Expressions of Interest - Tramping New Zealand - Summer 2026
Hi All
Having recently led a group of 9 in completing the Overland Track in Tasmania, I’m looking to expand my horizons and do my first international hike. Not too far, but thinking across the ditch to do some world class walks in New Zealand’s Southern Island. I’m very keen on the following Great Walks.
1. **Milford Track** \- Billed as ‘the finest walk in the world' \- Take a journey along valleys carved by glaciers\, wander through ancient rainforests and admire cascading waterfalls\. You’ll follow a historic route through Fiordland National Park\, part of Te Wāhipounamu – South West New Zealand World Heritage Area\, before reaching your final destination\, the spectacular Milford Sound/Piopiotahi\.
53.5km over 4 days/3 nights and staying in huts along the way.
Hut Fees: $390 (2025 price)
For further Information: [https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/fiordland/places/fiordland-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/milford-track/](https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/fiordland/places/fiordland-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/milford-track/)
2. **Routeburn Track** – The Routeburn Track is the ultimate alpine adventure, taking you through ice-carved valleys and below the majestic peaks of the Southern Alps/ Kā Tiritiri o te Moana. A short trip from bustling Queenstown, this Great Walk links Mount Aspiring and Fiordland National Parks in Te Wāhipounamu – South West New Zealand World Heritage Area. Weaving through meadows, reflective tarns and alpine gardens, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular vistas over vast mountain ranges and valleys.
33km over 3 days.
Hut Fees: $240 (2025 price)
For further Information: [https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/fiordland/places/fiordland-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/routeburn-track/](https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/fiordland/places/fiordland-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/routeburn-track/)
Backup option if one of these sells out could be the Kepler Track. 3 days, 60Km loop track. $240 NZD.
Note that both of these hikes can be taken leaving Queenstown and I am envisaging a rest day in Queenstown between hikes to rest, recover, restock and sleep before the second hike,
**Bookings for the Great Walks** go on sale for the Routeburn on the 22nd of May and Milford on the 28th May. I will be on-line to make the group bookings as soon as the bookings open and will do my best to secure the bookings as discussed above. I’m hoping to make a group booking for around 10 people on these dates, so if intending in coming I will need payment for the hut fees by the 20th May. An exact itinerary will be worked out once the huts are booked, although I am thinking of including a 2 night stay in Queenstown between hikes to rest, recuperate, eat and restock.
**Approximate Major Cost:** $1854 - $2500
Refer to attached image showing price discovery as at 14/04/2025. Note this is just to give an idea on costs, actual costs will vary with exchange rates and also we may be able to organize group booking discounts etc. Also will depend upon accommodation and flights options to be discussed and considered as a group.
I've assumed an early flight (6am, cheapest @ $375) and three nights budget accommodation in Queenstown. Happy to reconsider these options after further discussion with those that sign-up. Volunteers to help research/organize these options would also be awesome - divide and conquer so they say! Also expect bookings for Flights, Travel Accommodation to be organized via the Whatsapp group throughout June/July. I’m not sure if things will book out, so we will book early, as a group to make sure everything runs smoothly. Further payments will therefore be required as we organize these together.
**Dates of Travel:** I understand that the ideal time to hike these tracks is in February, so my intention is to make the hut booking for Late February, Early March 2026. Exact dates to be confirmed once huts are locked in. Effort will be taken to avoid NZ school and public holidays.
**Training and Lead-up Practice Hikes:** As with the Overland track I will organize a series of practice hikes in the months leading up to this hike. These will usually be scheduled for the first weekend of each month from Oct through to February and will be at destinations around Victoria, such as Wilsons Prom, Great Ocean Walk (partial) , Great South West Walk (partial), Grampians etc. ***If signing up for the New Zealand hike you must commit to coming to at least some of these lead-up hikes.*** This is to ensure that you have the right equipment, fitness level and attitude to make the New Zealand hike an enjoyable experience for everyone.
**[Medical cover](https://www.comparethemarket.com.au/travel-insurance/medical-only/):** Australia and New Zealand have a [Reciprocal Health Care Agreement](https://www.comparethemarket.com.au/travel-insurance/reciprocal-health-care-agreement/) with each other, and will typically cover emergency medical treatment. Additional Travel Insurance may be considered.
