Summer by the Lake — Korean Snacks, Untold Stories & New Friends
Picture this: a warm summer evening by Lake Zurich.
Korean snacks.
A true story you've never heard before. And new friends from around the world.
👋 I'm Cynthia — a 🇰🇷 Korean-Canadian author 🇨🇦, speaker, and lover of good conversations. I'm spending the summer in Zurich and wanted to create a space to meet interesting people and share something close to my heart.
My book is set to be published very soon internationally by a prestigious university press in Singapore, with distribution through a leading university press in the US. It tells my family's true story — a Korean family separated by war, a great-grandmother who rebuilt her life from nothing over and over, and a reunion of my family across the North-South Korean border that most people thought was impossible.
🌸 Think Crash Landing on You — but real 🌸
I'll share a few snippets from the book, we'll eat Korean snacks I'm bringing from Seoul, and we'll have an open conversation about anything — Korean culture, life abroad, identity, making friends in a new city, whatever comes up.
No knowledge of Korea required. No agenda. Just good energy, good food, and good people by the water ✨
Bring a blanket or a mat. I'll bring the story and the snacks.
See you there! 😊

Hackergarten June
We're planning the next Hackergarten Zurich 🥳 We're looking forward to see some familiar faces and share knowledge within the open-source community. Spread the word — everyone is welcome! Bring your project, a bug, a feature, a question... or just your time and enthusiasm 💜 As always there will be free drinks, beer and pizza, sponsored by Quatico.
As usual we briefly present the open-source projects we'd like to work on, break up into groups and try to make an actual contribution. We offer free pizza, beverages and depending on weather conditions a great view on Zurich West from the rooftop terrace.
Many thanks to Quatico (https://www.quatico.com) for hosting the event!
The future of our work starts with a conversation
*«The creative and UX industry is changing fast. Roles are shifting, tools are evolving, expectations are rising, and many people are asking what their skills will be worth in the future.»*
**This evening is not a classic Last Thursday Talk.** UX Schweiz and Syndicom invite the community to **a workshop and open exchange** for people working in UX, design, research, strategy, communication and related creative fields.
The focus is especially on people at the beginning of their careers, people in transition, and everyone currently asking: **What does the future of our work actually look like?** We want to create a space for hopes, concerns, changing roles, useful skills, new tools, AI, career paths and possible forms of support within the community. Uncertainty is allowed, but we do not want to stay stuck in fear.
The evening starts with a short input by **[Pascal Geronimi](https://www.linkedin.com/in/pascal-geronimi-5112b324/).** After that, we will work in small groups: collecting thoughts, clustering topics, discussing what matters most, and sharing key insights.
Together, we want to explore:
* What currently gives us hope?
* What feels uncertain or worrying?
* How are roles, tools and expectations changing?
* Which skills and mindsets might become more important?
* What kind of support could UX Schweiz, Syndicom or the wider community offer?
**This is an experimental format.** Because this is a workshop-style event, **places are limited**. Please only register if you are quite sure you can attend. If your plans change, please cancel your RSVP so someone else can join.
**Format**
* Short intro input
* Small-group exchange
* Shared takeaways in the plenum
* Optional informal drinks afterwards nearby
**A small question before you come**
You do not need to prepare anything. But take a moment to think about this: ***When you think about the future of your work: what gives you hope, and what makes you unsure?***
**Practical information**
• The event will be held in English.
• The number of participants is limited.
• Please arrive a few minutes early so we can start on time.
District Runners Community Run
Do you want to run regularly? Together in a group?
Then run with us!
#### **Every Thursday, 7pm at Lochergut, Zurich**
We run about 7km and adjust the speed depending on the runners who join us.
For us, running isn’t just about fitness and competition, it’s about community and connection. We believe that nobody should have to run alone, and that by running together, we can push each other to be stronger and more resilient.
We look forward to welcoming you to the next run 🙌

Urban Sketching @ Botanischer Garten Grüningen

DE

EN
After several meetups in the city, it is time for another small trip outside Zurich. Our destination is the [Botanical Garden Grüningen](https://maps.app.goo.gl/CJaHZA7BzW2MNqDw9?g_st=ic), set on a hill above the historic little town and shaped like an arboretum. The award-winning greenhouse, trees and shrubs from around the world, and the varied outdoor spaces offer plenty of sketching subjects somewhere between plant study and architecture. Even in less-than-perfect weather, the visit is well worth it: there are several sheltered places to draw and take cover, not only inside the greenhouse itself. We are very pleased to be welcomed to the garden and would like to warmly thank our hosts for the invitation.
**Meeting point**
At the entrance to the Botanical Garden Grüningen.
**Getting there**
By public transport, you can reach the garden from Zurich, Winterthur or Rapperswil via S-Bahn to Wetzikon ZH, then bus 867 to Grüningen, Im Haufland. From Uster, take bus 845 to Grüningen, Im Haufland. From the bus stop, it is about a 20-minute walk to the garden.
If you are coming by car, free parking is available.
More information can be found here: [https://www.botanischer-garten.ch/den-garten-besuchen/](https://www.botanischer-garten.ch/den-garten-besuchen/)
**Entrance**
The entrance is free of charge.
Please bring your own drawing materials and, ideally, a small folding stool. No prior experience required. We sketch for about 2 hours, solo or in small groups, at an easy pace. Afterwards we regroup, share our sketches and take a group photo. As always, we follow the Urban Sketchers values: https://urbansketchers.org/who-we-are/#mission/

Batik Tulis Workshop – Wax & Dye Textile Art (Zurich)
**Step away from the pace of everyday life and spend a day immersed in the quiet rhythm of batik.**
Batik is a traditional wax-resist textile art where patterns emerge slowly through the interaction of hot wax and dye. The process invites patience, attention, and a different sense of time — one where the act of making becomes as important as the final piece.
In this studio workshop we will explore the traditional batik tulis process using canting (the wax drawing tool) and dye.
The day unfolds gradually: observing how wax flows, how colour layers develop, and how patterns begin to reveal themselves on cloth.
Working with batik often becomes a quiet conversation between intention and discovery — balancing moments of control with moments of letting go as the wax and dye take their course. Many participants find that the process creates a natural space for focus, reflection, and an inner dialogue that unfolds through making.
During the workshop you will:
• learn the fundamentals of traditional batik wax-resist techniques
• create two small batik textiles (one guided, one your own design)
• experience the slow, meditative rhythm of working with wax, colour, and pattern

Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for July is "Shoes"
Speak Easy: true stories, told live.
The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast.
Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect.
The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!
