BOOK CLUB: 1984 šŸ‘ļø by George Orwell with Jakarta Writers
BOOK CLUB: 1984 šŸ‘ļø by George Orwell with Jakarta Writers
Hello, Jakarta Writer! **Are you a member of [Jakarta Friends](https://www.meetup.com/jakarta-friends/) yet?** Want to see **pictures** of past events? **[Take a look here!](https://www.meetup.com/jakarta-creatives/photos/)** And feel free to upload a few pictures you might take at the event 😊 JakWri (former Jakarta Writers) and JakFri is **the** biggest, oldest, most active, and most inclusive MeetUp community in Jakarta… and we invite you to join us for this **BOOK CLUB discussing "1984" šŸ‘ļø by George Orwell!** Everyone is always welcome to join our events. Our community is all about creating authentic in-person connections in this urban jungle. Come as you are... it’s the best version of yourself. **ABOUT THE EVENT** The idea is very simple: we will meet and discuss the book. Everyone will receive a copy of the book as PDF beforehand **for free** (which we kindly ask not to share with everyone - this book discussion is for educational purposes). Reach out to the host to receive the PDF, and feel free to ask any question in the discussion section of the event page. Everyone is encouraged to read the short book (in English, about 300 pages) beforehand to participate to the discussion. Coming without having read the book is possible, but just half the fun. The host will give a short introduction about the book and guide through the discussion, which will be very informal and fun. Everyone is encouraged to share their thoughts and ask questions. This event is **introvert friendly**! No one will be put on the spot or forced to speak. Just join and share your passion for literature, no matter how much you read. This is a dream event for anyone who wishes to take a deep dive into literature and have a fun, social lunch time. Our book club will be in English. Everyone's English level is OK as this is a nice occasion to practice English in an informal and welcoming setting. **ABOUT THE BOOK** What else is there to be said about 1984 other than its immense cultural, political, and philosophical impact on the planet. In a superstate where the totalitarian authority reigns supreme under the omnipresent gaze of Big Brother, Winston Smith, a minor functionary in the Ministry of Truth, is tasked with altering historical records to align with the Party's narrative. Will his dangerous search for truth and personal autonomy triumph over the regime's suffocating propaganda? A chilling and foundational must-read that's more important than ever in the modern age. Discover more about the book [on Goodreads](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/61439040-1984)! **We have had several Book Clubs before! Writing Workshop: Craft the perfect LOGLINE for your story šŸ“ with Jak Writers
Writing Workshop: Craft the perfect LOGLINE for your story šŸ“ with Jak Writers
Hello, Jakarta Writer! **Are you a member of [Jakarta Friends](https://www.meetup.com/jakarta-friends/) yet?** Want to see **pictures** of past events? **[Take a look here!](https://www.meetup.com/jakarta-creatives/photos/)** And feel free to upload a few pictures you will take at the event 😊 JakWri (former Jakarta Creatives) and JakFri is **the** oldest, biggest, most active, and most inclusive MeetUp community in Jakarta… and we invite you to join us for this **Writing Workshop: How to craft the perfect LOGLINE for your story! šŸ“** Everyone is always welcome to join our events. Our community is all about creating authentic in-person connections in this urban jungle. Come as you are... it’s the best version of yourself. This workshop have limited seats available. Reserve your spot today! **ABOUT THE EVENT** *One line. 20 Seconds. A sentence that captures immediately the imagination of your audience.* **But... How to do that?!** A logline is one sentence that describes your story... in the best possible way. Pitching, amongst other things, has always been one of the toughest things about getting one's story off the ground. How do you summarize tens of thousands of words, weeks of writing, months of toiling, and defeat self-doubt into a short and memorable logline? And once your story is out there in the world, a logline will help draw the "right" audience to your story. Finding the essence of the story, rediscovering the protagonist's goals & struggles, and endeavoring for a fresh, iconic angle, we'll learn about the industry-standard formula for pitching your story. We will share ways to make your logline stand out in a sea of stories. In this presentation, the host will explain his writing approach, his experience working with filmmakers and narrative-designers to explore the world of story-telling within the confines of professional storytelling. A focus will be on screenwriting and movies, but **what you will learn today will be applicable to all forms of writing and storytelling**, whether you are writing a novel, a collection of poems, non-fiction, essays, or anything else! In essence, this workship will help you distill the core of the story in one sentence... the logline! And there is more to it! In the second part of this workshop, everyone will have time to draft, hone, and share their logline with a peer of supportive writers to discuss and improve together! The host will guide everyone through the art of crafting loglines and we'll workshop our own loglines—outside perspectives are valuable inputs in helping sculpt and trim the fat! There's no set literature or resources