Please join us for our first social gathering of 2026! This month, we'll be gathering at Busboys and Poets, Takoma Park. Located only a short walk from the Takoma Park metro, Busboys and Poets is a restaurant, bar, bookstore and community gathering place. First established in 2005, Busboys and Poets was founded by owner Andy Shallal [(@andyshallal)](https://twitter.com/andyshallal), an artist, activist, and restaurateur. After opening the flagship location at 14th and V Streets, NW DC, the neighboring residents, and the progressive community embraced Busboys and Poets, particularly activists opposed to the Iraq War. Busboys and Poets is now located in nine distinctive neighborhoods in the Washington D.C Metropolitan and Baltimore areas. Busboys and Poets is a cultural hub for artists, activists, writers, thinkers, and dreamers. This is a new venue for our meetups, so please note that all accessibility information was gathered over the phone and has not been verified in person as of yet. Meetup #16: API Design & Single-Header Libraries
Meetup #16: API Design & Single-Header Libraries
This month, we're discussing API design and single-header libraries. How should we structure and program libraries to impose as few usage constraints as possible? We’ll look at [the STB libraries](https://github.com/nothings/stb) and other examples as case studies. *Note the slightly different time than usual.* We're still at the West End Library. **Agenda:** \- 1:45 \- 2:45pm: Library discussion \- 2:45pm \- whenever: Keep chatting over lunch nearby **What we do** Presentations on lower-level, foundational programming topics, ethical software, knowledge sharing, mentoring, and discussion. **Who we are:** We are all about handmade software. Rather than focus on frameworks, heavy abstractions, and buzzwords - we typically create projects or research topics that build an understanding of foundational computing concepts, essential data structures, and hardware/software interaction. **What to bring?** Bring a laptop, project, or just a curious mind. If you're not sure you're ready to contribute, don't worry: we're all here to share our passions and hone our craft. **If you arrive late:** Please enter the room quietly as to not disrupt anyone that is presenting. You can take any empty seat.

DC Winter RW '26 - Upscale Italian at TOSCA (Metro Center)
DC Winter RW '26 - Upscale Italian at TOSCA (Metro Center)
\*\*\*\* **Volunteers Needed!** Give back to the group by hosting your own smaller events (dinners, happy hours, brunches, lunches. etc). Join our Event Host program \*\*\*\* → **NEW MEMBERS or 1st TIME EVENT GO-ERS**, if you have questions about the group, RSVPs, or the overall dining event process, visit our FAQs (*ugh Meetup, we'll need to rebuild these*) and our No-Show Policy (for this event, by 12pm on Event Day). → **RSVP Cancellation Cutoff for this Event is Friday 10a, 1/23**. (Late Cancel applies after this, repeat occurrences can impact membership) \*\*\* **Winter Restaurant Week [RW] is back in DC!**: Learn more about DC's Restaurant Week ([http://www.ramw.org/restaurantweek/](http://www.ramw.org/restaurantweek/)) * Officially runs Jan 19 - 25 [some places will extend the deal beyond these dates] * 3-course fixed-price dinner special for $40 / $55 / $65 price tiers [not including drinks, and our required 30% tax / tip] → For this RW event TOSCA will be at the $65 tier, so **the minimum cost for the deal is $85** [drinks, wine/beer, and any extras items are additional and still factors our 30% tax/tip] → **By attending the event, each member agrees to participate using the Restaurant Week menu, and agree this $ minimum**. CASH PREFERRED PLEASE! \*\*\* **SPECIAL RULE for RSVPing to ANY RESTAURANT WEEK EVENT**: Lol, rule waived for this Restaurant Week period. ;) \*\*\* One of my favorite **Restaurant Week returns** in years. After not participating since 2019, **Tosca is back for DC Winter Restaurant Week 2026**, and this is a big deal. Prior to stepping away, Tosca was widely considered one of the **best Restaurant Week values in the city**, largely because they offered access to most of the regular menu rather than a heavily restricted RW subset. It’s genuinely nice to see them re-participate starting with this Winter 