Full Strawberry Moon in Old Town
This month's full moon is known as a Strawberry Moon because June is when strawberries are usually harvested.
Let's meet at the bike rack across the street from the King Street Metro Station and enjoy a full moon walk in Old Town!
NB: There is a Capital Bikeshare on Cameron St, across the street from the King St Metro, but that's NOT where we are meeting! Come to the Capital Bikeshare in between Joe Theismann's and Embassy Suites on Diagonal St.
❶ **What we'll do:**
* From the bike rack we'll walk south and east to Wilkes St, which we'll follow east through Wilkes St Tunnel to the waterfront. From there we'll walk upstream to the north side of Founder's Park and head west along Oronoco Street to Fairfax Street, walk south along N Fairfax St to King St, and then walk west along King St back to our starting point.
* The walk is a little over 3.5 miles and should take around an hour and a half. The surface is mostly paved throughout and fairly level.

Photograph One A Day (31 Day July Project)
**The rules are simple:**
Take photographs **Each and Every Day,** and post your best **ONE** (1) shot of the day - **EACH DAY** for **July**. If you happen to miss a day or two (life happens), it is **OK** to catch up and upload the photos for the days missed, or just skip those days.
**Please don't post over 2 to 3 at a time**. This is part of the learning process.
**DO NOT POST TO THE ALBUM *UNTIL* AFTER 07/01/2026**.
Please use a browser like Chrome and the Meetup.com website to post the images, as **the Meetup app does not handle albums very well**.
Towards the top-left of the page is a link to **Add Photos** for uploading your photo to the album. **CONFIRM** **that your photo was added to the correct Album.** Remember to post your **best photo (JUST ONE)** you took every day on that day! **DO NOT POST PHOTOS FROM ANY OTHER TIME!** If you have time to post an older image, you can take a new image and post it. Be creative.
Please **add a caption** to know how far you are in the process. After you upload the image you took that day, find your photo at the end of the album, and edit the caption to state the day and total number of days in the month like this:**?/31**. You can add the title of the image if you wish. A good title can make a photo! So, your photo for the **July 1st** caption would be "**1/31: My great photo!**" \*\* Adding a caption helps you keep track of where you are in the month. It does help.
The purpose is to have fun and get in the habit of shooting every day. Learn to use your camera. Read your manual and test out a new feature you have never used before. Sometimes picking a theme/project can help focus (pun intended), like flowers, your pet(s), a lens you haven't used in a while, or whatever your passion is. Or try something new...
The **end date is 07/31/2026**. Meetup.com does not allow events to be longer than 2 weeks.
Other images that were not taken by you will be removed. Please keep the images family-friendly. You need to be a member of the Virginia Beltway Photography Group.

A Poetry Workshop
Hey Poetry Lovers!
This group is on a roll. Here’s the gist:
We meet at the **Capital One Café in Chinatown** from **12pm - 2pm** every other week.
For enrichment, we start by reading and reflecting on a **“published poem”**, suggested by someone in the group. No advance preparation is necessary. If you haven’t used Discord before, take a moment to download it and create an account before arriving. When we meet you on Saturday, we will add you to our server, the “DC Poetry Workshop”, and can help you navigate the app if you have questions.
Finally, if you plan on sharing a poem, consider how you will do so. Some options include:
* Print 5-10 copies to distribute in person
* Take and share screenshots in the Discord chat.
* Copy the poem into a google doc, change sharing settings to “anyone with link”, and copy the google doc link into the Discord chat.

We have a tiny venue and we hit capacity often and early arrival is suggested.
We have the discretion to decide entry.
We will assign tables for represented languages. All languages are welcome! However we don't guarantee the availability of a partner in that particular language, you would like to exchange.
As you all remember well, this event used to bring out hundreds of people every week. However, it was discontinued last year for obvious reasons and we couldn't gather that many people now, because of restrictions. Hence, we are downsizing and caping the number of attendees. We have super limited spots and advance ticket purchase is required.