**To Register Your Interest:**
1. RSVP to this event in the meetup app, and
2. **IMPORTANT**: Join the following Whatsapp group created specifically to organizing this trip: [https://chat.whatsapp.com/H6T2pTK6e7c3LZJXGLQgFH](https://chat.whatsapp.com/H6T2pTK6e7c3LZJXGLQgFH)
3. **IMPORTANT**: Numbers are limited to approx. 10 people. These will be the first 10 people who confirm their intention to attend and who transfer me the money to be part of the group booking for huts. This needs to be done before the 20th May,
**Cancelations:** Everyone will book their own flights, so cancellations for flights will be as per airline policy. I do suggest that we all travel together on the same flight. A number of group bookings will be made, including for the huts, and possibly also for accommodation and busses etc. If you are unable to attend every effort will be made to find a replacement and/or to organize refunds where possible, but this may not be possible if cancellations are made within the last month.
**Questions:** Please post questions via the comments here, or to the Whatsapp group shown above.
Look forward to some of your company on a new hiking adventure in 2026!
Cheers
Stephen Hallyburton

Volleyball Training and Games - Intermediate - B Level (SNHC)
Welcome to Melbourne Volleyball Academy! 🤗
**[[WHAT]]**
This session will be broken into 2 halves, 1st half is training and the 2nd half is games. Please arrive on time as we will start exactly at 5:30 PM.
Our intention is to have this training be the 'next step' after our beginner-level training at North Melbourne Community Centre.
We will be focusing on learning what specific roles on the court entail, improving 'volleyball IQ', breaking bad habits, and building better techniques.
**[[WHERE]]**
The session will be held as State Netball Hockey centre.
Please enter via the main entrance (the entrance with the larger parking lot), we will be on Court 3 & 4, please ask the person at the front desk if you need directions.
**[[WHO]]**
The training is intended for social volleyball players at the intermediate level or 'B' level (for more details on volleyball levels, please visit our site here: https://melbournevolleyballacademy.com.au/skill-levels-explained).
Players are expected to:
* pass freeballs and serve receive consistently
* have some knowledge of 5-1 (1 setter all around) or 6-2 (back row setter only) systems
* help others and have good sportsmanship
If you are a high intermediate (BB) or advanced player (A) you are more than welcome to join but you may find our open play sessions for BB/A level players more suitable.
For players that are at the beginner level, we suggest attending our training on Fridays at North Melbourne Community Centre 6-9PM as beginners may find the drills and level of play too difficult.
Players will be asked to attend a different session if their play is deemed unsafe or if they are not of the appropriate skill level.
**[[HOW MUCH]]**
$21 card payment will be collected on the day via square (EFTPOS) payment.
**[[WHEN]]**
The stadium is booked for 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM. However, feel free to come early and stretch as the stadium is open earlier.
**Last-minute dropouts and no-shows will have a zero-tolerance policy going forward.**
All players are expected to **update their RSVP at least 24 hours** in advance if they are unable to attend. This applies to players on the going list and the waitlist.
**[[THINGS TO BRING]]**
We ask that you bring:
* Water bottle
* Appropriate footwear for indoor court shoes - netball shoes, volleyball shoes, or basketball shoes would be suitable.
* Wear contacts or sports glasses if possible.

Only those on the “going” list are permitted to play. If you are on the waitlist, or not registered at all, you will not be permitted to play.

Flash Lighting: Introduction to Flash (using speedlights)
This is a 2.5-hour outdoor walk/workshop to give you confidence in using your speedlight flash on-camera. I'll teach you the basic principles and some cool flash tricks. There's so much more to flash lighting than ugly pop-up flash...
At first glance, flash lighting appears to break some of the rules of exposing a photo. This session explains why flash is different and covers the basic tricks that make flash a fascinating creative tool for a photographer.
Topics covered:
• TTL metering and flash exposure compensation
• camera sync speed
• basic principles: use of aperture and shutter speed
• blending flash and ambient light sources
• using flash with movement
• creative flash effects
• using speedlight zoom control
• bouncing flash off surfaces - indoor and outdoor
I will take a couple of minutes to explain each concept and then give you a specific exercise with suggested camera settings so that you can try it for yourself. As with my "available light" ( http://photos.gilliver.net/teaching/workshops/night-portraits ) walk, you'll be pairing up to take photos of each other.
