You must read the following NVHC Sign-in Sheet Statement/Liability Disclaimer, [https://nvhc.com/signin.pdf](https://nvhc.com/signin.pdf) and then answer the question that you will see when you RSVP with "I accept" to be permitted on the hike. **10.5 miles with 250 feet elevation gain.** ***Let's hike the recently reopened Billy Goat B trail which has been closed for several years. One of my favorite sections, I'm glad it's back!*** This is a beautiful area along the scenic C&O Canal National Historical Park towpath. This trek will include a hike on Billy Goat B & C trails with great views of the Potomac River, as well as the roaring waters of Olmsted Island and the Great Falls overlook. This route includes a very scenic section of the towpath. **Description:** We'll start our hike on Billy Goat C trail and hike until we connect with the C&O Canal towpath. We'll hike to the Tavern visitor center for lunch break before we reconnect with the towpath. and make our way to Olmsted Island and the Great Falls Overlook. We'll then resume on the towpath until we cross over the canal onto Berma Road for a short distance where we reconnect to the towpath at Angler's Inn parking area. We're back on the towpath where we will connect to Billy Goat B trail. Note: There is one stream crossing on Billy Goat B which is fairly easily crossed by stone stepping. After completing Billy Goat B, we'll then connect back to the towpath and return to the trailhead parking. The pace will be about 2.5 mph. **Bring:** Adequate water/hydration, snacks/lunch, and sturdy hiking shoes since there are some rocky areas and tree roots on both Billy Goat B & C. Restrooms are available at the Carderock Picnic Area parking lot where we start as well as at the Tavern Visitor Center. Hiking poles may be useful if you normally use them. **Trailhead:** We will meet in the Carderock Picnic Grounds parking lot in Carderock Recreation Area. Please plan on being there at 8:45am so we can get everyone signed in and start the hike on time. **Dogs are welcome.** Dog Policy [https://tinyurl.com/nvhcdogpolicy](https://tinyurl.com/nvhcdogpolicy) ***Please note: Dogs are not allowed on the Olmsted Island boardwalk, so you will have to wait while the group completes the Olmsted Island walk***. **There are no fees.** Map of Hiking Trails at Great Falls, Maryland: [https://www.nps.gov/choh/planyourvisit/upload/Great-Falls-Hiking-Map.pdf](https://www.nps.gov/choh/planyourvisit/upload/Great-Falls-Hiking-Map.pdf) **Directions to Carderock Picnic Grounds Parking at Carderock Recreation Area:** From I-495, take the exit for Clara Barton Pkwy, continue on the Pkwy until you see the exit for Carderock near the Naval Surface Warfare Center. MO W1: Catoctin Highlight Reel
MO W1: Catoctin Highlight Reel
This route takes us by many scenic landmarks in northern Maryland: Annapolis Rocks, Black Rock, Raven Rock, Cunningham Falls, Cat Rock, Chimney Rock, and Wolf Rock. The splits will be 13.75/19.75 We will meet at the Grovesnor-Strathmore kiss and ride at 7:30am, and carpool to the trailhead about an hour away, I will arrange to set up the shuttle either beforehand or on our way. We will start from the Annapolis Rocks trailhead and hike north on the AT to raven Rock shelter, stopping to see Annapolis, Black, and Raven Rocks on our way. We will settle in a Raven Rocks shelter for the night. The shelter is quite large, and there are campsites available. The next morning, we will retrace our steps back to the last road and roadwalk 2.5 miles to make the jump from the AT to the Catoctin Mountain Trail. Once there, we will hike several miles to route 77, where our cars will be, and pass them to hike the loop to Cunningham Falls, Cat Rock, Chimney Rock, Wolf Rock, and Thurmont Vista, before returning to our shuttle vehicle back near the falls. For any members who are looking to become veteran members, day two is long enough for you to graduate! Anyone looking for a shorter second day may stop at the cars when we pass on route 77, making it a less than 10 mile day. This is a W1 trip, so be prepared for winter conditions. We start out at the Workhouse Art Center and do a loop down to the Occoquan Regional Park with a visit to the Suffragist Memorial. Back at the Workhouse we follow the Cross County Trail (CCT) through the old Lorton Jail property and then do a larger loop through the northern part of Lorton and eventually loop back to the Workhouse on the Rt 123 sidepath. **Some background:** The Occoquan Workhouse in Lorton, was a jail that imprisoned hundreds of women suffragists in 1917. The prison is now part of Occoquan Regional Park, and the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial honors the women who were jailed there. HISTORY * The Occoquan Workhouse was built in 1910 as a work camp to rehabilitate prisoners through hard labor. * In 1917, the prison held dozens of suffragists who were arrested for picketing the White House. * The suffragists endured poor conditions, violence, and were locked in solitary confinement. * The suffragists' experiences helped to turn public opinion in favor of suffrage. MEMORIAL * The Turning Point Suffragist Memorial is located in Occoquan Regional Park. * It honors the women who were imprisoned at the Occoquan Workhouse. * You can learn more about the memorial and take a tour at [turningpointsuffragistmemorial.org](https://suffragistmemorial.org/). * The gate at the memorial is the original one from the White House when the suffragists protested in front of it. **++++++++++++++++++++** **The Meeting Spot:** **++++++++++++++++++++** **Workhouse Art Center (Parking Lot on the left at the entrance)** 9518 Workhouse Wy, Lorton, VA 22079 GPS: [https://maps.app.goo.gl/J7EqYBmVjL4CzaVi9](https://maps.app.goo.gl/J7EqYBmVjL4CzaVi9) (Parking lot on the left at the entrance) Bathroom available at the Start = Bunnyman Brewery.
