RIO Evening Walk/Hike Around the Lake and (lite dinner afterwards)
Meet in front of Copper Canyon by the benches.
We'll do anywhere from 3-5 laps. It's .75 miles around and we usually do 3/4 laps.
For safety reasons, we’re going to keep the group to two small groups of eight members each. It does get crowded there so we don’t want to have any mishaps.
Afterwards, if we like, we could grab a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants at the RIO
If you happen to be late, walk, counterclockwise around the lake and you should see us walking

**ABC 7 News:**
A taste of France in Virginia: New restaurant offers century-old Duck a la Presse
The Duck a la Presse reaches all the way back to France, over a century ago. The French cuisine that originated in the early 1800s in France was once usually enjoyed by France's most elite.
"Chefs would take the ducks and carve them tableside, break them down and process them through a duck press to extract the blood and juices to finish the sauce at the table.," Executive Chef Anthony DiGregorio (The Watergate Hotel, Café Boulud Palm Beach) told 7News.
However, since gaining popularity over time, the duck dish has made it's way into the states and at The Simon at Reston Station in Reston, Va.
"People are bringing back those old school cooking techniques and its the ability to do a table side and bring an experience to the guest," DiGregorio said.
The Dry aged Duck a la Presse (for 2) is a Honey lavender glazed Jurgielewicz duck, roasted red beets, foraged mushrooms, red wine poached pear, sauce civet, according to DiGregorio.
It is a multi-step process including carving, pressing tableside. The duck, which is raised at a farm in Pennsylvania, is dry-aged for about two weeks, adding flavor, texture and age onto the duck. It is then cooked in a charcoal oven.
While the Duck a la Presse has made a comeback, the price for the equipment can be pretty hefty. According to Tasting Table, duck presses, depending on the metal, can range from almost $2,200 to $4,000. For a fancier option, the French maker Ercuis produces a silver-plated Duck Press Grand Hotel that could be yours for a mere €17,600 ($18,700).
Two people can enjoy the traditional and historical dish for $126.
**Northern Virginia Magazine:**
The Simon opened September 16, unveiling a glamorous dining experience that blends global refinement with Mid-Atlantic roots. At the helm are Executive Chef Anthony DiGregorio (The Watergate Hotel, Café Boulud Palm Beach) and Executive Pastry Chef Claus Olsen (Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, The Mayfair Hotel London), who are reimagining regional cuisine with creativity and flair.
Standout dishes include dry-aged duck à la presse infused with lavender from DiGregorio’s garden, Pennsylvania golden chicken with brioche stuffing, and pan-seared local rockfish with sauce vin jaune. Dessert delights with indulgences such as a Virginia chess pie or the almond crunch bar, while a tableside cheese cart presents the largest Murray’s Cheese selection outside of New York.
“Every element of The Simon has been designed so our guests can appreciate the best of the region,” DiGregorio said in a release. “We’ve partnered with local farmers, fishers, and artisans who share our respect for the land’s bounty, and pairing that with craftsmanship, service, and storytelling, will make each dining experience memorable.”
Next door, the Schar Bar steals the spotlight with the area’s most extensive amaro collection, rare-bourbon program, inventive cocktails, as well as appealing noshes like oysters, caviar, and Appalachian sour corn hushpuppies.
Looking forward to sharing this experience with you!

Greenbelt International Folk Dancers
Friday night Greenbelt International Folk Dancing has gone "virtual".
As we all practice good social distancing, many in our folk dance community are feeling the absence of our usually scheduled local dances. In response, please join us for the Greenbelt Virtual Folk Dance Session.
Let’s keep dancing!
• Connect and dance in our own homes
• Watch hosts leading familiar dances
• See each other; listen and dance to our favorites
How: We will be using the ZOOM video conferencing app to share music and live videos of the leaders and each other. This can be used on a desktop, laptop, or smartphone.
What to Expect: Your hosts are Linda Mansdorf, Vita Hollander, Ben Hole, and John Robinson. Collectively they will play 25-30 dances, which should approximate the number of dances normally done on a Friday night in-person event. The hosts will do a quick teaching or demonstration of the steps to some of the dances that may be less familiar to you or just as a refresher, but the session is not designed as a workshop, so the majority of the evening will be spent playing dances that many of us already know and love to do.
How To Join Us: Each week we will send an email with the Zoom Meeting link ID. Make sure John Robinson knows you would like to receive this email with the link. John's email address for Info: j_srobinson@verizon.net.

