Game Dev Working Session (Tysons-Pimmit VA Library Conference Room)
**Location**: Tysons-Pimmit Regional Library (Virginia) Conference Room
A game development **Working Session** involves 3 key parts:
1. Tell people what you're going to do
2. Actually do stuff
3. Show people what you did
That's what we'll be doing for this meeting. We'll briefly tell each other what we're going to do, then work on our projects, then at around 5:30 wrap up to show each other what we did and chat for a bit.
You don't have to stay the whole time, so feel free to drop in and out as you have time.
All game development skill levels welcome. Whether you're bringing a game you're trying to ship in a month, or you're just planning on following some tutorials or trying out a new tool to improve your skills, use this time to make progress.
Working sessions also train you to think about the scope of your work: pick a chunk of work that you can complete in the time that we have. That way you can end the working session with a feeling of accomplishment!
**What to bring**: Laptop, Charger, maybe a power strip if you have one handy, any other game development tools you need. Try to download any software you need before the working session. There is Wifi at this location, but it may be slow if you have to download any large files.
Last-Second Swerve
Let's get into some in-person games! For those new to the group, I have a wide selection of Nintendo systems on hand, and you're welcome to bring your own games, consoles or portable systems. A second TV is available. If possible, mention when you plan to arrive, as this can help in deciding when certain games would best be played.
You can park along Armistead, Quantrell or Lincolnia, or Wilson. If you arrive after 6, you can also park on Breckinridge with no time limit. I can provide transportation from Van Dorn Metro before and after the event.
Cyberpunk Movie Night
Each week weâll revisit the core cyberpunk classics â starting with Blade Runner (1982), then Ghost in the Shell (1995), Johnny Mnemonic (1995), Strange Days (1995), The Matrix (1999), eXistenZ (1999), and Blame! (2017).
Coffee & Connection: Neurodiverse Meetup
Hi everyone! đ
First, a **big thank you** to everyone who joined our last meetup before the holidays â it was genuinely great spending time together, and I really appreciate everyone who came out and helped make it such a welcoming space.
Just a quick reminder that our next meetup is coming up:
đď¸ **Saturday, February 7**
â° **10:00 AM**
â **Compass Coffee â Rosslyn**
đ **1201 Wilson Blvd, Arlington, VA**
đ **Short walk from the Rosslyn Metro**
Compass Coffee has a relaxed vibe and **two floors of seating**, so we should have plenty of space to hang out and chat.
This is a **casual, low-pressure get-together** for neurodivergent adults (and supportive friends/allies) to connect, share, and just be ourselves. Whether youâve been before or this is your first time â **youâre very welcome.**
Feel free to bring anything or a parent or a friend that helps you feel comfortable (headphones, fidgets, a book, etc.).
Hope to see you there! ââ¨

One light dramatic portraits in small spaces
This class is a practical, hands-on introduction to creating strong, dramatic portraits using a single light source.
Weâll be working in a small studio environment with one model and one light, focusing on how light placement, distance, and modifier choice completely change mood and shape. This is not a lecture-only classâyouâll see the setup demonstrated and then rotate through shooting time yourself.
What weâll cover
⢠How to shape dramatic light with a single source
⢠Light placement for short light, broad light, and high-contrast looks
⢠Controlling shadow depth and falloff in tight spaces
⢠Using minimal gear to create intentional, cinematic portraits
⢠Directing a model efficiently while lighting stays simple
What to expect
⢠Small group (10 photographers max)
⢠One shared lighting setup, adjusted live so you can see cause and effect
⢠Time to shoot the model and ask questions as we go
⢠Emphasis on decision-making, not presets or gimmicks
Who this is for
⢠Beginner to early-intermediate photographers
⢠Anyone who feels overwhelmed by multi-light setups
⢠Photographers who want stronger, more intentional portraits
What to bring
⢠Any camera (DSLR or mirrorless)
⢠A lens in the 35â85mm range is ideal
⢠Fully charged batteries and memory card
Lighting gear and model are provided. You just focus on shooting and learning.

Chez Joey - Curtain at 2PM
Join us for *Chez Joey* at Arena Stage on Sunday, February 8 at 2PM.
Our 4-ticket block in Left Orchestra Row I is full. I have Center Orchestra I-110 available and Left Orchestra H-13 available, and I can also get a ticket block in the Mezzanine (sorry, but the Orchestra just has solo seats at this point).
The year is 1940-something, and Chicagoâs night scene is sizzling. Enter Joey Evans. A slick-talking, velvet-voiced songster with dreams bigger than the bandstand. But in a city where the right connections mean everything, he is caught between a bright-eyed chorus girl and a wealthy widow who can bankroll his big breakâfor a price. As the lights dim and the music swells, Joeyâs got a choice to make: play it straight or risk it all for the spotlight. This classic Rodgers and Hart score, including âBewitched, Bothered and Bewildered,â âWhat Is a Man?,â and âI Could Write a Book,â now includes âThis Canât Be Loveâ and âThe Lady Is a Tramp,â among others. Co-directed by Tony Award-winning choreographer Savion Glover and actor, director, and producer Tony Goldwyn, the stakes are high, the music is hot, and the game of romance and ambition never sounded so good.

Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for February is "Transitions"
Speak Easy: true stories, told live.
The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast.
Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect.
The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!