This is the first in a series of 3 sessions on lighting with flash.
This walk has been designed for photographers who have a speedlight-style flash (eg. Canon 430EX/580EX/600EX, Nikon SB700/800/900/910/5000, Godox TT685/V860/V1 etc) that you "bolt on" to the top of your camera. A number of the set exercises can be done with pop-up flash but some are speedlight-specific. The concepts taught apply to both DSLR and mirrorless camera systems.
The main flash features required are the ability to control the flash power level manually and the ability to swivel the flash head in different directions. Tripods, light stands, umbrellas and remote triggering systems are not required on this walk - this session does not discuss off-camera flash.
I recommend bringing a general purpose zoom lens for this session. For example, a 24-70mm, 17-55mm, 24-105mm etc. Please ensure that both your camera and flash have freshly charged batteries and your camera has a blank memory card. You won't need a tripod.
This session is best suited to photographers who are comfortable with camera concepts such as film speed/ISO, shutter speed, aperture and white balance but have no understanding of their flash beyond knowing how to turn it on/off.
As this event is outdoors after dark, please ensure you have warm clothing and if rain is forecast, bring an umbrella (although the session runs mostly undercover if rain is about).
If you are interested in this walk but are not able to attend this date, feel free to leave a comment with your preferred time/date.
If you are having difficulties making payment via Meetup, you can go direct to Paypal ( https://www.paypal.com.au ) and make payment to "david@gilliver.net". Make sure you include a note indicating which session you're making payment for so that I can set your RSVP correctly. Payment in advance is preferred for my sessions.

Some feedback from previous sessions...
"It was one of the best training educational sessions I have been to for a long time - simply presented, indepth, but well pitched. I had a lot of fun and learnt so much!" - Sean, April 2021
"Thank you so much David. What an eye opener. Taught me so much about flash photography in 2 1/2 hours. Highly recommend the class." - David, March 2018
"This is an amazing course, packed with lots of valuable technical information, David took the time to explain every single concept and demonstrate it with a practical exercise, this is a must do course for whoever wants to start with flash photograph !!! Really worth it." - Oscar, October 2016
"I'm studying a Diploma of Photo Imaging and was struggling to grasp flash. Until yesterday's session. David explained things in a way that made sense. The exercises clearly demonstrated why and how flash works. David made sure I understood each concept before we moved on to the next. He provided notes to reinforce the message after the session and even had spare batteries for power-hungry flash units. I was lucky enough to be the only person in his session last night and was grateful for the one-to-one tuition. Thanks David!" - Emma, January 2016
"This is the best value photography course I've ever done (and I've done plenty online and in real life)! David was incredibly professional and is actually an excellent teacher ... a skill that is hard to come by. He presented each new concept in a structured way before building on what had just been learned. The whole night was full of practical examples in a beautiful location overlooking the city lights. I went back to work the following week full of confidence to take excellent pictures to use on the company website. I cannot recommend David highly enough! Thank you David - I'll be back for another course soon." - Michelle, June 2015
Find Your Personality Match - Make Friends (30 -50yrs)
🌟 **A new one-on-one, personality-based connection experience**

Philosophy Roundtable: Work in the AI Age
Please join us this Sunday as we discuss work, labour, machines and the good life. Ilya will be leading this session. It's a big topic and we are likely to continue talking about it next Sunday.
**We will meet at the Queensberry Hotel, 593 Swanston Street, Carlton (100m north of previous location) at 2pm for a 2:15pm start sharp.**
**We kindly ask attendees to pay $5 to attend to help with MeetUp costs & venue costs. This is not mandatory, but if you are a regular member it would be appreciated. Any extra moneys will go towards buying food and drinks for the table. The venue also expects us to spend money as a group, so grateful if everyone could buy a drink from the venue.**
There is no pre-requisite preparation necessary, nor a philosophical background, all that is required is a curious mind. These discussions are both a Socrates Cafe style discussion and lively metaphysical dojo, in the spirit of learning and friendly debate, so please feel free to challenge assumptions and be prepared to have your own assumptions challenged.
Find below some questions to consider, however these are free-ranging events and the below serve as a springboard for the discussion:
**Why we work**
1\. If there was no economic necessity – would you still choose to work?