Photograph One A Day 2026 (365 Project)
Let's see how many can dedicate a whole year to taking photographs each day and posting the best photo from that day.
This is a great way to improve your photography. I tried to do this a few years ago and did not complete it. Every Day take photographs and post 1 photo a day. Don't take 30 or 31 photos in 1 day and think you are done for the month! I am not assigning a theme. Be creative and choose a topic to help you find subjects.
Take photographs **Every Day** and post your best **ONE** (1) shot of the day - **EACH DAY** for the year. If you miss a day or two (life happens), it is OK to catch up and upload the photos for the missed days or skip those days.
Towards the top-right of the page are some images and a link for uploading your photo to the album. Remember to post your best photo (JUST ONE) you took every day on that day! **DO NOT POST PHOTOS FROM ANY OTHER TIME!** If you have time to post an older image, then you have time to take a new image. Be creative.
**Please Add a Caption** to know how far you are in the process. After you upload the image you took that day, find your photo at the end of the album, and edit the caption to state the day and total of days in the month like this:?/365. You can add the title of the image if you wish. A good title can make a photo! So, your photo caption for January 1st would be "1/366: My great photo!" \*\*
The end date is 12/31/2026.
I look forward to seeing how far people go and grow!

Photograph One A Day (31 Day January Project)
**The rules are simple:**
Take photographs **Each and Every Day** and post your best **ONE** (1) shot of the day - **EACH DAY** for **January**. If you happen to miss a day or two (life happens), it is **OK** to catch up and upload the photos for the days missed or just skip those days.
**Please don't post over 2 to 3 at a time**. This is part of the learning process.
**DO NOT POST TO THE ALBUM *UNTIL* AFTER 12/31/2025**.
Please use a browser like Chrome and the Meetup.com website to post the images as **the Meetup app does not handle albums very well**.
Towards the top-left of the page is a link to **Add Photos** for uploading your photo to the album. **CONFIRM** **that your photo was Added to the correct Album.** Remember to post your **best photo (JUST ONE)** you took every day each day on that day! **DO NOT POST PHOTOS FROM ANY OTHER TIME!** If you have time to post an older image, you can take a new image and post it. Be creative.
Please **add a caption** to know how far you are in the process. After you upload the image you took that day, find your photo at the end of the album, and edit the caption to state the day and total number of days in the month like this\*\*:?/**31.**\*\* You can add the title of the image if you wish. A good title can make a photo! So, your photo for the **January 1st** caption would be "**1/31: My great photo!**" \*\* Adding a caption helps you keep track of where you are in the month. It does help.
The purpose is to have fun and get in the habit of shooting every day. Learn to use your camera. Read your manual and test out a new feature you have never used before. Sometimes picking a theme/project can help focus (pun intended), like flowers, your pet(s), a lens you haven't used in a while, or whatever your passion is. Or try something new...
The **end date is 1/31/2026**. Meetup.com does not allow events to be longer than 2 weeks.
Other images that were not taken by you will be removed. Please keep the images family-friendly. You need to be a member of the Virginia Beltway Photography Group.
I look forward to seeing how far people go and grow as better photographers!

Contra dance with Big Scioty on Jan 3 - First Congregational Church
**Caller: Gaye Fifer**
**Band: Hot Coffee Breakdown**
**Big Scioty Contra Dance**
**temporarily returning to our long ago location for Jan-March - First Congregational Church, 444 E. Broad St., Columbus 43215**
WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing!
Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor.
Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 10:30. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner.
Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot.
For more information contact me or check out our website: [www.bigscioty.com](http://www.bigscioty.com/)
Please bring your own refillable water bottle. Snacks to share are always welcome!
