We’ll hike through northern hardwood forests and cross streams on our ascent of Balsam Mountain. Some of these trails are relatively new. They were rerouted after Hurricane Irene in 2011. Once at the top, we’ll traverse Balsam’s long ridge and enjoy a beautiful viewpoint before reaching the summit. If we have time and the group is feeling up to the task, we will tag Eagle, another 3500 peak. This is an excellent adventure for hikers looking for a gentler introduction to the Catskill tall peaks.
This is a required peak for [Catskill 3500 Club Membership](https://www.adventureuntamed.com/3500-club/) and #26 Catskill Tall Peak (elevation 3,608′). This is one of the four peaks that must be climbed twice, at least once in winter (December 21 – March 21).

*Our skiing members have spoken, and we hear you! We know it's really difficult to get up north to where the good snow is, especially for those of us who live in the city and don't own a car.*
*So we're offering a special event for winter enthusiasts: An outing with low cost Concrete to Trails bus transportation to NY State's Adirondack Park for a weekend of winter adventure on skis, snowboards or snowshoes. Winter sports fans of all levels are welcome, from beginners to experts!*
We'll be providing bus transportation to Gore Mountain and Garnet Hill for downhill skiing, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing. For those of you with alpine touring or splitboard rigs, we'll be offering our very first Resort-To-Backcountry Ski Clinic.
*ACTIVITIES:*
*DOWNHILL SKIING:*
*Gore Mountain is a premier alpine ski resort with a wide variety of exciting trails for all levels from Novice to Advanced, including the notorious double-black duo of "The Rumor" and "Lies." Gore's glades are some of the best around. Or you can take a long, leisurely ride down the blue cruisers "Cloud" and "Headwaters." There is an attractive selection of green trails for novices and beginners. Gore is the largest ski resort in New York, and one of the best in the East. There are three warm lodges with food service and amenities. Lessons and rentals are available (extra-cost option).*
*CROSS COUNTRY SKIING:*
*Garnet Hill is an excellent Nordic center with first-rate grooming and a varied trail network. Garnet Hill borders on the Siamese Ponds Wilderness Area, which is famous for its Nordic backcountry ski trails. That's perfect for an advanced cross country skier to try out Nordic backcountry skiing (cross country skiing on ungroomed trails in the backcountry). Lessons and rentals are available (extra-cost option).*
*SNOWSHOEING:*
*Garnet Hill also has a network of snowshoe trails. The center offers guided tours and snowshoe rentals.*
*BACKCOUNTRY SKIING:*
*New for 2025-26, the North Creek Ski Bowl (a.k.a. Little Gore) is offering two Uphill Skiing routes for 'skinning up' on your skis or splitboard, \*free of charge\*. If you own your own alpine touring or splitboard setups with climbing skins, we can practice our backcountry touring skills at the Ski Bowl. If conditions are good, we may be able to ski a historic down-mountain ski trail starting near the Garnet Hill Cross Country Ski Center going all the way down to the North Creek Ski Bowl. This ski tour is rated 'intermediate' and is intended for experienced and fully equipped backcountry skiers or splitboarders only. Please note that there are no alpine touring or splitboard rentals available. You will need to bring your own setup for these activities.*
*LODGING:*
Lodging is at North Acres Farm. To keep costs low, we are sharing rooms, so your flexibility is appreciated. It is located conveniently on the extensive Garnet Hill Cross Country Ski and Snowshoe trail system. Only 10 spots are available, so register soon!
*TRANSPORTATION:*
For non-drivers, a convenient AMC Concrete to Trails bus will take participants from NYC's George Washington Bridge Bus Station, leaving Friday at 3:00 PM. Lake Placid Ski Weekend
Hi Hikers,
I'm heading to Lake Placid for a weekend of winter fun. Depending on conditions, any combination of backcountry cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, resort cross-country, or even snowshoeing is possible, but I'm aiming for:
* Downhill skiing at Whiteface on Saturday
* Backcountry XC skiing (with the Appalachian Mountain Club) on Sunday
**Two important notes:**
1. Winter trips are always difficult to plan due to varied conditions and plans might change at the least minute. Just bear that in mind. However, as of Feb 9th, conditions are the best they've been in years! ([See bark eater ski conditions for updates](https://www.betatrails.org/conditions).)
2. I screen all participants for weekend trips. If you are interested, RSVP and shoot me (Andre) a message. As with all of Hiking & Nature's trips, this is not a guided or paid trip. It is a social trip for outdoor enthusiasts, and I want to check that everyone has accurate expectations.
**Trip Details:**
* **Schedule:** Plan to arrive Friday night for a full day of activities Saturday and a half day Sunday before driving back.
* **Cost:** Attendees are responsible for their own lodging, food, transport, and other costs.
* **Lodging:** TBD. Tmax Hostel by default ($32/night for bunk rooms). There is potential to book a house or condo if a good deal on a refundable option becomes available.
**Required Gear & Skills for BC XC:**
* **Solid expert resort XC skills:** Backcountry trails can be much steeper and narrower than resort blacks. They are ungroomed (or even unbroken) and may contain unbridged stream crossings, blowdowns, and other backcountry hazards.
* **Backcountry cross-country gear:** BC XC skis with metal edges are required, with a backcountry boot and backcountry binding (for example: Fischer Traverse 78 Crown). Skins are highly recommended.
* **Layered winter clothing suitable for temps in the single digits:** Wicking base-layer top and bottom; insulating top layer (usually fleece); windbreaker/softshell jacket; insulated water-resistant pants; waterproof shell pants and jacket; big puffy jacket; warm and water-resistant gloves and mittens (two pair); face protection; winter hat; headlamp; gaiters; chemical hand and foot warmers.
