Learn to Meditate: Craving, Clinging and Letting Go
Buddha taught that much of our stress and dissatisfaction comes from craving—the restless urge for things to be different—and clinging, our habit of holding tightly to people, experiences, and outcomes. When life inevitably changes, this grasping leads to frustration, anxiety, and pain.
In this series, Noreen Flack will share Buddhist teachings on craving and attachment, and learn practical methods for letting go without becoming passive or indifferent.
Each class offers a teaching, contemplation and guided meditation to help us discover how to cultivate inner freedom, emotional balance, and a more spacious relationship with our life as it is.
$12 regular, $6 students/seniors, free for members

Foundations of Meditation: A Full-Day Retreat
**Note: Due to demand of this event, priority spots will be given to regulars. Consistent no shows may be removed from the RSVP list. Please be mindful of the space you're taking ❤️**
This is a complete day devoted to building a stable, grounded meditation practice. **You can come for half, or the full day.**
Many people experience moments of clarity or stillness but struggle to stabilize them. This retreat is designed to address that gap by focusing on the foundations of meditation: attention, posture, nervous system regulation, and continuity of practice.
This retreat is strongly recommended before attending our non-dual or awakening-oriented sessions.
**RETREAT STRUCTURE**
The day is divided into two sessions.
You may attend one session or both.
**Session 1**: Morning Practice (9:00 AM – 12:00 PM)
* Opening orientation and foundational instruction
* Silent seated meditation (20-minute sits)
* Walking meditation
* Gentle stretching / mindful movement
* Time for meditation questions
**Session 2:** Afternoon Practice (1:00 PM – 5:00 PM)
* Re-orientation and refresher instruction
* Continued silent meditation cycles
* Walking meditation
* Stretching and integration
* Open Q&A focused on stabilizing practice
**MEDITATION FORMAT**
* 20-minute seated meditation periods
* Alternating with walking meditation and gentle movement
* Silence maintained during practice periods
* Clear instruction at the beginning of each session
* Dedicated time for questions and clarification
This is a structured, supportive container — not a drop-in meditation.
**WHO THIS IS FOR**
* New meditators who want a solid foundation
* Experienced practitioners who want to stabilize their practice
* Anyone planning to attend non-dual or awakening-focused sessions
* Those comfortable with silence and structure
**WHO THIS IS NOT FOR**
* People looking for a casual or social meditation
* Those seeking peak experiences or altered states
* Anyone currently feeling ungrounded or emotionally unstable
**RECOMMENDED CONTRIBUTION**
Recommended contribution: $50 (half day) – $100 (full day)
This retreat is offered on a contribution basis to keep it accessible while honoring the time, structure, and depth of the practice. Please choose an amount within the range that feels aligned.
You can make a tax deductible contribution at: venmo.com/meditationcommunty or MeditationCommunity.org
**WHAT TO BRING**
Comfortable clothing
Water bottle
Light lunch or snacks (if staying all day)
Meditation cushion, bench, or pillow **(necessary)**
**AGREEMENTS**
Silence during meditation periods
Respect for the container and other participants
No teaching or advising other attendees
This retreat is about learning how to sit, stay, and stabilize — so clarity has somewhere to land.

FEBRUARY -- Zone One 🧟🏙️🚧 (Celebrating Black History Month)
***Zone One* by Colson Whitehead** (2011)
Mark Spitz, a civilian sweeper assigned to reclaim Manhattan after a catastrophic pandemic, spends his days moving block by block through the remaining infected zones, clearing out the last remnants of the outbreak so society can attempt to begin again.
As he navigates abandoned streets, stalled skyscrapers, and the echoes of his former life, the work becomes both routine and reckoning. Over the course of several days, memories surface and the fragile boundary between what was lost and what remains begins to blur, revealing how difficult it is to rebuild a world that refuses to stay buried.
**Colson Whitehead** is an acclaimed American author known for blending literary craft with sharp social insight across genres. His work often reimagines history and speculative scenarios to explore race, memory, power, and American identity, earning him multiple major awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes. He’s widely admired for taking familiar forms and quietly bending them into something stranger, smarter, and more unsettling.
**Themes to Keep in Mind While Reading (Non-Spoiler)**
1. **Memory as Survival**
How do memories shape the way characters experience the present, and when do they help survival versus quietly undermine it?
2. **Routine After Catastrophe**
What does the return of routines and procedures suggest about how people adapt to life after the world has fundamentally changed?
3. **Rebuilding vs. Repeating**
Does the effort to rebuild point toward meaningful change, or does it risk recreating the same structures and assumptions that existed before?
**Before the event …**
* **Read the book. 🤩**
* **Keep your RSVP up-to-date.** If you can't make it out, update your RSVP at least 24 hours beforehand. Attendance will be taken and "No Show"s marked.
**At the event …**
* **We’re a friendly welcoming bunch and we love new folks!** 😍
* **Please purchase something (even if just a soda) while you’re at the restaurant.** They’re running a business but being super awesome by giving us a space to meet for free. Also, please tip our servers. We’re a big bunch to wrangle.

Spa for Your Soul: A Sacred Pause for Renewal and Wholeness
Join us at **Unity of Columbus** for *Spa for Your Soul*, a restorative and inspiring workshop designed to nourish your spirit, awaken your inner wisdom, and reconnect you with the sacred rhythm of life.
Drawing from the rich spiritual insights of **Matthew Fox** and the timeless theological wisdom of **Thomas Aquinas**, this workshop invites participants into a deeper experience of spirituality rooted in compassion, creativity, and divine presence. Together, we will explore spirituality not as something distant or abstract, but as a lived, embodied experience—one that honors joy, justice, beauty, and the inherent goodness of creation.
Through guided reflection, gentle spiritual practices, discussion, and contemplative moments, *Spa for Your Soul* offers a sacred space to release stress, renew clarity, and remember the divine spark within. This is an opportunity to pause, breathe, and tend lovingly to your soul—much like a spa experience, but for your inner life.
Whether you are seeking spiritual refreshment, deeper understanding, or simply a peaceful space to be present, this workshop welcomes you exactly as you are.
**Come, rest, reflect, and renew—your soul deserves it.**
