Monday Courthouse MLK Run - 50 Min
Monday Courthouse MLK Run - 50 Min
On Monday, we'll meet in front of 2100 Clarendon Blvd and head towards the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial. Notes: If you're not familiar with the area, please review the routes. If it's cold, take cover inside the foyer area of 2100 Clarendon Blvd. Photos taken during the event may end up on Instagram, Meetup, Strava and similar platforms. Routes: We'll run 25 minutes out and then turn around and run 25 minutes back to Courthouse. Everyone runs at his/her own pace, so the distance will depend on your speed. 1. Courthouse to Arlington Cemetery over Memorial Bridge then towards the MLK Memorial. Depending on your preferred pace, you may turn around at any point on the route. Pace: All paces are welcome! We'll be doing an out and back route, so everyone will just turn around at the halfway time marker. That way we should all start and end at the same time. Free Parking at Courthouse Plaza: The underground garage (http://tiny.cc/OmKZx) is on Clarendon Blvd btwn Wayne and Veitch Sts. (near Strayer/CVS and the AMC Theater). If the first 2 levels on the left are full, you can park on the lower levels to the right. Street and Surface Parking lots should be free in the area as well. Metro: Orange or Silver line to Courthouse Station.
ADMO MLK Day Walk for Service & Community
ADMO MLK Day Walk for Service & Community
This event combines a beautiful, slow-paced neighborhood walk through Adams Morgan (ADMO) with a meaningful day of service in honor of MLK Day. The approximately 3.0-mile loop begins at Pitango Café (1841 Columbia Rd NW) and winds through local streets and parks as we pick up litter and help protect our neighborhood environment. Much of the trash found in our community eventually washes into the Potomac River during rainstorms, and this walk offers a simple but impactful way to make a difference. Our route will pass through Kalorama and Waterside, continue down to the Zoo Loop, and return via Walter Pierce and Unity Parks. Gloves, bags, and masks will be provided, and the walking surfaces will be paved sidewalks and asphalt paths. The pace will be relaxed, but participants should be comfortable walking three miles and should use their judgment if they have back or mobility concerns. Please bring water, snacks, layered clothing, and sturdy, comfortable footwear. Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome, and optional brunch in Adams Morgan afterward is available for those who would like to join. This is a joint hike between the ADMO Hiking Club and the Sierra Club. All hikers will be required to sign the Sierra Club waiver form to participate. Sierra Club Potomac Region Outings (SCPRO) appreciates a voluntary $2 per person donation to support our many volunteer-led activities. Also, you can become a Sierra Club member by clicking "join" on the Virginia Sierra Club website: [http://www.sierraclub.org/virginia](http://www.sierraclub.org/virginia) Dupont Circle is the closest Metro stop (.6 miles). Bus routes C51, C53, D70, and D74 are all within a couple blocks of Pitango. There is metered and free street parking in the surrounding neighborhood. Please arrive early so you have enough time to find parking.
Monday night board games - Early Start Due to MLK Day!
Monday night board games - Early Start Due to MLK Day!
