Death in Venice by Thomas Mann
Thanks to everyone who joined for our discussion of Djuna Barnes’ *Nightwood*. As always, it was a pleasure to see both familiar and new faces, and I hope you all enjoyed the conversation.
The next book to read is *[Death in Venice](https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/53061.Death_in_Venice)* (*Der Tod in Venedig*, 1912) by [Thomas Mann](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Mann).
Set in the beautiful but decaying city of Venice, the novella follows Gustav von Aschenbach, a distinguished writer who travels south in search of rest and inspiration. There he becomes fascinated by a young Polish boy whose beauty gradually awakens emotions and obsessions that challenge his sense of order, discipline, and self-control.
A short description of the book reads:
One of the most celebrated works of twentieth-century literature, *Death in Venice* is a haunting exploration of beauty, desire, art, aging, and mortality. Combining psychological depth with rich symbolism, Thomas Mann’s novella remains one of the defining works of European modernism.
You can read more about the book on Wikipedia [here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_in_Venice), find it on Goodreads [here](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/53061.Death_in_Venice?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=7z83p9EOgb&rank=1), and listen to it as an audiobook on YouTube [here](https://youtu.be/f-JK5W99LVs?si=o8T2fgHe-Hn95sTe).
There is also a famous [film adaptation](https://www.justwatch.com/dk/movie/death-in-venice) from 1971, directed by Luchino Visconti. The film won several international awards and is widely regarded as one of the finest literary adaptations ever made. It is particularly noted for its stunning cinematography, its use of music by Gustav Mahler, and its faithful recreation of the atmosphere of Mann’s novella.
For other resources on how to get a hold of classic books, please see the [About](https://www.meetup.com/copenhagen-classic-book-book-club/) section on the front page of the group.
Please note that I know we originally agreed to meet on Saturday, August 22nd. However, after doing a bit of research and realizing just how short *Death in Venice* actually is, essentially a novella—depending on the edition, it ranges from roughly 56 to 140 pages—I have decided to move the discussion forward to Saturday, July 4th instead. I hope everyone will still be able to make it. This way, we’ll also have plenty of time to choose and read another book during the summer.
We meet up on **Saturday, July 4th, at 4 p.m.**
The location will once again be the [Royal Library Garden](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Library_Garden,_Copenhagen). During the spring and summer months, we always meet outside here. If the weather turns rainy, we will simply move indoors.
Please remember to bring your suggestion for the next classic book to read.
Also, if you plan to attend, please remember to click “Attend” on Meetup. Likewise, if you know that you won’t be able to make it, it is very helpful if you update your RSVP accordingly. It makes it easier for everyone to get an idea of how many people to expect.
And, as always, please be mindful and respectful of each other, so that everyone feels welcome and appreciated.
In the meantime, happy reading/listening/watching — or however you prefer to do it.

Café Philo Copenhagen
We meet on Saturdays late mornings to have a casual, meaningful conversation on topics of interest to everyone chosen on the spot by majority voting. So please feel free to propose your own topic!
Everyone is welcome to talk, but if you prefer to just join and listen, that is perfect too.
As the contacted cafés usually only give reservations to eating guests, it is very welcome if you order something to eat during our stay. This is however not mandatory.
This event is in English.
The exact place can still change.
Shut Up & Write!™ Copenhagen
Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at our Copenhagen Shut Up & Write! sessions.
Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, résumé, melody, poem, or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done.
SCHEDULE:
- 15 minutes of hellos and getting settled; maybe some quick intros.
- Then, the timer starts! : writing for 1 hour.
- After the hour is up... chat / take off / keep writing, if you're on a roll.
OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens once the hour of writing is complete. Writing can be very solitary... connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing.
It's best to be on time, but BEING LATE IS ALSO OKAY: just show up and get settled, then check in with us after the session. (We’ll be the ones with the small Shut Up & Write! sign.) If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer.
What Should I Bring?
Whatever you need to be able to write!
Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to block the cafe’s overhead music or the occasional conversation by other patrons.

Housewarmers work with RMH guests to provide a home-like environment - greet, assist with family needs, answer phones, give tours, assist with checkin/checkout, prepare guest rooms after checkout, clean facility, laundry, restock supplies and staff the front desk. RMH Housewarmers volunteer at least one four-hour shift a month. All Housewarmers must complete an application and agree to a background check before they can be full fledged volunteers.
Free in Person Meeting - Get Over Losses and Betrayls
Do you want more motivation and confidence to build Lasting Relationships?
This is a free, in-person meeting on the subject of betrayals, losses and how to get over them so you can build lasting relationships.
Are you burdened by a stressful relationship? Unhealthy relationships can trigger feelings of anger, despair or self-doubt. They can create dwindling spirals of fights and seeking to make-up, or trying to “pin the blame” on someone or something. If you don’t find the RIGHT reasons, or select the correct sources of the problem, the problem can just get worse and worse.
Whether in love or personal ties, with friends or at work, our life really IS affected by the quality of our relationships. Good ones can promote pleasure and survival, while less optimum ones can lead to annoyance, anger, self-doubt, stress, or even affect our health and ability to survive well.
Whether you are suffering from a divorce, or a painful break-up, don’t know who to trust (or who to CHOOSE) as a partner, friend, boss or employee - the anxiety of relationship troubles can really make a mess of things. Maybe you’ve suffered a betrayal, or are dealing with hostility or criticalness or invalidation. Dwindling relationships can involve destructive behavior, where we hurt those we love, or start succumbing to self-destructive thoughts, attitudes or behaviors that spiral out of control and affect much more than our immediate relationship.
Past losses in love or life can affect how we act or react to new people and situations and hold us back from even starting to create new, possibly great relationships! How can one get back onto a saner course of action?
Come to our Meetup, where we can introduce you to some of the knowledge, tools and techniques of the breakthroughs in the field of the mind that we can apply to this ever important area of life: human relationships!
Break free from self imposed limitations
Here we will discuss:
• How to “erase” the trauma of past hurts and betrayals so that one isn’t always repeating past mistakes.
• Why and how do the negative emotions of others affect you?
• Why is my partner withdrawing and what can I do about it?
• Why do we sometimes feel compelled to hurt the ones we love?
• Fights & arguments - what's really behind them?
• What underlies “corrosive criticism” or the need to invalidate self or others?
• How one can stably change one’s outlook on life so they can affect positive change?
• Where do compulsive destructive behaviors come from and what can be done about them?
• How to form closer bonds & keep growing the relationships with the people you care about?
• How to enhance one’s own ability to survive and create positive healthy relationships whether in love, family & friendships or in work, business or one’s career?
Relationships can be hard and life itself IS challenging. Why not arm yourself with the knowledge and breakthroughs that have been made about the mind, mental reactions & interpersonal relationships, so that one has better awareness and control over themselves and life in general.
Learn where painful experiences are “stored” and how they can unknowingly affect us. You will also find out how one can “erase” those past painful experiences so that one is free to move forward without being tripped up by the past. Learn too, about what can lead some people to become “toxic” personalities and how to identify those traits in others so you won’t be tripped up trusting the wrong person.
Our free Meet-ups occur in a safe environment where one can learn, without fear of judgment or criticism, and without the recommendation of harmful mental techniques or therapies, just how YOU can get yourself onto a happier & more successful path: in love & in life.
Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to this local event. We look forward to seeing you there.
This class is held at the Dianetics and Scientology Life Improvement Center.