2026 run. **FOOD**: Tosca is an upscale Northern Italian restaurant known for clean, composed dishes, house-made pastas, and well-executed seasonal proteins. Prior to 2019, Tosca earned a strong reputation during Restaurant Week because they treated it as a true showcase, often allowing diners to order from **most of the core menu**, with only a small number of premium items carrying upcharges. That approach consistently delivered strong value and positive feedback. **Vegetarian & Gluten Free note:** * Tosca does not typically list fixed vegetarian entrées for Restaurant Week. Instead, the kitchen **curates vegetarian dishes daily using seasonal ingredients**. * Vegetarian selections may vary night to night, but the restaurant has committed to offering vegetarian options throughout Restaurant Week and has historically handled this thoughtfully. * Gluten-free pastas are available upon request. For **Winter 2026**, Tosca is returning at the **top Restaurant Week pricing tier**, with a base RW dinner price of **$65**. Expect a small number of optional premium upcharges, often items like **beef tenderloin or veal**, which many diners have historically found reasonable relative to normal menu pricing. → View Tosca’s menus: [https://www.toscadc.com/menu](https://www.toscadc.com/menu?utm_source=chatgpt.com). Only a couple of items have upcharges. **All must opt into the RW menu and priceponts** **SPACE**: Polished, contemporary, and unmistakably upscale. Tosca’s dining room feels refined and professional rather than casual. **Service leans formal**, with a traditional fine-dining pace and attentiveness. Business casual works, but many guests will be dressed more formally, especially during Restaurant Week evenings. This is a good choice if you enjoy a more classic, composed dining experience. → Visit the restaurant site: [https://www.toscadc.com/](https://www.toscadc.com/?utm_source=chatgpt.com) +++++++++ ==> Tax/Tip combo is our required 30% tax/tip policy (see the FAQs for more details). ==> Limited to 6 slots See you there! JoeN \*\*\* **CLOSEST METRO**: * **Metro Center [Red, Blue, Orange, Silver]**. Exit Metro Center toward **12th Street NW / F Street NW**. Once you come up the escalator/stairs, you will be on **F Street NW**. Walk **east on F Street NW** for **about 2 blocks** (toward 12th Street). When you reach the corner of **F Street & 12th Street NW**, you’ll see 1112 F Street. * For directions using the Metro, try using the Plan a Trip feature at the WMATA website ([click on your preferred Metro station](https://www.wmata.com/rider-guide/stations/index.cfm) then at the Station page level click "Plan a Trip". **PARKING**: No valet parking is offered. TOSCA offers **free validated parking for dinner patrons after 5 pm at the District Center Parking Garage** (West Side, in the building 555 12th St. NW) (look for One Parking) on 11th St. NW between E and F St., requiring guests to bring their parking ticket for validation. \*\*\* 1. Limited to **6** slots. 2. I**f you RSVP "YES" please make sure you can definitely make it**. With 5,800+ members and limited seating, we cannot afford no-shows. It's unfair to the other members who would like to attend and also to the organizers who have to explain to the restaurant why the reserved # of guests didn't show (can damage our reputation and ability to do larger reservations in the future). No-Show / Late Cancel rules apply (see our Discussion area on the website). 3. **Join the WAIT-LIST of you don't get an initial spot**! Use the Waitlist option. Also, check back regularly as attendees have been known to cancel up to Noon the day of the event. We may use emails during the week to confirm continued interest, so check! 4. **Billing (add 30% tax/tip to your bill)**. Remember, include the required 30% for tip / tax in addition to the food / beverages you order as defined in our FAQs. 5. **NEW MEMBERS or 1st TIME EVENT GO-ERS**, if you have questions about the group, RSVPs, or the overall dining event process, visit our FAQs ([http://diningout.meetup.com/149/messages/boards/view/viewthread?thread=1650845](http://diningout.meetup.com/149/messages/boards/view/viewthread?thread=1650845)) and our No-Show Policy ([http://tinyurl.com/5byotq](http://tinyurl.com/5byotq)).