2\. Would you do similar work to what you currently do or something else?
3\. What is “work” as opposed to leisure or other activity?
4\. Is doing work essential to living a ‘Good Life’?
5\. Do you feel guilty when not working?
6\. Is becoming competent at a profession important for identity formation?
**Paradox of productivity**
7\. Why is it that no matter how much the economy is industrialised and automated\, there have always been enough new jobs created to keep unemployment low?
8\. In 1930\, the prominent economist John Maynard Keynes predicted that within 100 years technological improvements would result in a 15\-hour work week\. Why hasn’t this happened?
9\. We live in a society where much has been simplified to ‘a click of a button’\, yet why do we feel busier than ever?
10\. Has the removal of bottlenecks caused us to live at a more frenetic pace?
11\. Does difficulty and friction create meaning? Do resistance and constraint force us to slow down and better appreciate life?
**Work in my backyard**
12\. To what degree does work \(and associated competition\) function as a necessary ‘sorting mechanism’ for status and resources?
13\. Competition for many jobs – especially those that are prestigious \- is increasingly global\. Has it become harder for people who want a ‘normal’ job \(and the good life\)?
14\. How does the globalisation of work affect how we see the ‘relevant moral community’\, such as between Australia and developing nations?
15\. Is globalised work a trend towards greater justice or injustice?
**Augmented Indolence?**
16\. While the advent of every technology introduced thus far has not reduced human labour in aggregate\, with AI will it finally be different this time?
17\. If AI replaces numerous types of jobs wholesale\, what new work may be created \(or greatly expanded\) for humans to do?
18\. If aggregate human labour was drastically reduced\, is it more likely that people will feel liberated from economic necessity\, or beset by a crisis of meaning?
19\. What is worse – a life of constant work\, or no work at all?
Hope to see you there!

Confidence in Bloom: How Creativity Builds Confidence
**Confidence in Bloom: How Creativity Builds Confidence**
What happens when creativity becomes an intentional practice?
In this month’s Confidence Lab, we’ll gather at **Petals That Inspire: The Flourish Studio** for an evening exploring the connection between creativity and confidence. How making with our hands, engaging our senses, and allowing space for expression can shift how we see ourselves and what we believe is possible.
Our featured speaker, **Amanda Lorenzetti**, owner of Petals That Inspire, will share how creativity has shaped her own confidence journey and why creative environments play such a powerful role in well-being, resilience, and personal growth. Drawing from her work leading an experience-driven floral studio and a community-centered workforce development program, Amanda will reflect on creativity as both a personal and collective catalyst.
Amanda will also guide us through a **hands-on floral design experience**, creating a fresh arrangement in a wide mouth mason jar. No prior floral experience is needed, just curiosity and a willingness to engage the process.
This evening is an invitation to slow down, create, and reconnect with the part of yourself that grows through care, attention, and imagination. You’ll leave with a floral arrangement to take home, and a deeper understanding of how confidence can be cultivated through creative practices.
**Featured Speaker: Amanda Lorenzetti**
Amanda Lorenzetti is the owner and founder of [Petals That Inspire](https://www.petalsthatinspire.com/) and The Flourish Studio, a social enterprise florist based in Columbus, Ohio. She brings more than a decade of experience in wedding and event sales, paired with hands-on expertise in floral and event design.
Amanda’s connection to the floral industry began early, spending time alongside her godmother, a professional florist on the East Coast.
After earning her business degree, she returned to her hometown in Connecticut to work as a floral and event designer, blending creative artistry with strong operational and client-focused skills.
In 2020, Amanda returned to the floral industry with a renewed purpose, driven by a desire to build a business rooted in creativity, community impact, and sustainability. During this pivotal time, she founded Petals That Inspire—an innovative floral concept that reimagines the traditional florist model by combining event florals, workshops, and experiential offerings with a mission-centered approach to workforce development.
Today, Petals That Inspire is a thriving social enterprise known for its thoughtful design, educational experiences, and commitment to empowering young adults facing barriers to entry in the workforce. Amanda is deeply passionate about building businesses that are both profitable and purpose-driven, and she leverages her strong business acumen to create a scalable & sustainable model that inspires creativity while giving back to the community.
