The root of this success arguably lies in he combination of highly optimised libraries such as NumPy with Python's ease of use when it comes to combining such libraries. In this talk, we discuss some of the limitations of this approach and we propose an alternative that is based on code generation rather than the combination of hardware-specific libraries. **About Bodo** Bodo is a professor in computer science at Radboud University. His research is driven by the desire to bridge the gap between high-productivity programming tools and high-performance computing on heterogeneous many-core systems by means of compilation / code generation technology. He is a key contributor to the functional data-parallel array programming language SaC (www.sac-home.org).

'CONVENIENCE STORE WOMAN' by Sayaka Murata 'Keiko Furukura had always been considered a strange child, and her parents always worried how she would get on in the real world, so when she takes on a job in a convenience store while at university, they are delighted for her. For her part, in the convenience store she finds a predictable world mandated by the store manual, which dictates how the workers should act and what they should say, and she copies her coworkers' style of dress and speech patterns so that she can play the part of a normal person. However, eighteen years later, at age 36, she is still in the same job, has never had a boyfriend, and has only few friends. She feels comfortable in her life, but is aware that she is not living up to society's expectations and causing her family to worry about her. When a similarly alienated but cynical and bitter young man comes to work in the store, he will upset Keiko's contented stasis--but will it be for the better? Sayaka Murata brilliantly captures the atmosphere of the familiar convenience store that is so much part of life in Japan. 📍 Hilversum Station, 10:00 → Pinetum → back by ~14:00 🚶‍♂️ Short walk (~20–30 min each way) 🎯 Main location: Pinetum Blijdenstein (€4 entry) This time we’re keeping it shorter and focusing on one beautiful spot: the Pinetum — a small botanical garden dedicated to pine trees, full of interesting shapes, textures, and quiet corners to sketch. We’ll meet at Hilversum Station at 10:00, walk together to the garden (arriving around 10:30), and spend about 2 hours sketching. There are some benches, but not many — please bring a foldable chair if you’d like to sit while sketching (blankets won’t work here). Around 12:30, we’ll head back toward the station. If people feel like it, we can grab coffee and maybe lunch at Mout before wrapping up around 14:00.