HOW IT WORKS : We will try to assign tables for each represented languages and will direct attendees to their respective tables accordingly. All languages are welcome! However we don't guarantee the availability of a partner in that particular language, you would like to exchange.
Rules to abide :
1. Event is free and 21+ (bring ID).
2. Be respectful to your counterparts and give them a chance to exchange with others as well.
3. We all are native speakers of one or two languages and be willing to help others and try to accommodate as much as possible.
4. If you don't speak the other person's required language, LEAVE THEM ALONE.
5. Rude or aggressive members are removed from the group at an organizers discretion.
6. This is a face-to-face language exchange event. DO NOT try to arrange an online meeting, by using the comment box or direct message.
7. Most of our members complained about people writing in the comment box. Since it sends notification to all attendees. If you have any questions, send a message to the organizers. Don't write in the comment box.
8. We have ZERO TOLERANCE for solicitation. We don't allow anyone to run their own agenda at the Event. If you are interested to promote/sponsor/collaborate; contact us via (info@merevents.com).
9. When you get there, we will greet you and take you to your respective group.
10. Don't be shy of your local languages. We have diplomates assigned to different countries, who would love to practice your languages.

Photograph Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens July 4th
In previous years, the rangers said they try to get to the park and open the gate by 7:45 AM.

Waterlilies are bountiful all over the park! Our volunteers moved the tropical lilies from the hothouses to the display ponds, and they are vibrant. Bird enthusiasts have been enjoying watching the 3 young fledgling red-shouldered hawks, nesting orchard orioles, and kingbirds. Turtles have been laying eggs, and tadpoles and frogs are abundant in the ponds.
Every year, we visit Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens on July 4th. The lotus flowers start blooming in early June and will be plentiful by the end of the month. The best time to visit is in the morning as the temperatures are cooler and the flowers close up in the heat of the day, usually around 1:30 pm.
I know it is outside of the Virginia Beltway, but it is not far. It is a very unique place in Washington, DC. I will be there in my red smart car and rain or shine (hopefully shine)!

Rain poncho and plastic bags for the camera and lens in case of rain.
Share only your very best, most interesting shots after the field trip, and keep it down to between 5 and 10 photos.

I generally schedule this meetup on the Fourth of July, as I would have the day off. They are open on July 4th, but one year we waited until 9:00 AM until a ranger showed up to unlock the gate and it wasn’t a holiday. I also want to mention security as one year a photographer in my group was at the gardens and saw someone’s car being broken into in the parking lot.
From the parking lot, walk towards the gardens down the path. I usually stay to the left and head into the lotus fields. Please be careful, as there are just dirt paths between the fields, and if there has been a lot of rain, there can be ruts, and I almost twisted my ankle.
You actually need a fairly long lens as the Lotus flowers are tall and can be some distance away. A wide-angle is only good for some overall shots and a good-sized macro works as well. Another thing folks do not realize is that the flowers do bloom into September, but have many full blooms. This is one park where you do not have to worry about mosquitoes as they are eaten by pond beetles, dragonflies, and damselfly larvae, and also by frogs and birds.
There is a boardwalk at the back of the flower fields that goes out to a marsh area. I have seen many types of birds and dragonflies in that area. Being there makes it hard to believe that you are in Washington, DC.
On the way out, allow some time to check out the small ponds with different lotus and lilies that also attract frogs and dragonflies.

Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done.
SCHEDULE:
10:00 - SESSION 1: quick intros.
10:10 - timer starts: write for 1 hour.
11:10 - chat / take off / keep writing.
OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens at 11A-11:30ish. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing.
BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get settled, then check-in with me after the session. (I’ll be the person with the Shut Up & Write! sign.) If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer.

Whatever you need to be able to write!
Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to block noise or the occasional conversation by other patrons. Electrical outlets are limited, so charge your devices before whenever possible.
