. Otto was a nurse during the war but is excited to return to her socialite lifestyle in Oxford where she hopes to find distraction from the memories that haunt her. And finally Marianne, the quiet, clever daughter of a village pastor, who has a shocking secret she must hide from everyone, even her new friends, if she is to succeed.
Among the historic spires, and in the long shadow of the Great War, the four women must navigate and support one another in a turbulent world in which misogyny is rife, influenza is still a threat, and the ghosts of the Great War don’t always remain dead.
