Observability Sidequests, AI prompt workflows and debugging Kubernetes Clusters
Join us for presentations, snacks, and discussion! This time around we have an agenda of monitoring topics on the complete opposite spectrum. We'll talk about pure hobbyist monitoring topics, AI prompt based workflows and debugging your production Kubernetes clusters when they are on fire.
**Special thanks to Nokia and Mark Prosser for hosting us at their downtown office.**
**Agenda:**
6:00-6:15 PM: Arrivals and introductions
6:15-6:35 PM: Observability Sidequests
6:35-6:40 PM: Q&A
6:40-7:10 PM: Uh, is this a good idea? Examining the viability of reusable AI prompt-based workflows for developers
7:10-7:15 PM: Q&A
7:15-7:35 PM: Debugging your Kubernetes Cluster when it's on fire.
7:35-7:40 PM: Q&A
7:40-8:00 PM: Q&A, networking and wrap up
**Talk 1: Observability Sidequests! - Eldin from Grafana**
Eldin will demo some of his personal use dashboards, like monitoring his 3D printer and household CO2 and temperature sensors.
**Eldin** helps people make sense of their systems through better observability. He's spent years in support, services, and advisory roles, so he knows what it really takes to make tech work in the real world. These days, he's all about helping teams solve modern observability challenges and systems that actually make life easier.
**Talk 2: Uh, is this a good idea? Examining the viability of reusable AI prompt-based workflows for developers - Adriana - Dynatrace**
It’s tempting to throw AI onto everything we do these days. But do we have to?
Can we be lazy enough to tell our AI assistant to set up our local developer tooling for us with just some well-constructed prompts, without having to rely on our platform engineering friends?
Can we achieve the Star Trek dream of saying, “Computer, run level 10 diagnostic.” and the computer would just know? And could it be repeatable and shareable?
This talk explores the developer's journey of creating a natural-language, reusable prompt-based workflow with Block's Codename Goose to provision a local development environment.
Attendees will learn about:
\* MCP and Goose
\* The target demo workflow
\* Challenges faced, and key takeaways
Attendees will also come away with an understanding of the possibilities and limits of creating reusable prompt-based workflows, answering the question: can developers self-provision tools using natural language? And just because they CAN, SHOULD THEY?
**Adriana Villela** is a blogger, host of the Geeking Out podcast, CNCF Ambassador, and maintainer of the OpenTelemetry End User SIG. By day, she focuses on Observability and OpenTelemetry, as a Principal Developer Advocate at Dynatrace. By night, she climbs walls. She also loves capybaras, because they make her happy.
**Talk 3: Debugging your Kubernetes Cluster when it's on fire - Nikola Grcevski - Grafana**
Imagine you have a Kubernetes cluster that’s hosting some number of services, perhaps these services are written in different programming languages, perhaps there are some databases in the cluster too. Now, imagine that this cluster is intermittently experiencing errors and it’s not easy to tell what’s going on.
In this talk I will show you how you can add detailed telemetry immediately to a problematic production environment cluster, without any changes to your existing cluster configuration or applications, with the new OpenTelemetry eBPF Instrumentation project. We’ll show you how you’ll be able to get insights into what’s wrong with your cluster or services, by leveraging on-demand distributed traces and connectivity graphs, even if it’s the first time you have heard the term OpenTelemetry.
**Nikola Grcevski** has worked as a software engineer for more than 20 years, mostly in the field of compilers, managed runtimes and performance optimization. Most recently he's working on low level application instrumentation with eBPF at Grafana Labs.

