A Tale of Two Cities: The Dublin of Swift and Joyce
Come to this fascinating lecture at the James Joyce Centre as part of the Bloomsday Celebrations.
COST: 11:70 euros Tickets from Eventbrite
Dive into the "Dublins" of literary legends Jonathan Swift and James Joyce in this special Bloomsday Festival lecture by Dr. Brendan Twomey.
Join us at **[The James Joyce Centre](https://www.jamesjoyce.ie/ "https://www.jamesjoyce.ie")** for a special **[Bloomsday Festival](https://www.bloomsdayfestival.ie/ "https://www.bloomsdayfestival.ie")** lecture on **Monday, 15 June at 5:30 pm** by **Dr. Brendan Twomey** about how the city of Dublin shaped (and were shaped by) two of its most iconic writers: **Jonathan Swift** and **James Joyce**.
This illustrated talk will use the **[Brookings map of Dublin](https://www.dublinportarchive.com/collection/charles-brooking-map-dublin/ "https://www.dublinportarchive.com/collection/charles-brooking-map-dublin/")** of 1728 and Swift's comments on Dublin city as a starting point. Swift and Joyce may have been separated by two centuries but to say that they were opinionated about their native city is an understatement. Both writers have instant global visual and literary recognition that is forever associated with Dublin and both are still relevant "after all these years." Both sought, albeit using very different registers and coming from very different social, economic and cultural perspectives, to capture the essence of the spirit of their home city as reflected in its people, its politics, as well as its physical manifestation in its streetscapes and its buildings.

Bloomsday Tour: The Language of Flowers, Botanic Gardens, D9
Come join me on a botanic odyssey through the flowers, plants, and blooms which inspired James Joyce's work.
Tour Date: 16th of June at 2pm
Meeting: Inside the Visitor Centre for 1.45pm.
Tickets: Please pre book your ticket before you RSVP.
Tickets can be purchased for âŹ5 on Eventbrite.
Once you mention in the Meetup Comments that your ticket is booked, you will be moved from the waiting list to the Going List.
From the ancient elms of Finnegans Wake to the floral dictionaries of Ulysses, this tour will illuminate a fascination with plants that accompanied Joyce throughout his life and has received little critical comment.
This tour will also delve into how Joyce appropriates and interprets some of the literary history of Glasnevin, examining it's associations with figures like Jonathan Swift and Thomas Tickell.
I look forward to seeing you there.
Bray's History + Culture Free Walking Tour
Hi everyone, I'm Jake and I'm a local history student based in Bray offering free walking tours!
Today itâs known as a seaside resort and commuter town, but Brayâs history stretches back thousands of years. The area has evidence of human activity dating back to prehistoric times and even has links to the Romans. The name âBrayâ is believed to come from the Irish BrĂ Chualann, meaning âhill of Cualuâ, referring to the nearby headland known as Bray Head.
Today Bray is the largest town in County Wicklow with a population of almost 35,000. Come along and find out about it's fascinating history!
[FREE] 2hrs Walk: Dun Laoghaire West Pier, East Pier & Sandycove
This event is free though donations (cash or Revolut) are very much welcome as I renew my Meetup Organiser subscription annually in the Summer and I prefer to cover this cost of $215 (they invoice us in dollars) through optional donations in the Summer instead of having a set fee per event. Thanks!
Hello!
Meeting Place: Dun Laoghaire train station
Meeting Time: 4pm.
Departure Time: 405pm sharp
We will walk the West Pier, the East Pier and then to Sandycove Beach and finish at Sandycove train station.
Note / Disclaimer: Attending this event and every event in this group is entirely in every way at your own risk.
Any questions, message me.
Please please don't cancel on the day or forget to join us.
It's important you join us if you sign up as it means people on the waiting list lose out if you don't take your place.
Thanks!