**First timer? Read the FAQ below!** **Q: Is this event free?** A: Overall, yes, until you get addicted and start buying games too! There is an expectation to at least buy a drink from the Cantina. They work hard to keep up with us and we want to support them as well. Buying food is better, but a drink would be expected. If you cannot afford a drink one week, try for another week. **Q: Where is everyone?** A: Gaming usually happens to the left of the main door on top of the platform. Sometimes, we get moved around a little bit and may be in the booths. You can always ask the waitstaff where we are, especially if games are not out yet and we are chatting. **Q: What time is the event?** A: 5:30 pm to however late people stick around. The bar is open until 1, and the grill/sushi closes at 10. It really depends on what game is getting played vs. people’s own schedules. Most people stick around until 8:30/9. People tend to eat around 5:30 until 6 and then we figure out the games around 6 pm. **Q: How do I start playing a game?** A: We all just kind of figure it out as we go. At the beginning of the evening (or when a game finishes) we generally just try and take stock of how many people are looking to start a game and figure out what make the most sense with style of game and interest. If you're new or are looking for a particular type of game to play, mention it so we can find the best fit for the most people. Most people who own the games are happy to teach them, and that is what happens most of the time. Also let the organizers know how long you'd like to play as some games are long (over 3 hours). **Q: What kind of games do you play?** A: Because we're constantly trying out new games, it's common that it's a first time for most of the players. An explanation of the rules is a standard part of the experience, so just come ready to learn and have fun. Our group tends to heavily play “Euros”. We will play other board game types, but be aware that older board games, such as Monopoly, Sorry or traditional older board are not played. Most games are at least an hour long. Some games are much longer than that. Please let the people starting games how long you plan on sticking around. **Q: Can I show up late?** A: Yes, but keep in mind that there may be no free players right when you do. You'll probably have to wait a while for a game to break up so you can join in. Please let people know that you want to play so we can accommodate you and fit you in. ***We generally start playing after 6***. Also note that many of the games we play are often 1.5-4+ hours long. Being on time is helpful to playing a game. **Q: Can I eat while I play?** A: Often yes, but always ask the owner of the game. Games are mostly paper, after all, and no one wants greasy finger foods turning their game into a very expensive napkin. Most of us get there earlier to eat and then play. The tables are not very big, so you may have to put your food off to the side while playing. **Q: Do I have to bring a game?** A: No, people bring quite a few games. A lot of them new (in the last year). **Q: But *can* I bring a game?** A: Absolutely! Every game at this event is brought by attendees. Just be sure you're familiar enough with the rules to teach new players. **Q: What if I didn't RSVP?** A: No one is going to pester you about it if you forget or just make a last minute decision to join in... BUT a high RSVP count lets other meetup folk know that the group is healthy and active. It also helps with emergency situations where we may need to move our location last minute and we can let you know so you don’t end up going to the wrong place. **Q: What if I have a problem with someone in the group?** A: Please let the event organizers be aware of the issue or send a personal message to the organizer of the group. We are an inclusive group but if someone is the type of person who regularly ruins the enjoyment of the others in the game group, we may decide to remove them from the group. We will take it seriously and determine the course of action.
Profs & Pints DC: A Practical Guide to Social Change
Profs & Pints DC: A Practical Guide to Social Change
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“A Practical Guide to Social Change,”** a research-based look at how communities bring about reform and progress, with Marissa Robinson, founder of Real Health Impact LLC and an adjunct professor at George Washington University who teaches courses focused on public health leadership and social change. [Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-social-change](https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-social-change) .] Systems built on inequality rarely transform without deliberate pressure from the people most committed to justice, because progress takes coordination, conviction and willingness to change what has always been accepted. Real change starts when people choose to move together. Learn what research and experience say about how to make real social progress with Dr. Marissa Robinson, a public health practitioner who previously worked in federal agencies coordinating global and national public health initiatives focused on infectious diseases, HIV, and health equity. Among the key questions she’ll tackle: How do communities overcome barriers to create real change? When should evidence guide decisions and when does context matter more? She’ll discuss established frameworks for moving from intention to measurable progress and talk about the importance of building coalitions that actually work and of making decisions grounded in real data. You’ll learn about the importance of testing ideas on a small scale before going big, as well as how to use rapid feedback loops and continuous improvement cycles to refine approaches and scale what truly works. Dr. Robinson will share stories of ordinary people and communities who refused to accept the status quo and pushed through real barriers to achieve breakthrough results. She’ll talk about practical strategies, usable frameworks, and evidence-based examples that people can apply immediately in their own communities and organizations to support change that lasts. If you have dreamed about bringing about progress in your world, this talk will give you the clarity, direction, and confidence it takes to turn such dreams into reality. When is Foreign Intervention Justified?