for the discussion, however, the host will be loosely referring to tenets from these works: * The Writer's Journey by Christopher Vogler * Story - Substance, Structure, Style, and the Principles of Screenwriting by Robert McKee * Save the Cat! by Blake Snyder A writing journey can be a ton of fun, profitable, and something inspiring other writers to find their own path to success. The 45-minute presentation will be followed by Q&A and discussion, then by a 60-90 minutes workshop & discussion of our own loglines! This event belongs to the series of "How to" workshops related to writing we have had before: * [Introduction to SCREENWRITING for FILM & TV šŸŽžļøšŸæ with Jakarta Creatives](https://www.meetup.com/jakarta-writers/events/311945504/?utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=share-btn_savedevents_share_modal&utm_source=link&utm_version=v2&member_id=428578398) * [How to SELF-PUBLISH & build an AUDIENCE as a writer šŸ’ŖšŸ‘ with Jakarta Creatives](https://www.meetup.com/jakarta-creatives/events/311773715/) * [ABC of CROWDFUNDING (Workshop) šŸ¤‘šŸ’°šŸ˜Ž How to fund your WRITING PROJECTS! ](https://www.meetup.com/jakarta-creatives/events/310560709/) **ABOUT THE VENUE** **NOI Coffee & Kitchen** is a cozy and hospitable cafe located in the strategic Tebet highway in the TIS Square. There's both smoking and non-smoking areas. * Let's meet directly there. The host will be seated on large tables for the group. Most likely on the 2nd floor. * Here is a link to the venue for more information: https://www.instagram.com/noicoffeeandkitchen/ * We encourage you to reach the event by public transportation. A Busway Station is just a 10-minute walk! **ABOUT THE HOSTS** **Benjamin Bernard Chenier** is an Indonesian filmmaker and screenwriter graduated from the Vancouver Film School's Screenwriting specialization, currently working in the Indonesian film and tv industry. An aspiring writer, Ben's first tv screenwriting venture went and found a place on Netflix—find "Dendam" (2024) starring Cinta Laura and other prominent actors. He is currently working on numerous projects and a future cinematic release. He will be helping introduce us into the film industry and the format of screenwriting. **Corrado Nai** has a Ph.D. in microbiology and writes mostly about science. His words has been published in *Smithsonian Magazine*, *New Scientist,* *Asimov Press*, *Small Things Considered*, and many more. Currently he's writing [a graphic novel about agar-agar's surprising role in science](https://fanny-hesse-graphic-novel.site/), called "The Dessert That Changed the World" which can be followed and supported on Patreon at [https://www.patreon.com/corradonai](https://www.patreon.com/corradonai) **HOW TO REGISTER TO THE EVENT?** To register, just click ā€œAttendā€! Welcome, readers! Our March read is **_The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver._** The story follows Taylor Greer, a young woman from rural Kentucky who leaves home for the West, only to find herself unexpectedly becoming the guardian of an abused Native American toddler named Turtle. In Tucson, Arizona, they form a makeshift family with a diverse group of people, including Guatemalan refugees and a single mother, exploring themes of motherhood, community, belonging, and finding hope in hardship. The story blends humor with serious issues, creating a story about finding family in unexpected places. Looking forward to discussing with everyone! We will meet at Zaftig Brewing Co in their event room in the back. We are welcome to bring in our own food, but **drinks must be purchased at the bar.** Happy reading! šŸ“–

Welcome, readers! Our April read is **_Martyr!_ by Kaveh Akbar.** The story follows a young Iranian American poet grappling with grief, addiction, and the aching question of what makes a life meaningful. Drawn into an unexpected friendship with a terminally ill artist, he begins to confront faith, love, and the seduction of self-destruction. Lyrical, darkly funny, and emotionally piercing, the novel wrestles with beauty and despair in equal measure. It’s a story about longing—to be seen, to be forgiven, and to matter. Looking forward to discussing with everyone! We will meet at Zaftig Brewing Co in their event room in the back. We are welcome to bring in our own food, but **drinks must be purchased at the bar.** Happy reading! šŸ“–

Bad Girls Book Club March 2026
Bad Girls Book Club March 2026
**Our March pick is *God of the Woods* by Liz Moore.** **This month’s novel is an award-winning literary mystery that blends family drama with psychological suspense. It explores women’s voices and relationships while delivering an exciting, eerie, and deeply suspenseful story. The book is 576 pages in print or 14 hours and 35 minutes on audiobook.** Early morning, August 1975: a camp counselor discovers an empty bunk. Its occupant, Barbara Van Laar, has gone missing. Barbara isn’t just any thirteen-year-old: she’s the daughter of the family that owns the summer camp and employs most of the region’s residents. And this isn’t the first time a Van Laar child has disappeared. Barbara’s older brother similarly vanished fourteen years ago, never to be found. As a panicked search begins, a thrilling drama unfolds. Chasing down the layered secrets of the Van Laar family and the blue-collar community working in its shadow, Moore’s multi-threaded story invites readers into a rich and gripping dynasty of secrets and second chances. It is Liz Moore’s most ambitious and wide-reaching novel yet.