2D Design and Laser Cutting - Two night class - SPECIAL REGISTRATION LINK
ADDITIONAL SPOTS AVAILABLE - [CLICK HERE](Laser cutting Mon-Tue Feb 9-10 https://anc.ca.apm.activecommunities.com/richmondhill/activity/search/detail/139938?onlineSiteId=0&from_original_cui=true)
(We have to hold some spots for City of Richmond Hill!)
**Two night class - Mon Feb 9 and Tuesday Feb 10 2026**
18 YEARS AND UP ONLY.
Come out to the maker space and learn how to use 2D CAD software to engrave and cut materials like wood, plexiglass and fibreboard to make 2D and 3D shapes using our 90W laser cutter with a 24" x 36" bed. You'll get to create and cut your own graduation plaque!
The class will be over two nights - Monday Feb 9 and Tuesday Feb 10 2026, from 7 PM to 10:00 PM each night.
FOR BOTH NIGHTS, you will need to bring:
* Your own laptop - Windows, preferably, because we've tested all the software on there. MAC version works but be warned that our instructors are useless with Macs. The one person who loaded the Linux version had problems because his system was not recognising the scroll wheel on the mouse.
* You will need to pre-load the CAD software.[ Download it from here. ](https://qcad.org/en/download) You need the Pro Trial version.
* A USB memory stick for transferring your designs to the laser cutter
* A mouse with a scroll wheel. Trust us - the CAD program works better with it.
MONDAY night: 2D design using QCAD
After reviewing several programs, we picked QCAD because:
* It's free
* It's downloadable to your PC so we don't require Internet access during the class
* It has a a fair level of compatibility with AutoCAD, so it's not a dead-end product.
* It's upgradable to a really useful pro version for only $50. Other CAD programs require annual fees that are much higher.
* It's free
TUESDAY night: Usage, care and feeding of the laser cutter
* Introduction to our big G-Weike 90 W, 24" x 36" laser cutter
* Startup, shutdown and emergency procedures
* Process checklists
* Allowable materials
* Interfacing the software
* Etching, shading and cutting
As part of the class, you will be etching and cutting your own laser cutter class graduation certificate!
**Please note: 18 year+ event**. Community Outing : Strategic Foresight Event
This month, we’re switching things up. Instead of hosting our usual SD Drinks meetup, we’re inviting the group to **attend another event together**:
**Strategic Foresight for Driving Organizational Transformation**, hosted by Rotman BDI.
Strategic foresight i.e. our ability to anticipate and plan for change already comes up often in our SD conversations. This event explores those ideas in practice, with a case study led by the **Centre for Social Innovation**, adding a layer we deeply care about as designers: meaningful impact and tackling complex, wicked problems.
It’s a topic that feels highly relevant to service design, strategy, and systems thinking, and one we know will resonate with the group.
📅 **Date & time:** February 10, 5:30 pm
📍 **Location:** Rotman School of Management, Room 1065
105 St George Street, Toronto, ON M5S 3E6
🎟 **Tickets:** Please register directly via the host’s Eventbrite page

**Why join as a group?**
This is a great opportunity to:
* explore a topic deeply relevant to design, strategy, and systems thinking
* be inspired by practical foresight frameworks and perspectives
* connect with others, thinking about long-term impact and change
**How we’re doing this:**
Some of us have already registered and plan to attend together. After the event, we’ll grab a drink nearby to continue the conversation — optional, casual, and very SD Drinks 🍻

a11yTO February social, reflecting on accessibility in 2025
We are kicking off **2026** with a relaxed, in person **a11yTO** social focused on connection, reflection, and conversation.
This is a casual evening with no formal presentation and no slides. The goal is simply to bring the community together, reconnect with familiar faces, meet new people, and share experiences from the past year.
As part of the evening, we will offer optional mini lightning prompts for anyone who would like to participate. These are short, three minute reflections focused on looking back at 2025.
You might share one accessibility win from last year that truly made a difference, or one thing that did not work and what it taught you. Listening is just as welcome as sharing, and there is no need to prepare anything in advance.
Whether you are new to accessibility or have been working in the space for years, everyone is welcome.

Azure CBUS February: Build Your Own MCP Server
### Tools in your AI's Toolbox : An introduction to MCP Servers
The generative AI revolution has unlocked unprecedented capabilities, but the next frontier is agency: empowering models to interact with, query, and act upon the world. The current challenge is the “N x M integration problem,” where every AI model requires a custom, brittle integration for each external tool or data source. This approach simply doesn’t scale. How can we give an AI access to our sales leads, code repositories, or IoT devices in a standardized, secure, and reusable way?
This session introduces Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP), the open-source framework designed to solve this challenge and become the universal connector—the USB-C port—for AI. MCP standardizes how AI models discover and use external tools, moving beyond simple function-calling to a robust, client-server architecture. We will dive into how this open protocol is creating a new ecosystem for building powerful, context-aware AI agents.
Join this session for a developer-focused introduction where you will learn how to:
Understand the core concepts of the open-source Model Context Protocol and its architecture.
Utilize pre-built, open-source MCP servers to instantly connect AI to tools like Git, Slack, and databases.
Build a custom MCP server to securely expose your own proprietary data and APIs as tools for any compliant AI.
Move beyond bespoke integrations and contribute to a standardized, collaborative, and open ecosystem.
Stop building one-off connectors and start building intelligent agents. This session will give you the practical knowledge to leverage MCP and create the next generation of AI that doesn’t just talk, but does.