When is Foreign Intervention Justified?
## Details **Location:** **TBD (Will Update Soon, Check for Updates).** The purpose of Thinkers and Drinkers is to facilitate casual but meaningful and interesting conversations with other people in a face-to-face setting. The topics cover a wide variety of issues and are different for every meeting. While conversations may get heated at times, we ask that all members be respectful of each other and refrain from personal insults. # **Topic: When is Foreign Intervention Justified?** Just three days into the new year, the US launched an operation that captured President Maduro of Venezuela and brought him back to the US to stand trial. This occurred in a time when most Americans, regardless of party affiliation, are against getting involved in another foreign war, with memories of Iraq still fresh in their minds. While it may be too soon to definitely judge the consequences of this intervention, there are many examples of foreign interventions by both the US and other countries in the last century. Some of which were more successful than others. The US intervention in the Gulf War (1991) to liberate Kuwait is considered to have been a quick, decisive victory that was very popular in both the US and Kuwait itself. Other intervention examples by countries include: * USA invasion of Iraq (*2003-2011*) * Soviet invasion of Afghanistan (*1979-1989*) * French intervention in Mali civil conflict (*2013-present*) * Chinese intervention in the Korean War (*1950-1953*) * Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia to overthrow Khmer Rouge (*1978-1989*) * USA intervention in Vietnam War (*1965-1973*) * Indian intervention in Bangladesh independence war (*1971*) * Cuban intervention in Angola civil war (*1975-1991*) * South African intervention in Angola civil war (*1975-1988*) * Russian intervention in Syria civil war (*2015-present*) * Saudi-led intervention in Yemen civil war (*2015-present*) * USA support for coup in Chile against Allende (*1973*) * Soviet suppression of Hungarian Revolution (*1956*) * USA intervention in Dominican Republic (*1965*) * Turkish intervention in Syria civil war (*2016-present*) # **Questions to Consider** * How much should human rights affect the decision to intervene? * Is intervening based on ideological grounds warranted? * How important is maintaining international law on intervention? * Should we differentiate between direct military action and covert (CIA-like) operations to topple governments? * Should security and economic interests be the deciding factor? **SUPPORT THINKERS AND DRINKERS:** Thinkers and Drinkers International is a registered 501(c)7 nonprofit organization. COUNT monthly event: Kitchen service at Van Buren Center's shelter
Come assist Van Buren Shelter (https://ymcacolumbus.org/locations/vanburen) staff in serving dinners and cleaning up on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Dinner for the women is 5-6 pm and for the families is 6:15-7:15 pm. There is ample free parking available in the shelter's lot. The recommended area to park is in green in the image above. There will be a new entrance for the time being. We are asking all volunteers to enter through the Donation Dock door, the orange mark on the image above. This door is located between the Single Adults and Family Shelter. You will see 2 large garage doors with a large green trash compactor in the center. Please head to the closest garage door to the building wall, with a ramp leading up. There, you will see a door with a sign stating instructions on how to enter the building. Please ring the doorbell, and a staff member will come and escort you into the building. If a staff member takes longer than 5 minutes, please call the front desk at 614-689-2020. This is a new process for us, and we do not want to keep you waiting! We appreciate your patience as we navigate this temporary change. The shelter needs a volunteer count the day before the event so sign-up ends Monday at 4:50 PM. Afterwards some of us go to the Omnipresent Atheists Weekly Meetup in progress to have a bit to eat or drink (http://www.meetup.com/omnipresentatheists/). Volunteers must be 14 or older. Since we will be working around families, the YMCA does not permit volunteering by individuals with convictions for violent or sexual crimes. The YMCA reserves the right to run background checks on volunteers. For questions, comment on this page or contact: Andrew, awhit12@yahoo.com, (614)937-5802 (cell). Please let Andrew know if you volunteer anytime other than our COUNT events so that he can count your hours toward our service record.