HTML5 Master Series (Class 01 of 04) (SPECIAL OFFERING)
HTML5 Master Series (Class 01 of 04) (SPECIAL OFFERING)
**PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING IMPORTANT NOTES:** 1. The dates listed for this series are about 95% reliable. We are completing our 2026 schedule as we speak, so minor adjustments are still occurring. 2. Each class in this series has an attendance fee, though this first offering is free on a first-come, first-served basis. 3. Each class, from BOTH a sign-up and fee perspective, is a separate entity. **Introduction:** HTML5 is the foundational technology for modern web development, serving as the standard markup language for structuring and presenting content on the World Wide Web. Developed through a collaboration between the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WHATWG), HTML5 provides a robust system of elements (tags) that tell a browser how to display text, images, and multimedia in a clear and meaningful way. It works in concert with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for presentation and JavaScript for interactivity, forming the core technology stack for virtually all websites and many web applications today. One of the significant advancements of HTML5 is the introduction of powerful new features and elements designed to improve functionality and simplify development. Key additions include native multimedia support via the \ and \ tags, allowing developers to embed media without third-party plugins. It also offers new form controls for better user input, such as date and email types, and introduces web storage capabilities to store data offline for enhanced performance. These features streamline the process of building rich, interactive web experiences. A significant focus of HTML5 is enhanced semantics and better structural organization of content. New semantic elements like , , , , and \ provide meaningful structure to documents, which aids in search engine optimization (SEO) and improves accessibility for assistive technologies. These elements define different parts of a webpage (e.g., a header for the top, a nav for navigation links, a footer for the bottom), making the code more readable and understandable for both developers and machines. This emphasis on clear structure helps in creating more logical and maintainable websites. Developing websites in today's competitive environment requires taking advantage of every technique you can to get the maximum exposure possible. Our HTML5 class will not only show you what's new in the HTML specification, but also the best way to develop optimized web pages that get the attention your client and/or company requires. **The breakdown of the four-class series is as follows:** **Class 1: Introduction to Web Structure and Basic HTML5** This class introduces the core concepts of web development, the history of HTML, and the fundamental structure of an HTML5 document. * **Topics**: * **Web Architecture Overview**: How browsers, servers, and web pages interact. * **HTML Fundamentals**: Understanding elements, tags, and attributes. * **Basic Document Structure**: Using !DOCTYPE html, html, head, and body. * **Text Formatting**: Headings (h1 to h6), paragraphs (p), and text-level semantics (e.g., strong, em, br). * **Lists and Links**: Creating ordered (ol) and unordered (ul) lists, and linking between pages using anchor tags (a). * **Activity**: Students create a basic personal webpage containing text, a list of hobbies, and a link to an external website. **Class 2: Semantic HTML5 and Multimedia Integration** Class 2 focuses on modern HTML5 elements that provide meaning (semantics) to content, improving accessibility and search engine optimization. It also covers adding images and multimedia. * **Topics**: * **Semantic Elements**: Understanding and implementing elements like header, footer, nav, section, and article. * **Images**: Adding images using the img tag and attributes like src, alt, width, and height. * **Multimedia**: Embedding audio and video content using the audio and video tags. * **File and Folder Structure**: Best practices for organizing project files and managing file paths. * **Activity**: Students refactor their Class 1 project to use a proper semantic layout and add an image and a link to a video file. **Class 3: Forms and User Input** This session is dedicated to building interactive HTML5 forms, which are essential for capturing user data and input. * **Topics**: * **Form Basics**: Using the form element, action and method attributes. * **Input Types**: Exploring various input types (e.g., text, password, checkbox, radio, date, submit). * **Form Elements**: Utilizing label, textarea, select, option, and button. * **Client-side Validation**: Implementing HTML5 validation attributes like required, minlength, and pattern. * **Activity**: Students build a complete contact form with different input fields, radio buttons, and basic HTML5 validation. **Class 4: Introduction to CSS3 and Basic Styling** The final class introduces Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to style the HTML content and make the web pages visually appealing and accessible. * **Topics**: * **CSS Fundamentals**: The role of CSS, selectors, properties, and values. * **Integrating CSS**: Using inline, internal, and external style sheets. * **The Box Model**: Understanding margin, padding, border, and content for basic layout. * **Basic Styling**: Changing colors, fonts, and text alignment. * **Accessibility Basics**: Identifying principles of web design usability and accessibility, including ARIA labels. * **Activity**: Students apply an external CSS file to their Class 3 form project to style the layout, colors, and fonts, culminating in a well-structured and styled webpage.
